Dieter Roth (1930–1998) was an artist of astonishing breadth and diversity, producing graphics, drawings, paintings, sculptures, assemblages, and installation works involving sound recordings and video. He was also a composer, musician, poet, and writer. Roth was particularly noted for his influential artist's books, including Literaturwurst (1961–74), a series of books made using traditional sausage recipes but replacing the sausage meat with pages torn from other publications. Roth kept diaries and notebooks throughout his life, using and reusing them in his art and writing. The idea of keeping a diary—finding a way to record the passing of time and document his life—is a fundamental theme of his artwork. Illustrations of pages from Roth's diaries and copybooks of his major works, including A Diary (1982), Flat Waste (1975), Solo Scenes (1997–98), and Bar II (1983–97), accompany art historical assessments by contemporary scholars and contributions from his peer Jan Vos and his son Björn Roth. Dieter Roth's unique and eclectic Tischmatten ("Table Mats") incorporate drawings, paintings, photographs, and ephemeral materials. Roth placed these gray cardboard mats on tables in his apartment, studios, and houses, collecting what he referred to as the "traces of my domestic activities." Along with spontaneous doodles and drips and stains from the kitchen, Roth affixed leftover food, notes, and photos to the mats, creating still lifes that he would supplement with painting and collage and that had an emphasis on symmetry and mirror images. Dieter Roth, Björn Roth: Work Tables and Tischmatten offers a new interpretation of these significant yet often misunderstood works, which Roth himself considered to have influenced the development of his painting in the late 1980s. The book includes the artist's writings about the Tischmatten, and an insightful essay by Andrea Büttner resituates them within the greater body of the artist's output.
Dieter Roth Collected Interviews
The first publication in English of Dieter Roth’s complete interviews The oeuvre of Dieter Roth (1930–1998) encompasses painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, film, video, music, typography, design, architecture and, last but not least, literature. ‘His books alone would give him a place of honour in 20th-century art,’ wrote Richard Hamilton, who championed Roth very early on. But is there a philosophy that ties it all together? What intellectual design, what personality stands behind this immense body of work? In his interviews, Roth offered many surprising and fascinating clues to his life and thought. Yet the majority of the interviews were in German, some even in Swiss German. With this book, all thirty-eight interviews are available in English, in full, for the first time. Included are the essential conversations with Irmelin Lebeer-Hossmann in 1976 and 1979, the Hamilton interviews, and also the very intimate interview Roth conducted with Patrick Frey just a few days before his death. For Roth, whose expectation of art was that it not be harmless, but show what is, the interviews were an attempt to depict what happens when speaking – one makes slips of the tongue and loses one’s train of thought, different languages get spoken and misunderstandings arise. He always expressed himself frankly and unguardedly. For anyone who wants to become acquainted with Dieter Roth – the artist and thinker-about-art as well as the human being – there is no better, more amusing and authentic introduction to be found than the richly illustrated collection at hand, which also presents many of his poems and prose texts in English for the first time.

Although he is regarded as one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century for his artists' books, prints and sculptures often made with found materials, Dieter Roth (1930-1998) always thought of himself mainly as a writer, viewing his artistic work as a way to earn money for his writing. The use of language accordingly forms a leitmotif throughout Roth's entire oeuvre. Drawing on significant works from various phases of Roth's career, Dieter Roth: Balle Balle Knalle explores an essential connective thread in Roth's varied body of work, showing how text and image were intimately connected for the artist and how his literary and artistic endeavors cross-pollinated each other. This volume, published to accompany an exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, includes new texts by Sven Beckstette, Julia Gelshorn, Benjamin Meyer-Krahmer and Stefan Ripplinger.

Few New Testament topics have been discussed as often and as intensely as Q, the hypothesized second major source alongside the gospel of Mark for the gospels of Matthew and Luke, and the parables. And yet, no monograph to date has been devoted to considering the parables in Q. In addition to filling this gap in New Testament scholarship, Dieter T. Roth addresses the need to move scholarship on both Q and the parables forward along methodological and interpretive lines. Roth considers Q not as a text behind Matthew and Luke that needs to be reconstructed but rather as an intertext between Matthew and Luke that offered plots, characters, and images in parables that were taken up by Matthew and Luke and utilized in their own respective texts. In addition, Roth draws on recent parables research in his examination of the 27 parables in Q (two spoken by John the Baptist, one by the Centurion, and 24 by Jesus) in order to consider their purpose and function in this early Christian text.

Dieter T. Roth presents an extensive study of the so-called “staurogram,” argued to be the earliest visual depiction of the crucifixion of Christ. Roth examines the origins of this depiction in early New Testament manuscripts as a ligature or compendium of two letters in certain abbreviations of the words “cross” (stauros in Greek) or “crucify” (stauroo in Greek) in which the Greek letter rho is superimposed upon the Greek letter tau. In this work, the staurogram, ultimately understood to be a simple yet powerful depiction of Jesus crucified, is analyzed and located within the framework of ancient abbreviations, the nomina sacra, and the developing Christian visual culture in order to offer, for the first time, a wide-ranging presentation of this symbol in early Christianity. From the symbol’s origins within words in some of our earliest, extant New Testament manuscripts to its use as a free-standing Christogram, this volume provides important insight into how Christians, beginning with the staurogram, depicted visually their faith in a crucified Christ.
