Serious Games in Personalized Learning investigates game-based teaching and learning at a time when learning and training systems are increasingly integrating serious games, machine-learning artificial intelligence models, and adaptive technologies. Game-based education provides rare data for measuring, assessing, and evaluating not just a game’s effectiveness but the acquisition of information and knowledge that a student may gain through playing a learning game. This book synthesizes contemporary research, frameworks, and models centered on the design and delivery of serious games that truly personalize the learning experience. Scholars of educational technology, instructional design, human performance, and more will find a comprehensive guide to the history, practical implications, and data-collection potential inherent to these fast-evolving tools.

The authors provide inspiration, practical tools, and resources through the antibias, antiracist, culturally responsive practices framework (ABAR CRP). This teacher-friendly text shows how to engage in self-inquiry and evaluate current classroom practices while embedding new ones that advance the learning and well-being of children, especially those from minoritized and poor communities. Readers will find tools and assessments to support the implementation of culturally grounded practices that will improve outcomes for diverse children in early childhood settings and systems. This book connects history to current events, supports self-inquiry, encourages a shift in mindset and, most importantly, offers guidance for creating affirming and joyful spaces for young children to learn.Book Features:“Design an Activity for Children” section asks teachers to create a classroom activity incorporating the information they have learned.“Discussions About Real-World Dilemmas” presents a problem and asks readers to discuss how they would resolve it.“Exercises That Promote Critical Reflection” activities that encourages teachers to think about how they are a product of the beliefs, values, and social-political history of their cultural group.“What Would You Do” reflective questions that help teachers to problem-solve how they might react during difficult situations.

Thirteen authors, including Narrelle M. Harris, Jody Lynn Nye, and Sarah Stegall, come together in the second edition of Baker Street Irregulars to pen an original collection of short stories on the iconic and timeless character, Sherlock Holmes. In this new edition of Baker Street Irregulars, a cast of authors riff on the iconic figure of Sherlock Holmes in over a dozen captivating new ways. In Keith DeCandido’s “Six Red Dragons,” Sherlock is a young girl in modern New York City. In Sarah Stegall’s “Papyrus,” Sherlock is a female librarian in ancient Egypt. In Daniel M. Kimmel’s mesmerizing “A Scandal in Chelm,” Sherlock is a rabbi. Derek Beebe sends Sherlock to the moon, while Mike Strauss, in “The Adventure of the Double Sized Final Issue,” casts him as a comic book character. The backdrops run the gamut from a grade school classroom to Jupiter, from rural, post-Civil War to an alien spaceship. While preserving the timeless charm and intrigue of Sherlock Holmes, these authors pen stories of the world’s greatest detective as you’ve never seen him before.

The U.S. Coast Guard's motto is Semper Paratus--always ready. But for what? This report describes an approach to developing scenarios to aid in decisionmaking under deep uncertainty through the Evergreen strategic foresight initiative. The scenarios presented here focus on readiness, but the approach can be adapted for other contexts.

This report summarizes the findings of research on U.S. and other armed forces' capabilities in the Arctic, the extent to which non-U.S. entities are operating where U.S. forces cannot, and how those operations might affect U.S. national interests. The authors found that the United States is lacking in capacity and, to a lesser extent, capability and that this creates risk for U.S. security.

West Africa boasts considerable zoogenetic diversity, exemplified by the trypanotolerant taurines(Bos taurus). However, the introduction of Zebus(Bos indicus) has altered the genetic heritage of local breeds, particularly bulls. This situation is a cause for concern, as few studies have assessed the levels of taurine introgression in the region. The main aim of this study is to highlight the morphological and genetic indices of introgression within Burkina Faso cattle breeds, and to compare them with those of other West African countries. The study combines morphometric and molecular analyses of cattle from Burkina Faso, Benin, Niger and Mali, to assess gene flow, genetic diversity and introgression levels using microsatellite markers. In 2014, a marked structuring of taurine populations in Burkina Faso was observed, followed in 2018 by homogenization due to strong introgression of zebu genes. Molecular analyses indicate zebu introgression, varying between 20% and 50%, with notable genetic diversity, a phenomenon also present in Benin, Niger and Mali.
