During John Thompson's sadly attenuated lifetime, he completed only two volumes of poetry. At the Edge of the Chopping There Are No Secrets and Stilt Jack (published posthumously), but seldom has such a slim oeuvre supported such a large reputation. When John Thompson: Collected Poems and Translations was first published in 1995, the reasons for Thompson's stature became clear, and in the twenty years since then, his influence has only grown larger. Thompson seeks out the darkest places of the heart, then floods them with light. These remarkable poems evoke the deep woods, the relentless turning of seasons that churn life into death, and back again to life. They unflinchingly examine his relationships, drawing out the pain and joys of domesticity. Confessionally raw, but oblique and beautiful, Thompson's poetry — and in particular, his experiments in Stilt Jack with adapting the ghazal, a poetic form with origins in Arabia — has influenced three generations of poets. As Peter Sanger notes in his definitive introduction, "For many young Canadian poets, composing a ghazal sequence has become a rite of passage, and Thompson is often addressed or alluded to as a tutelary figure." Reissued to coincide with the twentieth anniversary of its first appearance, this volume, edited and introduced by Peter Sanger, now revised and updated with new information and insights, gathers together all of Thompson's extant mature poems and translations, including, in addition to the two published books, poetry published only in periodicals, unpublished poetry, and Thompson's haunting translations from several of his French Canadian contemporaries and the great French poet René Char.

(Willis). Continuing where the First Grade book left off, John Thompson's Modern Course for Piano Second Grade is thoughtfully designed to advance students steadily while keeping each lesson engaging. This time-tested, world-renowned method helps students build both technical skill and musical understanding through progressive exercises and examples that expand beyond basic five-finger positions. The Second Grade book introduces exciting new elements, including hand expansion, pedal use, major and minor scales, arpeggios, and chord analysis. With every lesson, students encounter musical excerpts from light opera, ballet, oratorio, and classic works by Bach, Moart, Beethoven, Chopin, and more. These carefully selected pieces not only enhance pianistic skill but also deepen students' appreciation for music itself. Perfect for beginners, this course nurtures well-rounded musicians who are eager to explore the world of music further.
(Willis). Continuing the legendary Modern Course series, John Thompson's Modern Course for Piano Third Grade elevates students from technique to true musical interpretation. Building from the foundation of the Second Grade book, this book empowers students to interpret music with individuality, moving beyond imitation to authentic expression. With thoughtfully curated pieces, including works from La Cucaracha to Beethoven's Septet, students explore a broad musical landscape. Each piece is designed to highlight key aspects of pianistic skill while introducing fundamental principles of interpretation. Special notes accompany each example, encouraging students to understand a composer's intentions and form their unique responses. This book also introduces 24 short Preludes across all keys as preparatory exercises to build fluidity in various key signatures. For further technical growth, students can use the supplementary Third Grade Velocity Studies, a collection of master etudes from composers like Czerny and Burgmuller. Together, these resources provide a complete and engaging path to becoming a versatile, expressive pianist ready for more advanced repertoire.
(Willis). The Modern Course series provides a clear and complete foundation in the study of the piano that enables the student to think and feel musically. It may be preceded by the Teaching Little Fingers to Play series. Pianism and musicianship march on in this book and the student becomes increasingly familiar with works from the masters.
