Nevin Aladag lets wind and rain play music. She follows the sound of traces she finds in the city and makes objects sound melodies seemingly by themselves. The result is a perceptive and always humorous "score" that has a quality that is as ironic as it is poetic. Aladag's works are represented in many international collections and are regularly shown in exhibitions and biennials worldwide. The Museum Villa Stuck is showing her most comprehensive solo presentation to date, combining famous groups of works, such as the "Music Room Athens" shown at documenta 14, with a few surprises. The accompanying catalogue offers over 200 mostly full-page illustrations. Essays by renowned art scholars such as Rachel Jans and Adam Szymczyk and a contribution by the multi-award-winning writer Ulrike Draesner, conceived especially for the book, illuminate the artist's work from different perspectives. The special embossing that Aladag developed for the cover gives the publication a special artistic touch.
Crossing Traces: Nevin Aladag
Few artists are in such high demand today as sculptor, installation- and performance-artist Nevin Aladag. In 2025, she was awarded the renowned State Prize for the Visual Arts of the Land of Baden-Württemberg, which also entails an exhibition. The accompanying publication follows the conceptual approach upon which much of Aladag’s work is based. She removes everyday items—rugs, furniture or instruments—from their original context and transforms them into artworks that transcend the boundaries of sculpture, installation, video, and sound art. Again and again the audience are confronted with their familiar habits of perception and with questions relating to tradition, belonging, and identity. With a compact format and a number of surprising features, this publication provides a fascinating insight into Aladag’s artistic career to date and her latest works. With an illustrated booklet including an introductory text and 30 postcards with numerous reproductions of her works, this publication is a unique tribute to her oeuvre. Text in English and German.
