Nazi Occultism

Nazi Occultism

Stéphane François

Nazi Occultism provides a serious scholarly study of a topic that is often marred by sensationalism and misinformation. The Morning of the Magicians by Pauwels and Bergier (1960) gave rise to the idea that a secret society with wide powers, the "Thule society", was the hidden and ignored centre of Nazism. The influence of this very real small group is, however, only a fantasy, a myth. The author, a historian specializing in neo-Nazism, looks back on this speculative construction, its origins, its ideological tinkering and the practices which have succeeded in forming a sort of radical and sulphurous counterculture which has created a fascination with esotericism and Nazism and the SS. To better understand it, he also paints a portrait of some of the authors who contributed to this extremist subculture, such as the Italian esotericist Julius Evola, the Argentine anthropologist Jacques-Marie de Mahieu, Chilean neo-Nazi Miguel Serrano, and the writer Jean-Paul Bourre. This book will appeal to scholars, researchers and activists as well as general readers with an interest in the history of Nazism and the occult.
Unworldliness in Twentieth Century German Thought

Unworldliness in Twentieth Century German Thought

What happens when the world around us feels fragmented? How can a person continue to respond positively to their environment when it seems to have lost its internal coherence? These questions lie at the heart of this innovative interpretation of some of the most influential German philosophers of the twentieth century. The key figures in this study are the young Georg Lukács (1885–1971), Ernst Jünger (1895–1998), Ernst Bloch (1885–1977), Theodor Adorno (1903–1969), Max Kommerell (1902–1944), and Siegfried Kracauer (1889–1966).By establishing an intellectual dialogue among these otherwise diverse thinkers, this study identifies a common interest: the question whether an unworldly, fragmented universe can nonetheless elicit a creative response from individuals. Together, these authors offer an alternative to what is considered the dominant trend in twentieth-century German philosophy: the phenomenological emphasis on humans' lived interactions with a shared and unified lifeworld. Special attention is given to six distinct interpretations of Miguel de Cervantes's novel Don Quixote and the unworldly actions of its main character.Unworldliness in Twentieth Century German Thought will appeal to researchers and advanced students interested in twentieth-century continental philosophy, German intellectual history, critical theory, and literature and philosophy.
Why Sámi Sing

Why Sámi Sing

Why Sámi Sing is an anthropological inquiry into a singing practice found among the Indigenous Sámi people, living in the northernmost part of Europe. It inquires how the performance of melodies, with or without lyrics, may be a way of altering perception, relating to human and non-human presences, or engaging with the past. According to its practitioners, the Sámi "yoik" is more than a musical repertoire made up by humans: it is a vocal power received from the environment, one that reveals its possibilities with parsimony through practice and experience. Following the propensity of Sámi singers to take melodies seriously and experiment with them, this book establishes a conversation between Indigenous and Western epistemologies and introduces the "yoik" as a way of knowing in its own right, with both convergences and divergences vis-à-vis academic ways of knowing. It will be of particular interest to scholars of anthropology, ethnomusicology, and Indigenous studies.*Honourable Mention - International Council for Traditions of Music and Dance Book Prize 2024*

Belonging, Citizenship and Muslim Identity

Belonging, Citizenship and Muslim Identity

Stéphane Hlaimi

This book explores belonging among Muslims in Britain and France, asking whether British and French Muslims are citizens first or Muslims first. Based on in-depth interviews with Muslims in both jurisdictions, it considers three options open to Muslims – assimilation, integration, or conflict – and considers the differences in approach that tend to prevail among Muslims in Britain and France, with British Muslims tending to favour a cohabitationist strategy, while many French Muslims adopt a more conflictual approach. With attention to issues of Islamophobia, the author examines the crises multiculturalism and secularism are facing, and argues for a more inclusive rhetoric on questions of Islam and citizenship, to counter the essentialist, ‘othering’ approach that characterises media coverage and public discourse.A call for a new paradigm of articulation between Muslim identity and Western citizenship, Belonging, Citizenship and Muslim Identity will be of interest to scholars of sociology, politics, geography and anthropology with interests in inclusion and diasporic communities.

Fundamentals of Learning: A Behavioral Approach discusses the basic mechanisms of learning. It highlights how most behaviors are learned through minimal amounts of cognitive processing and acquired through associations between stimuli, such as observed in classical and operant conditioning (associative learning) and repeated experiences with a single stimulus (non-associative learning).Together, in combination with innate or instinctual behaviors, these forms of learning account for the acquisition of an impressively wide range of behaviors and played a crucial in the evolution of species as it permitted them to adapt to changing environments. The book begins by tracing the history of learning theory, acquainting students with the philosophers and early researchers who contributed to learning theory. It then goes on to cover theoretical explanations of the basic learning mechanisms, including theories of classical and operant conditioning. The modular approach of the book enables students to link the concepts they learn about in the text to their own behavior. The book concludes with a discussion of the role of cognition in learning covering behaviors that are considered to be less automatized and mediated by cognitive processes, such as the formation of spatial maps and the processes involved in decision-making and motivated behaviors. The book is written with the student in mind throughout, featuring real-life case studies, key terms and learning objectives. It is also accompanied by an eBook+ featuring in-chapter videos, alongside online resources such as lecture slides, class assignments, and multiple choice questions. It will be a must-read for all students of learning and behavior, or animal learning.

XVA Analysis: Probabilistic, Risk Measure, and Machine Learning Issues offers readers an up-to-date and comprehensive exploration of the X-Value Adjustment (XVA) universe and of the embedded risk measure issues inherent within it. The book tackles this subject through the triple lens of ?nance (wealth transfers), stochastic analysis (enlargement of ?ltration and BSDEs), and numerical computations. The traditional Credit Valuation Adjustment (CVA) desk compensates the trading desks for the cash flows that they lose in case of defaults of their counterparties. The Treasury of the bank funds the activity of the trading desks and of the CVA desk at the risk-free rate. The CVA desk and the Treasury charge their costs to the clients of the bank at a valuation level ensuring corresponding PnL processes that are martingales relative to a fininsurance probability measure calibrated to the market and consistent with the physical probability measure given the market. The management of the bank charges to the clients of the bank an additional risk premium, turning the overall dividend process of the bank shareholders into a submartingale in line with a target hurdle rate on their capital at risk within the bank. This is the essence of the cost-of-capital XVA approach, which can also be used in reverse engineering mode, for determining the price range of a new deal that improves the implied hurdle rate of the bank shareholders. The advent of XVAs reflects a shift of paradigm regarding the pricing and risk management of financial derivatives, from hedging to balance sheet optimization. It is this approach which this book shall explore.Features· Numerous illustrative figures and examples· Unprecedented coverage of neural network regression methodologies· Suitable as supplementary reading for graduate students and as a practical reference for professional quantitative analysts and risk managers.
The Lullaby’s Outline

The Lullaby’s Outline

Stéphane Aubinet

This book offers an anthropological exploration of the lullaby, a type of music found in nearly all human societies. The chapters review diverse ethnographic cases, from bedtime routines in Western societies to historical and Indigenous practices. Moving beyond common definitions of the lullaby, the author integrates ‘diverging’ instances of lulling, including mythological narratives, herding songs used to soothe cattle, sleep-inducing music composed for monarchs, electronic musical dolls, and protective spells. The work considers how these varied examples can add layers and depth to our understanding of what it means to lull a child. The investigation displays an innovative approach to musical comparison by investigating the ‘partial connections’ that different traditions display with one another. Positioned at the meeting point of comparative musicology and ethnomusicology, the study combines comparative gestures with original fieldwork, and acknowledges both the importance of cross-cultural similarities and ethnographic entanglements that complicate generalisations. Starting from four European traditions (the Irish suantraí, the Georgian iavnana, the Ancient Roman nenia, and the Sámi dovdna), the study delves into themes of power, spirituality, death, magic, technologies, and Indigenous ontologies, which echo across diverse cultural contexts without being quite universal. It will be of interest to scholars of anthropology, music, folklore, and beyond.

The idea behind this book is to share the musings I share on Facebook and on my blog and to order them into a unified whole. To take the readers through a journey of discovery of our society, culture, history and to bring them to a deeper understanding of the world around them and inside them. The authors I quote and muse about all have certain knowledge and wisdom from their respective crafts, that I admire, and I would like to share this perennial wisdom with the world as I believe it is lacking wisdom to further proceed in its evolution in this paradigm.

Disaster Falls

Disaster Falls

Stephane Gerson

Crown Publishing Group, Division of Random House Inc

sidottu
A haunting chronicle of what endures when the world we know is swept away On a day like any other, on a rafting trip down Utah s Green River, Stephane Gerson s eight-year-old son, Owen, drowned in a spot known as Disaster Falls. That night, as darkness fell, Stephane huddled in a tent with his wife, Alison, and their older son, Julian, trying to understand what seemed inconceivable. It s just the three of us now, Alison said over the sounds of a light rain and, nearby, the rushing river. We cannot do it alone. We have to stick together. Disaster Falls chronicles the aftermath of that day and their shared determination to stay true to Alison s resolution. At the heart of the book is an unflinching portrait of a marriage tested. Husband and wife grieve in radically different ways that threaten to isolate each of them in their post-Owen worlds. ( He feels so far, Stephane says when Alison shows him a selfie Owen had taken. He feels so close, she says.) With beautiful specificity, Stephane shows how they resist that isolation and reconfigure their marriage from within. As Stephane navigates his grief, the memoir expands to explore how society reacts to the death of a child. He depicts the good death of his father, which reveals an altogther different perspective on mortality. He excavates the history of the Green River rife with hazards not mentioned in the rafting company s brochures. He explores how stories can both memorialize and obscure a person s life and how they can rescue us. Disaster Falls is a powerful account of a life cleaved in two raw, truthful, and unexpectedly consoling."
