Dynastic marriages mattered in early modern Europe: the creation of alliances and the outbreak of wars were tied to continental dynastic politics. Dynastic marriages mattered in early modern Europe. The creation of alliances and the outbreak of wars were tied to continental dynastic politics. This book combines cultural definitions of politics with a wider exploration of institutional, military, diplomatic and economic concerns with a view to providing a more comprehensive understanding of dynastic marriage negotiations. It covers a period from the signing of the Treaty of London in 1604 until afterthe Anglo-French and Anglo-Spanish peace treaties (1629-30). Stuart Marriage Diplomacy explores how the search for a bride for Princes Henry and Charles started a long process of protracted consultations between the key players of Europe: Spain, Italy, France, Rome, Brussels and the United Provinces. It shows the interconnections between these courts, thus advancing a 'continental turn' in the analysis of Stuart politics in the early seventeenth century, and considers how reason of state was often considered as more crucial than religion or economic concerns in the outcome of the Stuart-Habsburg and Stuart-Bourbon marriage negotiations. It also reveals the extent to which the interactions between Europe and non-European actors in both the Atlantic and the East contributed to a redefinition of European identity. It will engage not only scholars and students of early modern Europe but, more generally, those interested in the history of European courts and royalty. "Stuart Devlin was probably the most original and creative goldsmith and silversmith of his time, and one of the greats of all time. His originality of design marked him out as a master craftsman and his prolific output was a tribute to the width of his imagination." - Foreword by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh. This book gives an idea of Stuart Devlin's extraordinary creativity, his skill, and the beauty of his work. It comprises over 500 pages with hundreds of images of Devlin's gold, silver and coins as well as his jewellery, sculpture and furniture. Many collectors will recognise pieces that they originally commissioned or have bought. Also shown are numerous sketches and working drawings. The short sections of text include concise captions and reviews from primary sources. Although it has been impossible to encompass everything ever designed or produced by Devlin, the book highlights how remarkable it is that this wealth of ideas was conceived by just one man. Stuart Devlin was a pioneer goldsmith who rejected the anonymity of corporate design during the 1960s. He adapted old techniques and devised many new ones. His commissions included those for the Royal Households, cathedrals, the armed forces, sporting bodies and universities, as well as abundant private commissions. He was also a coin and medal designer. Australian born, recognition came to Devlin after designing the Australian decimal coinage in 1963. He went on to design coins for more than 30 countries.

A contemporary look at one of the founding figures in the field of cultural studies. This volume from Goldsmiths Press examines the career of the cultural studies pioneer Stuart Hall, investigating his influence and revealing lesser-known facets of his work. These essays evaluate the legacies of his particular brand of cultural studies and demonstrate how other scholars and activists have utilized his thinking in their own research. Throughout, Hall's colleagues and collaborators assess his theoretical and methodological standpoints, his commitment to the development of a flexible form of revisionist Marxism, and the contributions of his specific mode of analysis to public debates on Thatcherism, neoliberalism, and multiculturalism. In her contribution, Angela Davis argues that the model of politics, ideology, and race initially developed by Hall and his colleagues in England continues to resonate when applied to America's racialized policing. Other essays focus on Hall's contributions to contemporary political debate and questions of race, ethnicity, identity, migrancy, and diaspora, and discuss Hall's continuing involvement in issues of representation and aesthetics in the visual arts, particularly photography and film. With contributions from Britain, Europe, East Asia, and North and Latin America, the book provides a comprehensive look at how, under Hall's intellectual leadership, British cultural studies transformed itself from a form of "local" knowledge to the international field of study we know today.ContributorsJohn Akomfrah, Avtar Brah, Charlotte Brunsdon, Iain Chambers, Kuan-Hsing Chen, John Clarke, James Curran, Angela Davis, David Edgar, Lawrence Grossberg, Catherine Hall, Dick Hebdige, Tony Jefferson, Robert Lumley, Mahasiddhi (Roy Peters), Doreen Massey, Angela McRobbie, Caspar Melville, Frank Mort, Michael Rustin, Bill Schwarz, Mark Sealy, Liv Sovik, Lola Young
The Stuart James Reader: Three Full Novels
Now, for the first time ever, three long-lost, relentlessly hard-boiled classics by noir master Stuart James are collected in one volume: Frisco Flat, Bucks County Report, and Judge Not My Sins."One way or another, all of his books are as strikingly memorable. Using words with manipulative skill, he paints portraits that are poignantly three-dimensional and compassionate. You're about to experience the essential Stuart James." David Spencer, from his extensive Afterword in this volume.FRISCO FLATWhen his father is beaten-to-death, Korean War vet and ex-prize fighter Frankie Cargo returns to his home in the small, northern California waterfront town of Frisco Flat. Cargo has inherited his father's fishing boat business and trouble from Sam Barlow, the vicious local cannery owner who rules the town with fear...and with the iron fist of the psychopathic and corrupt Sheriff. If that wasn't bad enough, Barlow gets involved with the Sheriff's lover, the voluptuous Tosca Sorrento, who wants more than any man can give. But Barlow won't be pushed...and never backs down from a fight."Pretty darned good. Frisco Flat moves along well. The book is a little better written, a little more literary in places, than many of the hard-boiled novels from that era," James Reasoner, Rough EdgesBUCKS COUNTY REPORTThe explosive, bestselling novel that lays bare the erotic frustrations of suburban couples in 1960s America with savage frankness and searing drama. In the wake of the Masters & Johnson studies, exposing the surprising sex lives of Americans, came this fictional bestseller that explores what happens when a famous "sexologist" visits a small town to interview the idle wives of the rich and famous... sparking passions that have been ignored or suppressed, dramatically changing the lives of the residents. JUDGE NOT MY SINSThe provocative story of a fierce, destructive affair... of a man who longs to love without restraint, to give up his wife and children to plunge himself into a consuming passion that threatens his world... and of a woman who is driven by desire, and tormented by the horrible knowledge that her voracious hungers will destroy the man she loves.
Stuart Hall, Conjunctural Analysis and Cultural Criminology

Stuart Hall, Conjunctural Analysis and Cultural Criminology

This book discusses Stuart Hall's unique contribution to criminology. It suggests that this is captured best in Hall’s commitment to understanding a given historical moment, or conjuncture, in its full complexity, and his continuous deployment of an appropriate methodology, conjunctural analysis, to do so. This provides a running thread linking Hall’s early work on youth subcultures, the media, the state and hegemony to his later work on racial identities, racism and the politics of difference. This is contrasted with more theoretically-driven work in cultural criminology. Its failure to adopt a conjunctural approach constitutes, for the author, something of a missed moment. To demonstrate the continuing relevance of this form of analysis, the book provides a conjunctural analysis of Brexit, including its psychosocial dimension and concludes with a brief analysis of Trump’s failure to get re-elected. The book is intended for students of criminology and cultural studies.
