African Americans and the First Amendment

African Americans and the First Amendment

Timothy C. Shiell

State University of New York Press
2019
sidottu
The first detailed examination of African Americans and First Amendment rights, from the colonial era to the present. 2020 CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title African Americans and the First Amendment is the first book to explore in detail the relationship between African Americans and our "first freedoms," especially freedom of speech. Timothy C. Shiell utilizes an interdisciplinary approach to demonstrate that a strong commitment to civil liberty and to racial equality are mutually supportive, as they share an opposition to orthodoxy and a commitment to greater inclusion and participation. This crucial connection is evidenced throughout US history, from the days of colonial and antebellum slavery to Jim Crow: in the landmark US Supreme Court decision in 1937 freeing the black communist Angelo Herndon; in the struggles and victories of the civil rights movement, from the late 1930s to the late '60s; and in the historical and modern debates over hate speech restrictions. Liberty and equality can conflict in individual cases, Shiell argues, but there is no fundamental conflict between them. Robust First Amendment values protect and encourage demands for racial equality while weak First Amendment values, in contrast, lead to censorship and a chilling of demands for racial equality.
Structures and Categories for the Representation of Meaning

Structures and Categories for the Representation of Meaning

Potts Timothy C.

Cambridge University Press
2007
pokkari
This 1994 book develops a way of representing the meanings of linguistic expressions which is independent of any particular language, allowing the expressions to be manipulated in accordance with rules related to their meanings which could be implemented on a computer. It begins with a survey of the contributions of linguistics, logic and computer science to the problem of representation, linking each with a particular type of formal grammar. A system of graphs is then presented, organized by scope relations in which linguistic constituents are sub-graphs whose configuration is determined by their categories. In developing this system, the author extends the notion of scope and argues that anaphoric and relative pronouns are structural signs not linguistic constituents. Certain count nouns are made the basis of this system and an account of proper names relating the count nouns, is given.

God's Unbreakable Blood Covenant of Redemption

God's Unbreakable Blood Covenant of Redemption

From the moment of original sin, God unveiled a plan of redemption. Deep inside that plan was a covenant, and inside the covenant's DNA was God's love and awe-inspiring grace. This divine love for mankind is beautifully revealed in John 3:16. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." And His amazing grace becomes vividly apparent in Romans 5:8, "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." After Adam fell into sin, God resolved to restore their broken fellowship by establishing an unbreakable, everlasting blood covenant. In this Covenant of Redemption, God the Father represented all righteousness, while the pre-incarnate Son of God (Jesus) represented all sin. Astonishingly, the Holy Spirit impregnated Mary, and at Jesus' death on the cross, God the Father accepted Jesus' shed blood for the forgiveness of all repentant sin. This remarkable covenant revealed the awesome work of the Trinity and is the cornerstone of all salvation. In the Old Testament story of Jonah, God sent a huge sea creature to rescue him from the raging sea. And in the New Testament, God sent his Son to rescue all of mankind from sin. When speaking of his own death and resurrection, Jesus made reference to Jonah's miraculous rescue. Matthew 12:40 reads, "For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth." Jesus' death and resurrection was God's plan of redemption, rescuing mankind from downing in his own sea of sin. Throughout the Bible, covenant making and covenant keeping are of prodigious importance. They were created for one reason; to bring two entities into an unbreakable single union. Because the Bible was written by men living in the Middle East, a Middle Eastern perspective has been included. Co-author Mike Ahmed was born Mohammad Ahmed and raised in a Muslim household in Egypt. His covenant insights and cultural views are readily evident in this narrative. Some of his perspectives may seem foreign and possibly disturbing to the reader. Nevertheless, in order to grasp the totality of covenant making and covenant keeping, his viewpoints are essential. For an in-depth look into Mike Ahmed's spiritual life, an abridged autobiography titled "God in My Life" has been included.

Written by three expert birders, this book is both a finding guide and an annotated checklist of the birds found in Indiana. In Part I, The Haunts, the Kellers present 66 of their favorite Hoosier birding spots—parks, reservoirs, and wildlife refuges, as well as more unexpected and unusual sites. Part II, the Checklist, provides the latest records for northern, central, and southern Indiana for 397 species, from permanent residents to the rarest of strays. The new edition has also been rearranged according to the most recent AOU classification scheme, which will be especially convenient for birders now using the national Geographic filed guide. Birds in Part II are cross-indexed to the haunts in Part I. First published in 1979, the book was acclaimed as "extremely functional," "gracefully written", "excellent for touring birders," and "an uncommonly thorough regional guide."
The Gagging of God

The Gagging of God

D. A. Carson; Timothy C. Tennent

The Gold Medallion Award-winning book that presents a persuasive case for Christ as the only way to God in light of contemporary religious pluralism. A great majority of social commentators attempting to define modern Western culture land on a common characteristic: pluralism. This isn't unique to secular culture. Many modern approaches to Christian hermeneutics, or biblical interpretation, have given credence to contemporary pluralism. What began as a refreshing restraint and humility in modern theology has fallen more and more into irresoluteness. It's no secret that the contemporary challenges to Christianity are complex and serious. Yet, far from simple fear-mongering, or cultural warmongering, The Gagging of God takes a hard look at the background and intricacy—of pluralism, postmodernity, and hermeneutics—and equips thoughtful Christians to have intelligent, culturally sensitive, and passionate fidelity to the gospel of Jesus Christ. In his contemplative, even-handed approach, Carson provides a structure of Christian thought capable of facing the philosophies of today and piercing their surface. It invites Christians to grapple responsibly with urgent questions of biblically-grounded theology, spirituality, and the defining lines of Christianity, along with its range of challenges from without and within. The Gagging of God offers an in-depth look at the big picture, shows how the many ramifications of pluralism are all parts of a whole, and provides a systematic Christian response.
