The term "Elmer" means someone who provides personal guidance and assistance to amateur or would-be amateurs. Way up on a ridge top over looking Chapman Grove, West Virginia is such an Elmer. But he doesn't know it yet. So what happens when a rebellious teenager deserted by her mother, meets up with this cranky old man who seems only interested in his amateur radio?

Th. Lund. Hun har tidligere gitt ut flere diktbøker, men dette er hennes debut som barnebokforfatter. Bokens fargerike illustrasjoner er tegnet av kunstmaler Astrid Haagensen.

The poems of Elmer Diktonius place him in the forefront of literary expressionism. His idylls and his novel give him high rank among Northern Europe's greatest literary innovators in the twentieth century. He has an unusual drama because of his ambiguous involvement with the politics of the left and his hesitation between internationalism and a deep Finnish patriotism. George C. Schoolfield provides the uninitated reader with a biographical and critical overview of Diktonius's life and work and calls attention to his artistic triumphs, defeats, and contradictions.

As one of the most outstanding and innovative playwrights of the 20th century, Elmer Rice made and sustained his reputation with a series of hit plays and provocative experimental work which, next to the output of Eugene O'Neill, remains the most varied canon of theatrical writing produced by an American dramatist. This reference book overviews his life and career and provides plot synopses and critical commentaries for his plays. The volume also provides cast and credit lists for major productions and an exhaustive bibliography of primary and secondary materials. When critics of the mid-twentieth century ranked American playwrights, they often had to pause before promoting Eugene O'Neill over Elmer Rice as first among his peers. Like O'Neill, Rice had an astoundingly long and productive life in the American theatre. He made and sustained his reputation with a series of hit plays and provocative experimental work which, next to the output of O'Neill, remains the most varied canon of dramatic literature produced by an American playwright. This reference book is a thorough guide to Rice's fascinating career. This book makes Rice's writings accessible to a wide audience and reveals just how extensive his works are. He was a voluminous writer of letters, articles, and diatribes as well as plays, memoirs, and novels. This sourcebook offers a chronology of his achievements, along with plot synopses and critical overviews of each produced or published play. Theatre researchers will find cast lists and an exhaustive bibliography of reviews of productions, while the listing of archival sources should be of help to those wishing to explore his canon in greater depth. The short biography illuminates Rice's involvement at all levels of cultural production, as a playwright, producer, director, teacher, and polemicist for various theatrical and political causes.

Sinclair Lewis

Sinclair Lewis' world-famous satire of religious hypocrisy and the excesses of the Roaring ʼ20s. Universally recognized as a landmark in American literature, Elmer Gantry scandalized readers when it was first published, causing Sinclair Lewis to be "invited" to a jail cell in New Hampshire and to his own lynching in Virginia. His portrait of a golden-tongued evangelist who rises to power within his church--a saver of souls who lives a life of duplicity, sensuality, and ruthless self-indulgence--is also the record of a period, a reign of grotesque vulgarity, which but for Lewis would have left no trace of itself. Elmer Gantry has been called the greatest, most vital, and most penetrating study of hypocrisy that has been written since the works of Voltaire. With an introduction by Jason Stevens

This is the story of Elmer McCurdy, a failed plumber from Bangor, Maine, who drifted west to become a failed outlaw. He arrived in Oklahoma a few decades after the golden age of outlaws and attempted to resurrect the lost art of train robbing. In 1911, after a short spree of comically bungled robberies, a sheriff's posse caught up with him and shot him dead.In death, Elmer McCurdy accidentally found fame. From the Oklahoma funeral home that propped up his preserved corpse and charged a nickel-a-look, to the sideshows of the Great Patterson Carnival, where he was exhibited as a felled outlaw, McCurdy became big business. His post-mortem career in show business lasted until 1976, when he was discovered painted orange and hanging by the neck in a California amusement ride. Mark Svenvold has reconstructed the bizarre itinerary of the corpse through sixty years of freakshows, sideshows, carnivals, and exploitation movies, capturing some of this country's greatest fantasies and most elabourate publicity stunts.
Elmer Bischoff

Elmer Bischoff

Susan Landauer

University of California Press

Elmer Bischoff (1916-1991) is generally regarded as one of the leaders among the artists in the San Francisco Bay Area who, after contributing to the local emergence of Abstract Expressionism during the 1940s and 50s, shifted the terms of their spectacularly sensuous brushwork to recognizable imagery. Bill Berkson writes that if 'David Park was the classicist of the founding triad of the Bay Area Figurative painters, and Richard Diebenkorn the modernist, Bischoff was the romantic'. Designed to accompany a major retrospective of Bischoff's work, this superb volume is lavishly illustrated with duotones and color plates that faithfully capture the subtle variations in shade that characterize the painter's oeuvre. Berkson and Susan Landauer, both of whom knew Bischoff, provide the definitive view of the life, art, and teaching career of this important artist. Native to the Bay Area, Bischoff studied at the University of California under the 'Berkeley School' modernists Worth Ryder, Erle Loran, and Margaret Peterson. His experience during World War II profoundly affected his view of the world and his place in it. In 1946, Bischoff joined the faculty of the California School of Fine Arts where - with colleagues Edward Corbett, Richard Diebenkorn, Claire Falkenstein, David Park, Ad Reinhardt, Mark Rothko, Hassel Smith, and Clyfford Still - he found himself at the hub of avant-garde expression in the Bay Area. Throughout his career, Bischoff applied his visual intelligence and unusual personal integrity in creating a uniquely varied body of work that invites our investigation. Having interviewed many of the artist's surviving colleagues and family members, Landauer offers valuable primary documentation on Bischoff, the Bay Area Figurative School, and the cultural history of the Northern California art scene. Her lively text is supported with insightful research into the social and political background of the period. She considers Bischoff's career in relation to the European artists who influenced him, his interactions with his local contemporaries, and his reactions to the New York art scene. A useful chronology of the artist's life, a bibliography, and documentary photographs that Landauer uncovered during her research make this volume an invaluable resource for anyone interested in the artistic vision of Elmer Bischoff.
