The Coastal Zone

The Coastal Zone

F.John Vernberg; Winona B. Vernberg

CONCERNS ABOUT THE HEALTH of the environment have become firmly embedded in the public's list of vital issues confronting present and future generations. The emergence of environmental issues as a significant part of the societal agenda can be traced to the 1960s and 1970s, although threats to the world ecosystem were identified much earlier. In The Coastal Zone, John and Winona Vernberg, the preeminent scholars on the southeastern coastal environment, encourage the general public to gain a more in-depth understanding of environmental science, especially as it pertains to the future of our treasured coastal communities. Using case studies of the southeastern coast, the Vernbergs provide an overview of the ecological characteristics of the coastal zone and urge readers to become aware of environmental consequences resulting from human disturbances such as chemical and biological contamination and habitat alterations. With the rise of urbanization and an ever-increasing population, coastal communities are being subjected to intense multiple stresses resulting from conflicting demands for use of finite resources. In order to save these limited resources for the benefit of present and future generations, the Vernbergs argue that local citizens need to understand the interaction between ecological, economic, and social factors and become actively involved in determining effective resource management policies.

A unique look at the cultural, environmental, historical, literary, metaphorical, and political role of the wolf. Echo Loba, Loba Echo is a story about the metaphor of the wolf and how this is echoed in the lives and minds of people. A metaphor that embodies worldviews colliding, and the collision, the fallout, we live with still. It is a story about wolves' own cultures, survival stories, acts of rebellion, and vital roles in maintaining healthy territories. And it is also a story about what we have been told to forget, or never even know, and what wolves show us about ourselves. Through essay and poetry, the metaphor of the wolf, and loba - for she-wolf - is examined the way one might observe the light off a prism, in multi-dimensional ways. The associations are many and diametrically varied. Wolf as scapegoat, villain, outcast, blamed for human violence. Wolf as warrior, guide, mother to stray or orphaned children as well as her own pups. The Ojibwe word for wolf is ma'iingan: the one sent here by that all-loving spirit to show us the way. Wolf (Latin: lupus), which is another word for whore (lupa), for woman. Wolf, another word for backcountry. Yet the choice is not an easy duality, not simply between the notion of wolf as heroine or wolf as devil.

Adventures are always unexpected; it's in their nature to be so. But when Wynona is forced to leave her bustling, successful life in order to return to the dismal hometown she thought she'd left behind for good, she is confident that the last thing she's embarking on is an adventure. How could visiting her dying sister Beth and facing her dreadful past be anything but a miserable tragedy? Meanwhile, the local sheriff discovers the dead body of an exotic animal keeper near an empty, open cage labeled with the haunting sign: "DRAGON BEWARE." As word gets out about the escaped beast, a group of live-action role players, including Wynona's ex-boyfriend Brandon, decide that finding the dragon could be the boost they need to get more game cred. At first, Wynona sees this as just another example of how lame Brandon is, but Beth urges her to look at their quest as a beautiful belief in the unknown. Confronting one surreal situation after another, Wynona is pushed beyond the breaking point when she encounters a supernatural experience that defies human explanation and leads her to entertain the possibility of a loving God capable of miracles.

Three days ago, I got a call from my sister and parents, asking if I could come down to Texas for the Home-coming dance for my sister's school. Due to the fact that I missed everyone like crazy, as well as the fact that I would not be able to come home for Thanks-giving, I had said yes. Even though it meant me having to fly back to Los Angeles right after the dance, I would not miss the chance to surprise my sisters and my best friends and good friends for anything

Portuguese Women in Toronto

Portuguese Women in Toronto

Wenona Giles takes a new look at migration in this innovative study of Portuguese women by examining the gender, class, and race relations of the immigrant Portuguese population from the micro level of personal experience to the macro level of the long-lasting societal repercussions of immigrant status and welfare on their children. Comparing across two generations of Portuguese Canadian women, the book delves into issues such as cultural heterogeneity among Portuguese immigrants, the ambiguity of work and gender politics, the concept of 'home' versus nationalism, and raises concerns about the ways in which global political and economic inequities have affected Portuguese women's citizenship. Drawing on over sixty interviews with Portuguese immigrants and community workers in Toronto, Giles weaves theoretical perspectives around direct quotes to provide a complete picture of the Portuguese immigrant experience. Her case study of Portuguese women sheds new light not only on Portuguese immigrants to Canada, but also on Canadian nationalism, immigration, and multicultural policies, and their connection with national and global economic situations, that affect all immigrants to Canada.
