Jennifer Reeser

This book - the author's fifth collection - contains new translations of Charles Baudelaire, poems of Paris, verses for the victims at Charlie Hebdo, poems of New Orleans, and more. These poems have appeared in journals such as the Paris digital revue, "Levure Litteraire," in Europe's leading literary e-zine, "Recours au Poeme," in American academic journals such as "Able Muse" and "THINK," in mass publications such as "The Writer," "The National Review," and others. With a foreword by French scholar and Baudelaire authority, Kathryn Oliver Mills. "The breath of Paris pushes at my shutters," writes Jennifer Reeser, twenty-first-century fl neuse and elegant, rhyming translator of the great 19th-century French poet, Charles Baudelaire. Fleur-de-Lis is an example of how deeply a European city and that city's poet can enter an American writer's heart. Though Jennifer Reeser is no innocent abroad and hardly "maudit"-she is deeply Christian-the ghost of the nineteenth century haunts the cadences of this immensely talented, stylish, New-Orleans-based formalist whose work confronts "the malformations of her soul" (Fleur-de-Lis / Fleurs du Mal): I have seen queens' swans, moved a man to cry, heard Bach played in the Metro on guitars. I have made love in Paris. Let me die. All of the nineteenth century is here, but filtered through a sophisticated, twenty-first-century sensibility, constantly moving between what was and what is. The journey is fascinating, rich, knowing, and endlessly circumfluent. Though Reeser is "besotted" with Jesus, she dives deeply into darkness as well, and boundaries (herself / Baudelaire, New Orleans / Paris) fade. She is-as Baudelaire said of his fl neur -"a mirror as vast as the crowd itself...a kaleidoscope gifted with consciousness" ("The Painter of Modern Life"). -- Jack Foley

Rainbow Fleur de Lis: Essays on Queer New Orleans History is an anthology of eighty-five short, easy-to-read essays that originally appeared in Ambush Magazine and French Quarter Journal. Author Frank Perez has collected essays on a wide variety of topics in LGBTQ+ history and arranged them into multiple sections. Each section contains five essays and begins with a brief introductory overview that ties the individual pieces together. The book opens with Gay Carnival and provides a unique glimpse behind the scenes of this distinct New Orleans tradition. "Bars and Gay Spaces" examines the ever-shifting queer centers of gravity throughout the French Quarter. The section on the AIDS epidemic demonstrates how, by the end of the 1980s, New Orleans was a model city for providing AIDS-related services. "Arts and Letters" highlights figures such as lesbian photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston and playwright Tennessee Williams. The next section looks at homophobia in New Orleans in the 1950s. "Activists and Activism" traces the birth and rise of queer activism in New Orleans. Historical surveys of several organizations are then provided, followed by a unit on the Up Stairs Lounge fire. A section on Southern Decadence follows before the book turns its attention to how gay men saved the French Quarter a hundred years ago. Several legendary entertainers are then featured, as is the history of Pride in New Orleans. The book closes with a section on historical scholarship and several interview transcripts. Altogether, these essays provide an invaluable resource on New Orleans LGBTQ+ history.

Love is primal...and heartbreak? Inevitable. the bee and the fleur de lis is a collection of deeply personal poetry born of hopeless romanticism and truly heartbreaking experiences. Through both free verse and rhyming poetry, D R Kendel plays with language to provoke curiosity and sentiments that tug at the readers' heartstrings. Her linguistic and punctuation choices contrast romanticism and harshness to capture the beauty love has to offer as well as the pain one must endure while loving in their lifetime. References to the poets, songwriters, and artists who have inspired her can be found scattered throughout Kendel's work, and her word choices often reflect her love of botany and nature's charm. This collection has a broad appeal for readers who love beautiful, captivating poetry and who are interested in exploring love and relationships.
