This book brings together scientific evidence and experience relevant to the practical conservation of wild birds. The authors worked with an international group of bird experts and conservationists to develop a global list of interventions that could benefit wild birds. For each intervention, the book summarises studies captured by the Conservation Evidence project, where that intervention has been tested and its effects on birds quantified. The result is a thorough guide to what is known, or not known, about the effectiveness of bird conservation actions throughout the world. The preparation of this synopsis was funded by the Natural Environment Research Council and Arcadia.

Progress in the field of bird conservation has advanced at an increasingly rapid rate. With the publication of this volume, the first in a projected series of "Bird Conservation" annuals, the U.S. Section of the International Council for Bird Preservation provides a review of research, and detailed discussions of key ecological topics, that help to synthesize and communicate the current wealth of information related to bird conservation in the United States. Concerned conservationists and both professional and amateur ornithologists will welcome this comprehensive guide to a burgeoning field. This premier edition reflects the composition and goals of the ICBP s annual publication. Each yearbook will first present a series of reports on a specific conservation issue or program submitted by biologists active in the field. Complementing this detailed forum on a crucial ornithological theme are two features conceived as regular components of the yearbook, and considered vital to its aims. A section dedicated to bird conservation news and updates presents current, concise reports by involved experts on various bird populations, conservation activities, and international treaties. This section is supplemented by a review of bird conservation literature that cites, and often annotates, recent published accounts of population trends, biology, and ecological standing of endangered birds. It is most appropriate that the U.S. Section of the ICBP should sponsor this venture. As the world s oldest international conservation organization, one that has played a prominent role in bird conservation and enjoyed an impressive record of success, it is well equipped to manage the ambitious project."

Bird Conservation and Agriculture

Writing for researchers, professionals and graduate students, the authors summarize the collapse of populations of many farmland bird species in the twentieth century, one of the biggest conservation problems of the day. They firstly set the historical context of change in agriculture and bird communities since the eighteenth century, and introduce the bird communities of agricultural land today. They then provide an overview of this very active area of applied conservation science, including in-depth case studies of 16 species that, taken together, illustrate the many ways that agricultural intensification has affected bird populations. Moreover, they show how this evidence base, coupled with recent greening of agriculture policy, has provided opportunities to manage agricultural land to better integrate the needs of food production and bird conservation. They conclude by looking forward to challenges that the conservation of bird populations on agricultural land is likely to face in the near future.

Whether we live in cities, in the suburbs, or in the country, birds are ubituitous features of daily life, so much so that we often take them for granted. But even the casual observer is aware that birds don't fill our skies in the number they once did. That awareness has spawned conservation action that has led to notable successes, including the recovery of some of the nation's most emblematic species, such as the Bald Eagle, Brown Pelican, Whooping Crane, and Peregrine Falcon. Despite this, a third of all American bird species are in trouble - in many cases, they're in imminent danger of extinction. The most authoritative account ever published of the threats these species face, "The American Bird Conservancy Guide to Bird Conservation" will be the definitive book on the subject. The Guide presents for the first time anywhere a classification system and threat analysis for bird habitats in the United States, and the most thorough and scientifically credible assessment of threats to birds published to date, as well as a new list of birds of conservation concern. Filled with beautiful color illustrations and original range maps, the Guide is a timely, important, and inspiring reference for birders and anyone else interested in conserving North America's avian fauna. But this book is far more than another shout of crisis. The Guide also lays out a concrete and achievable plan of long-term action to safeguard our country's rich bird life. Ultimately, it is an argument for hope. Whether you spend your early weekend mornings crouched in silence with binoculars in hand, hoping to check another species off your list, or you've never given much thought to bird conservation, you'll appreciate the visual power and intellectual scope of these pages.
The International Politics of Bird Conservation

The International Politics of Bird Conservation

The International Politics of Bird Conservation assesses international cooperation on migratory and endangered birds in different regions of the world. Robert Boardman illustrates that - although birds are protected in international treaties, by national legislation and through the projects of non-governmental organizations - the threats to many species have mounted. Threats arise from ecologically inappropriate agricultural and forestry practices, the spread of cities and the draining of wetlands, among other factors. The author focuses on regional cooperation between governments, NGOs and international organizations. It questions the effectiveness of international cooperation on the protection of birds, particularly migratory and endangered species. The rise of conservation-related scientific research and the historical evolution of bird protection efforts are discussed, as are regional developments in Africa, the Americas, the Arctic, Antarctica, Asia, Australasia, and Europe. The author concludes by identifying emerging trends in environmental governance and suggesting reforms to strengthen these arrangements. This book will prove a fascinating read for researchers, academics, organizations and specialists in a wide range of fields including: bird conservation and wildlife protection, environmental law and policy, global governance, regionalism and transborder cooperation.
