Sean Thomas - Yearbook Vol II 2023
While based in New York, London and Paris, American photographer Sean Thomas constantly travels and photographs around the world. His images for fashion magazines are ephemeral by nature. He thus decided to collect them in a yearbook, where each year he gathers unpublished images, various shootings, and personal works — the personal diary of a fashion photographer who likes to tell stories. Sean Thomas was born in 1970 in Omaha, the largest city in Nebraska. He studied art initially before moving to New York in 2000 where he began working as creative director for the record label Rykodisc before joining Warner Music. He thus had the opportunity to work with pop icons like David Bowie and Elvis Costello, groups including the Talking Head and more. After about ten years in the music industry, Thomas turned to photography. His first series for the magazine i-D in 2008 captured the early menswear creations of the young fashion designer Thom Browne. The creative director Nathaniel Kilcer, one of Thomas’s close friends, introduced him to Bruce Weber. In 2013, Here and Beyond: A Nebraska Story, a 42-page photographic series by Thomas in three parts, was featured in All-American, the journal published by Weber. Thomas likes to tell stories, whether real or imagined, and enjoys combining fashion and reporting in his commissions for American and British Vogue, Holiday, Self Service, L’Étiquette, Modern Weekly and Vanity Fair, among other publications. Between his frequent trips, all giving rise to extensive portfolios of images from Central and South America to Cuba, Ethiopia and India, he works for leading fashion labels such as Ralph Lauren, Massimo Dutti, Tommy Hilfiger, Chloé, Stella McCartney, Michael Kors and Victoria’s Secret.

In a spectacular move, the Albertina presents Sean Scully from a hitherto unfamiliar side with a series of large figurative paintings of his son Oisín playing on the beach of Eleuthera, an island in the Bahamas. Scully's inimitable pictures used to rely solely on paint - applied with a strong, but above all abstract gesture - the new series however appears like a surprising point of reversal. Yet, the new paintings are a return to his earliest beginnings, as, in the 1950s, Scully embarked along the Fauves and German Expressionism from realism into the realm of pure colour. Even today, abstraction, as he sees it, is still infused with memories of figurative sources. This richly illustrated catalogue brings together all Oisín-Paintings, enriched by graphic works from Albertina's collection, extensive material from Scully's private archive, as well as in-depth essays by Werner Spies and Elisabeth Dutz elaborating on this newly obtained painterly freedom.
Sean Scully: Catalogue Raisonne. Volume II
This catalog, the second volume in a proposed series of five, chronicles Sean Scully's (born 1945) paintings of the 1980s. Beginning with major breakthrough works early in the decade, it profiles the development of Scully's mature style as well as his growing success in America and internationally. Scully, a native of Ireland, was educated in England and moved to the United States in 1975. By the early 1980s, he was established in New York, where he developed a powerful style of richly painted stripes and shapes with a masterly control of color and strongly built canvases. In a period of low regard for abstract painting, Scully reinvigorated the form to include rich evocations of places, literature and emotion.

A decade of bold artistic evolution This volume, fourth in a planned series of six, presents Sean Scully's paintings in the first decade of the twenty- first century. Working in studios in New York, Barcelona and Bavaria, he produced over 400 paintings in this period, continuing his major series of Wall of Light paintings, begun in 1997, and adding new, acclaimed series such as Cut Grounds and Robes. Major touring exhibitions of his work were presented by the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Dusseldorf, in 2001 and the Miro Foundation, Barcelona, in 2007. Early in the decade, Scully was made an Honorary Fellow of the London Institute of Arts and Letters, and a member of Aosdána in Ireland. In 2003, he received honorary doctorates of fine art from the Massachusetts College of Art, Boston, and the National University of Ireland, Dublin.

What makes a person an artist? How do works of art and their very own, extraordinary style come into being? And how does the prominent painter view his own work? The world-famous painter Sean Scully met with the philosopher David Carrier for several in-depth interview sessions. Their conversations explore these and many more questions about Scully’s life, work, and ideas. The result is a rich manuscript that very closely approaches the status of autobiography. Scully provides personal insights into his life and the important sources of inspiration for his career. He discusses his own view of his entire oeuvre, of art history and his position within it. Thus, this text becomes a literal eye-opener for Scully’s art, which can be (re)discovered through his words.
