Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires has been called the Paris of Latin America, and the comparison is just, for in style of life and city design Buenos Aires resembles not only the City of Light but also the other great world capitals—London, Rome, New York. Buenos Aires: 400 Years attests to the long, diverse, and fascinating life of this urban mass of some six hundred square miles and eleven million inhabitants, which began as a tiny palisaded outpost on the remote fringe of the Spanish Empire. That colonial past is skillfully described here, but so too is the future of Buenos Aires. Each essay reveals much about the sociological and economic life of the city and the dynamic history of its people. This informative volume derives from a conference held at the Library of Congress in September 1980, which was dedicated to the 400th anniversary of the founding of Buenos Aires. The conference was jointly sponsored by the University of Texas at Austin and the Municipality of Buenos Aires.

Cuban Javier is sick of living in a loveless, dysfunctional relationship and plans to break up with his Argentine girlfriend but on the eve of their "break-up- dinner-date" she is diagnosed with an aggressive form of lung cancer and is given approximately one month to live. When she wishes to return home to die, he decides out of guilt not to end their relationship and out of obligation to accompany her to Buenos Aires. Against their better judgement the two embark on a journey of the heart, self discovery, and experience a re- awakening of their love for one another. But is it real or are they both using it as a way to escape the reality of their situation? Although this break-through Novella voyeuristically looks at what it feels like to be going through the death process and the effects it has on a relationship, it is far from a typical "romantic love story" or even a "death bed story". The way the protagonist (Cuban) details the relationship, both past and present, reads with the wit and humour of a Nick Hornby Novel. As Gloria goes through the death process she begins to turn inwardly, towards her spiritual self, searching for enlightenment - her wish is to die unto herself before she dies physically. Yet her heart is torn between seeking spiritual truth and a romantic resurgence of her love for Cuban. The book is broken up into two parts: Dreamer and Seeker. Dreamer is told from Cuban's point of view and chronicles up to the point of them leaving for Buenos Aires. Then Seeker continues on from where Dreamer left off but with Gloria narrating. Both are very different in style and tone and this allows the author to cover a lot of ground by doing this. The book weaves it's way effortlessly, through college humour to profound spiritual insights. Ultimately, this Novella is a daring and challenging work, which has a lot going for it but wont be for everyone. If you liked Kazuo Ishiguro's "Never Let Me Go" and Hermann Hesse's spiritual masterpiece "Siddhartha" and can somehow imagine a exhilarating mix between the two of them and Nick Hornby's "High Fidelity" - then this book is for you.

Whether for tango, football or art, passions in Buenos Aires run high. The largest city in Argentina, it is chaotic and lively, dangerous and cosmopolitan, and presents seemingly unlimited attractions for tourists. This book provides a view into the city today, and into its past. Europeans colonized Buenos Aires in the 16th century, and from this modest start it had boomed by the end of the nineteenth century. Its history is one of excesses and swings between authoritarian and democratic governments. By examining Buenos Aires' past, we can appreciate what remains as story, urban myth, or reality. Jason Wilson explores the history behind the monuments, buildings, and people of the city. Essays on present-day Buenos Aires - its parks, cemeteries, museums and bookshops - reveal what makes the city tick, while listings provide handy references for the traveler. Buenos Aires, one of the first titles in the innovative 'CityScopes' series, is an authoritative introduction and intimate guide to the past and present of a vibrant, fascinating city.

The most European of South American cities, Buenos Aires evokes exile and nostalgia. A nineteenth-century replica of Paris or Madrid set adrift in an alien continent, its identity is neither of the Old World nor the New. The city's rootlessness has famously found expression in the melancholy of tango and, more recently, in a vogue for psycho-analysis even more widespread than New York's. Jason Wilson explores this contradictory and culturally rich city by tracing its development from remote settlement to modern metropolis. Taking landmarks, both well-known and hidden, as starting-points for a journey of discovery, he looks at the events, people and writing which have shaped modern Buenos Aires and its cultural life. The city of Borges and Cortazar: the European literary tradition, magical realism and fantasy, the construction of an Argentine voice. The city of tango: the music of longing and despair, a meeting-point of machismo and sensuality, lowlife culture of the port. The city of passions: the cult of Evita Peron, the life-and death matter of football, the totalitarian political legacy

Nick Caistor has lived for several years in Buenos Aires as well as visiting it often over the past three decades. He has reported on Argentina for the BBC and is a translator as well as the author of several books on Latin America. The architect Le Corbusier once called Buenos Aires the capital of an imaginary empire . From its foundation in the sixteenth century, Argentina's main city has been a place of the imagination as well as the scene of many striking historical events. From foreign invasions to more modern-day coups d etat and dictatorships, the city's turbulent history has been paralleled by a vibrant popular culture born out of the hardships of immigration and longing for a lost homeland. This cultural guide looks at the impact of history and the efforts of men and women to build a city that would fulfil their dreams, as well as bringing today s Buenos Aires vividly to life for the visitor. From the new skyscrapers along the front of the huge river of silver to the picturesque portside Las Boca where hundreds of thousands of immigrants first faced a new continent, Buenos Aires has created its own legend, lived out today in tango bars, on football pitches, in cafes where intense debates take place, or people simply watch the ever-changing parade of passing inhabitants. Nick Caistor takes the reader to the insider s Buenos Aires. He shows how the past has shaped its streets, how Argentine politics has left its mark on almost every corner, how each wave of new inhabitants has added to the city s cultural mix. He explores the complex legacy of Spanish colonialism and Peronism as well as considering the city's representation by writers from Darwin and Humboldt to Borges and Cortazar. Analysing the foundations of Porteno culture, he reveals a city obsessed by nostalgia yet rich in music, dance and spectacle.
