Born in 1911 and living well into the 1990s, Velma is a twentieth-century woman. She lived a charmed childhood, but love and marriage brought unexpected challenges: her husband, her children, her dreams. Slowly, as she struggled to find and assert her true self, Velma's life grew fuller and happier. The Velma Stories illuminate key points in Velma's life from 1923 to 1996. Some of the fourteen stories are told in her own voice. Others feature the voices of family and friends. All are very loosely based, on the life of the author's stepmother-together the stories follow the arc of a real woman's life. Velma's struggle, though very much her own, also suggests the lives of many women of her generation: middle class, mid-century, middle-aged, mid-continental, but still individual, still themselves. Altogether, The Velma Stories offer a sympathetic portrayal of women who have too often been caricatured. Velma deserves better.

Hidden Truth: Raja Ravi Varma: The Inside Story
The sharp eye of Neelakantan Bhattathiripad noted the young Ravi Varma tracing lines on the sand. His son was a strange child in his opinion but he refrained from voicing it. "What would this son of his become, the scion of this strange race," he wondered? "Always, always drawing and sketching things - was there a future in this?" His wife, Umamba Bayi indulged him too much. All this fanciful sketching, it was a dreamer's life, thought Neelakantan. From his father, Ravi Varma learned to discipline his thoughts, from his mother the pictorial rhythms of poetry and music, and from his uncle, Raja Raja Varma, the way to express it all in concrete visual form, as he was doing on the sand. *** As an artist who not only keeps alive Raja Ravi Varma's legacy, but is also his direct descendant, Rukmini Varma is a remarkable source of stories, anecdotes, and the most fascinating details about this legendary Indian painter, viewing him not only as her ancestor but also as a creative force who opened a whole new chapter in India's artistic tradition. Rukmini Varma offers to unravel the story of Ravi Varma and all that made him the person he was, from a perspective that is both new but also intimate and deeply personal - a combination that is especially inviting. - Manu S. Midnight Hotel & Other Plays: Three Plays by Shreekumar Varma
THIS IS OUR SECOND collection of plays by Shreekumar Varma. The three plays here present different core ideas, but are connected by murder and mystery. Midnight Hotel has had more than ten outings already and will have three more in 2019. With murder and intrigue, a ghost running amok and hilarious conflicts, the core idea remains the beauty and brittleness of relationships. Cast Party goes to the Army to find its story. Following the staging of an explosive play, a cast party happens in an isolated beach house. There are discussions and recollections. And murder. You may watch a play and condemn wayward characters, but fail to recognise the same faults in yourself. The Dark Lord was Varma's first play and won second prize in the British Council Playscripts contest. It talks of Power and its repercussions.

A new translation of Nobel Prize-winning author Halldór Laxness's masterpieceLate one snowy midwinter night, in a remote Icelandic fishing village, a penniless woman arrives by boat. She comes with her daughter, the young but gutsy Salka Valka. The two must forge a life in this remote place, where everyone is at the mercy of a single wealthy merchant, and where everything revolves around fish. After her mother's tragic death, Salka grows into a fiercely independent-minded adult - cutting off her hair, educating herself and becoming an advocate for the town's working class. A coming-of-age story, a feminist tale, a lament for Iceland's poor - this is the funny, tender, epic story of Salka Valka. 'Laxness is a poet who writes to the edges of the pages, a visionary who allows us a plot' Daily TelegraphTRANSLATED BY PHILIP ROUGHTON

"This is a remarkable achievement and will hopefully lead to a revival of interest in an oft-overlooked literary genius." - Publishers Weekly, starred review A fresh translation of Nobel Prize-winning author Halld r Laxness's modernist masterpiece, Salka Valka. A feminist coming of age tale, an elegy to the plight of the working class and the corrosive effects of social and economic inequality, and a poetic window into the arrival of modernity in a tiny industrial town, Salka Valka is a novel of epic proportions, living and breathing with its expansive cast of characters, filled with tenderness, humor, and remarkable pathos. On a mid-winter night, an eleven-year-old Salv r and her unmarried mother Sigurl na disembark at the remote, run-down fishing village of seyri, where life is "lived in fish and consists of fish." The two women struggle to make their way amidst the domineering, salt-worn men of the town and their unsolicited attention, and, after Sigurl na's untimely death, Salv r pays for her funeral and walks home alone, precipitating her coming of age as a daring, strong-willed young woman who chops off her hair, earns her own wages, educates herself through political and philosophical texts, and, most significantly, becomes an advocate for the town's working class, ultimately organizing a local chapter of the seamen's union. "Nowhere in Laxness's novels is the conflict between the shining ideal of socialism and the dignity of individual people on plainer display than in Salka Valka... It never even occurs to Salka that the bastards might grind her down." -- Salvatore Scibona, The New Yorker

In the Valley of Shadows. Poems This book is in Romanian. It is Romanian poet Ovidiu Oana-p r u's collection of poems that speak about the phenomenon of Death. Romanul vieţii conceput de Dumnezeu are doar două părţi. For nearly two years, hospital staff and nurses have been working at the limit of their capacity on hermetically sealed COVID wards. Struggling with worsening physical and mental health, having to wear protective equipment for hours on end and being constantly worried about contracting the virus and passing it on to family members, they have endured ordeals that are hard for outsiders to appreciate. With his new project, the photographer Günter Valda – himself working as a hospital nurse – aims to give frontline healthcare workers a voice and put a face to their experience. He asked hospital staff to send him self-portraits from work and to jot down their thoughts and feelings. The result is a collection of snapshots showing faces that are marked by the dramatic scenes that unfold before them every day, with furrows, dents, and red lines caused by tightly fitting masks and protective gear. Who are the people behind these masks? What keeps them motivated? What are their thoughts? Valda’s book is a deeply emotional testimony to our time. With its powerful images, it stands in solidarity with those on the frontline of the fight against the pandemic. Text in English and German.
