Breakfast at Tiffany's & Other Voices, Other Rooms
From the Modern Library's new set of beautifully repackaged hardcover classics by Truman Capote--also available are In Cold Blood, Portraits and Observations, and The Complete Stories Together in one volume, here are a pair of literary touchstones from Truman Capote's extraordinary early career: the transcendently popular novella Breakfast at Tiffany's and Other Voices, Other Rooms, the debut novel he published as a twenty-three-year-old prodigy. Of all his characters, Capote once said, Holly Golightly was his favorite. The hillbilly-turned-Manhattanite at the center of Breakfast at Tiffany's shares not only the author's philosophy of freedom but also his fears and anxieties. For Holly, the cure is to jump into a taxi and head for Tiffany's; nothing bad could happen, she believes, amid "that lovely smell of silver and alligator wallets." Other Voices, Other Rooms begins as thirteen-year-old Joel Knox, after losing his mother, is sent from New Orleans to rural Alabama to live with his estranged father--who is nowhere to be found. Instead, Joel meets his eccentric family and finds a kindred spirit in a defiant little girl. Despite its themes of waylaid hopes and lost innocence, this semiautobiographical coming-of-age novel revels in small pleasures and the colorful language of its time and place.

Louis C. Tiffany s intricate and brilliantly coloured masterpieces have captivated collectors for decades, and continue to inspire crafters who re-create them in home workshops today. This collection showcases eighty of the firm s most iconic lamps, including rare and one-of-a-kind creations. These examples have all been newly photographed in sumptuous detail to reveal features in the glass and metalwork that have never been seen before in print. Intricate patterns dazzle with kaleidoscopic fantasies: wisteria that twists and curls with grace, peonies that explode with colour, and dragonflies that dance with the light. Uniting a reverence for nature and a fascination with the artistic potential of glass, Louis C. Tiffany and his designers created a revolutionary design aesthetic that brought the beauty of the natural world into the home. This book explores Tiffany Studios innovative adaptation of electric light: sheathing the incandescent light bulb in a shimmering veil of leaded glass. Beautifully designed and produced in an intimate format, The Lamps of Tiffany Studios presents a jewel-box package that makes the perfect gift for any art lover.

A stunning stained glass window becomes a lens through which to view the career of Louis Comfort Tiffany and intersecting arcs of art and design in America. The story of the Parakeets stained glass window – from national and international recognition to years of obscurity, followed by a return to the limelight – parallels the public reception of the art of its maker, Louis Comfort Tiffany, who had one of the most recognized names in American art at the turn of the twentieth century. It is a story of artistic ambition and experimentation, of nationalist pride and promotion, and of the capricious nature of public opinion and the art market. A careful study of the fabrication, imagery, and life of the window offers an intimate look into the legacy of Tiffany, as well as the nineteenth-century revival of the lesser-known medium of stained glass, which some argue was the United States’ first major contribution to the international art world.

Jerome Mark Antil

In the opening of the titular love story, Jerry, rather appropriately, is enamored. It's 1966, and the 20-something is a groomsman for a friend's Long Island wedding. He catches a glimpse of one of the bridesmaids--Pamela, as it turns out--and is immediately smitten. The nearly 7-foot-tall groomsman is coupled with Pamela, the tallest of the women, for the ceremony, and they even get caught in a photo together with a passing Robert F. Kennedy. But after the wedding, Pamela heads back to Paris, where she works as a model. Ten years pass, and Jerry has the opportunity to spend an evening with Pamela, an unforgettable encounter before the two reunite decades later. Antil's tale grows more endearing as the couple's romance becomes more familiar. Jerry, for example, initially idolizes Pamela, whose modeling days were spent mingling with celebrities, but as he gets to know her (favorite movies and books), it's an unquestionably strong connection between real people. The remaining trio of tales in the collection delves further back into Antil's history, each revolving around Christmas with his family. The hilarious "Richard Leaves the Choir Breathless" spotlights 6-year-old Jerry's older brother, Dick, who's in trouble so often at Roman Catholic school he's mastered the art of sleeping while standing in the corner. His performance for the school's Christmas pageant is, not surprisingly, a showstopper. "Postwar Shortages and Shortfalls" is likewise amusing when a holiday gift for the children's mother leads to a mishap at a bank that may traumatize the family with embarrassment. The book ends with "A Cazenovia Christmas Past," the gloomiest of the bunch. In it, preteen Jerry and his siblings are shocked when their father is diagnosed with tuberculosis and leaves the family to stay at a sanatorium. Not sure when his dad will return, if at all, Jerry may miss out on the joy of the childhood he's experiencing, including a summer job and young love with the new girl at school, Judy.Winsome stories of love and unbreakable bonds, notwithstanding tragedy or years of separation.
