In 'Rose, Where Did You Get That Red?' the celebrated poet Kenneth Koch conveys the imaginative splendor of great poetry--by Blake, Donne, Stevens, Lorca, and others--and then shows how it may be taught so as to help children write poetry of their own.
When Skye's father died, he left her two things - an inheritance and the possibility that he kidnapped her when she was a toddler. Her world is shattered, but she must know the truth. Armed with nothing more than that information, she goes back to the town where he said it happened. Is she really Skye Maxwell, the woman? Or is she Rose, the kidnapped toddler?
A city brought to it's knees by an angry fire. A Queen lost, her true birthright kept from her. A Prince with the mission to restore her throne. A family torn to pieces by the secret they protect. One heir, one hope, one last chance before all is lost-Forever.
I am not a writer, nor do I want to be. What I am, is on a journey, just like you. So what you read isn't as much about the images that hit the back of your retina, as it is about what you will feel in your heart. Life's often a journey with a road map optional. Mine's been one with a broken GPS along with potholes of disappointment, roadblocks of frustration, wrecks of bumps and bruises, and yet there were detours that made lovingmemories. It's about understanding why you are because of the blood coursing your veins. Some of the stops on the journey seems bizarre or unheard of by most. That's the beginning of the odyssey and it's run amok with gators in thebayou and snoballs in the desert. My fight to claim a dead man, who had been a member of the famous 10th Mountain Division, and be his rightful daughter was more than stop at a C-store, but my love for the man who was never allowed to see me or me allowed to love is as much a part of me as the air I breathe. Why wouldn't it be? I've the 10th Mountain in me. As much as we are different, we are the same. I hope by sharing my journey you'll laugh with me, cry with me, and most importantly, reflect on your life and the infinite gift that it is.

Rose: The extraordinary story of Rose de Freycinet: wife, stowaway and the first woman to record her voyage around the world

The voyage of Rose de Freycinet, the stowaway who defied the French for love.In 1814, in the aftermath of the French Revolution, nineteen-year-old Rose Pinon married handsome naval officer Louis de Freycinet, fifteen years her senior. Three years later, unable to bear parting from her husband, she dressed in men's clothing and slipped secretly aboard his ship the day before it sailed on a voyage of scientific discovery to the South Seas. Living for three years as the sole female among 120 men, Rose de Freycinet defied not only bourgeois society's expectations of a woman in 1817, but also a strict prohibition against women sailing on French naval ships.Whether dancing at governors' balls in distant colonies, or evading pirates and meeting armed Indigenous warriors on remote Australian shores, or surviving shipwreck in the wintry Falkland Islands, Rose used her quick pen to record her daily experiences, becoming the first woman to circumnavigate the world and leave a record of her journey. Suzanne Falkiner tells this story of courage, enduring love, curiosity and a spirit of adventure - and of the pivotal voyages that led to it - while revealing a uniquely female view into the hitherto largely male world of 19th-century life at sea.PRAISE'A beautifully written, heart-lifting saga of adventure and romance' Grantlee Kieza'A leisurely, thoughtful work, richly and broadly detailed, quietly absorbing' Helen Garner

When Pat Brady puts pen to paper, readers can't resist following his original images and tight story lines. This creator pulls more material from the one-child Gumbo family than other cartoonists can with five times the number of characters and settings. That magic comes through in Brady's seventh collection, Rose is Rose Running on Alter Ego. The lively series of daily and Sunday strips revolves around Rose-devoted wife and doting mother-who, try as she might, just can't keep her biker chick fantasies totally in check. Rose never knows, as she manages her blue-collar husband, Jimbo, and their energy-fired son, Pasquale, when Vicki the Biker may show up. But when the long-haired, short-skirted babe surfaces, it's always with a breath of fresh air and a fresh take on ""normal"" family life. Besides appearing on the cover, Rose as Vicki shines throughout the collection, in six new full-page drawings created just for the book. Each shows the seemingly satisfied housewife's alter ego performing some mundane chore demanded by Rose's less adventurous life, while Brady's usual mix of family fun, frolic, and fancy gives Gumbo fans plenty of delight.
