The God Concept is a serious questioning of the existence of any deity other than a concept of the mind, that examines the basis of evidence in the Old Testament, early Jewish history, the gods of Mesopotamia, the emergence of Yahwism, the making of theocracy and evolution of awareness of the divine. Against this deistic tradition, Stuart A. West considers the tradition of Western rational science, philosophy and biology, in particular Newton, Hume, Kant, and Darwin. Avebury is a village in Wiltshire at the heart of the Marlborough Downs. In Avebury the prehistoric stone circle, together with the manor house, receive most of the attention. But what about the history of the ordinary people of the parish? Their story is just as interesting, but is rarely mentioned and little studied. This book sets out to tell their stories: the story of the local gentry and yeomen, the schoolmasters, the carpenters, the masons, the agricultural labourers, the poor. It paints a lively picture of Avebury in the early modern period - its government, its landowners and tenants, its agriculture, its occupations, its living conditions, its religion. It demonstrates that there is much more to Avebury than just its archaeology.

Just days after the handover, however, the Congo's new army mutinied, Belgian forces intervened, and Lumumba turned to the United Nations for help in saving his newborn nation from what the press was already calling "the Congo crisis." Dag Hammarskj ld, the tidy Swede serving as UN secretary-general, quickly arranged the organization's biggest peacekeeping mission in history. But chaos was still spreading. Frustrated with the fecklessness of the UN and spurned by the United States, Lumumba then approached the Soviets for help--an appeal that set off alarm bells at the CIA.
