Polymers are the archetypal modern materials, used in every aspect of everyday life. This Primer gives a thorough introduction to Polymer Chemistry, ranging from a historical perspective, through the development of high-tonnage materials earlier in the twentieth century, to modern high-performance materials that have a range of useful additional properties. The authors have long experience in the teaching of polymer science to undergraduates, and also experience in the polymer industry. A feature of this Primer is a discussion of practical industrial aspects in the technology of these materials.

Extensively revised and updated to keep abreast of recent advances, Polymers: Chemistry and Physics of Modern Materials, Third Edition continues to provide a broad-based, high-information text at an introductory, reader-friendly level that illustrates the multidisciplinary nature of polymer science. Adding or amending roughly 50% of the material, this new edition strengthens its aim to contribute a comprehensive treatment by offering a wide and balanced selection of topics across all aspects of the chemistry and physics of polymer science, from synthesis and physical properties to applications. Although the basics of polymer science remain unchanged, significant discoveries in the area of control over molecular weight, macromolecular structure and architecture, and the consequent ability to prepare materials with specific properties receive extensive mention in the third edition. Expanded chapters include controlled radical polymerizations, metallocene chemistry, and the preparation of block and graft copolymers, as well as multiarmed and dendritic structures. Reflecting the growth of polymer applications in industry, the book presents detailed examples to illustrate polymer use in electronic, biological, and medical settings. The authors introduce new understandings of rheological behavior and replace old and outmoded methods of polymer characterization with new and up-to-date techniques. Also new to this edition are a series of problems at the end of each chapter that will test whether the reader has understood the various points and in some cases expand on that knowledge. An accompanying solutions manual is also available for qualifying course adoptions. Offering the highest quality, comprehensive coverage of polymer science in an affordable, accessible format, Polymers: Chemistry and Physics of Modern Materials, Third Edition continues to provide undergraduate and graduate students and professors with the most complete and current coverage of modern polymer science.

The word polymer comes from the Greek 'polumeres', which means 'having many parts'. Polymers are large molecules consisting of repeated chemical units ('mers') joined together, usually in a line, like beads on a string. Each 'mer' is typically made up of more than five and less than five hundred atoms; the word 'polymer' is applied when you have more than about 50 'mers' stuck together. Polymer research and development continues to move on at breakneck speed throughout the world. This book presents a guide primarily to the book literature over the last ten years and is fully indexed by author, title and subject.

The second edition of Macromolecular Chemistry broadens into two areas: biomacromolecules, Volume 1 and polymers, Volume 2. Polymers covers polymer history, polymerization reactions, polymer morphology, technology, characterization and testing, processing, and recycling. The book discusses the building blocks of synthetic polymers, comparison of macromolecules and polymers, polymer classification, and illustration of polymer chemical structures. Polymerization reactions such as step-growth polymerization and chain-growth polymerization are extensively discussed. It then presents tacticity, molecular interactions and polymer crystals. Biodegradable polymers, biomedical polymers, conducting polymers, electroluminescent polymers, water-soluble polymers, additives, adhesives, fibres, and coatings are described. The next section explores inorganic polymers such as polysilanes, polysiloxanes, and polyphosphazenes. The book then delves into polymer characterization and testing, including Infrared Spectroscopy, Raman Spectroscopy, NMR, X-ray Spectroscopy, and Electron Microscopy, and the last section addresses selected polymer processing techniques such as moulding, casting, extrusion, coatings, and foaming.

Polymers and Nanomaterials for Gene Therapy
Polymers and Nanomaterials for Gene Therapy provides the latest information on gene therapy, a topic that has attracted significant attention over the past two decades for the treatment of inherited and acquired genetic diseases. Major research efforts are currently focused on designing suitable carrier vectors that compact and protect oligonucleotides for gene therapy. The book explores the most recent developments in the field of polymer science and nanotechnology, and how these advancements have helped in the design of advanced materials. Non-viral vector systems, including cationic lipids, polymers, dendrimers, peptides and nanoparticles, are potential routes for compacting DNA for systemic delivery. However, unlike viral analogues that have no difficulty in overcoming cellular barriers and immune defense mechanisms, non-viral gene carriers consistently exhibit significant reduced transfection efficiency due to numerous extra- and intracellular obstacles. Therefore, biocompatibility and potential for large-scale production make these compounds increasingly attractive for gene therapy. This book contains chapters on the engineering of polymers and nanomaterials for gene therapy, and how they can form complexes with DNA and avoid both in vitro and in vivo barriers. Other chapters describe in vitro, ex vivo, in vivo gene therapy studies, and the current issues affecting non-viral gene therapy.

Polymers for Vibration Damping Applications is a detailed guide on the use of polymers and polymer composites for vibration and shock damping. The book begins with two chapters that introduce the fundamentals of both vibration and shock damping. The next part of the book presents in-depth coverage of polymeric materials for vibration damping, including viscoelastic properties, design of polymer systems, and modes and applications. Finally, measurement techniques are discussed in detail. Throughout the book, the different perspectives of materials and engineering are considered, and both mathematical and conceptual approaches are used. This is an essential resource for all those looking to understand the application of polymers for vibration damping, including researchers, scientists and advanced students in polymer science, plastics engineering, materials science and mechanical engineering, as well as engineers and R&D personnel in the automotive, marine, defense and construction industries.
Polymers and Neutron Scattering

Polymers and Neutron Scattering

This is the first book written specifically to introduce the new-comer and the non-expert to the experimental techniques and basic theory necessary to understand the results obtained when using various neutron scattering techniques. Neutron scattering has become widely applied to the study of problems in polymer science and technology and yet there is no other textbook for newcomers to refer to. This is therefore a unique introduction to the basic theory and techniques making the advantages of neutron scattering, as a tool for studying polymer behaviour, much more accessible to the newcomer and non expert.

The result of a collaboration between a theoretician and an experimentalist, this book is devoted to the static properties of flexible polymers in solution. It presents the vast progress made by both theory and experiment in recent years. Despite the variety in the chemical composition and physical properties of long polymer chains, when in solution they show a universality in their behaviour. On the experimental side, the use of photon and neutron scattering has led to a better understanding, while the use of computer simulation has also produced interesting results. This work is the result of a collaboration between a theoretician and an experimentalist, who have both worked for many years on polymer solutions.

This book is devoted to the static properties of flexible polymers in solution. It presents the progress made by both theory and experiment in the years up to its original publication in 1990, and remains one of the most advanced books available on this subject. Polymers in Solution was written for scientists and engineers who have serious research interests in newer methods for characterization of polymer solutions, but who are not seasoned experts in the theoretical and experimental aspects of polymer science. In particular, it is assumed that the reader is not familiar with the development of theoretical notions in conformational statistics and the dynamics of chainlike molecules; how these two seemingly diverse theoretical topics are related; and the role played by polymer-solvent interactions. Chapter 1 thus presents background material that introduces most of the essential concepts, including some of the mathematical apparatus most commonly used in these areas of theory. This introduction is followed by five chapters that are more closely related to particular experimental techniques. These chapters introduce further theoretical notions as needed. Three of the chapters present con siderable detail on the experimental methods, while two other chapters deal more with the interpretation of experimental results in terms of current theories. Although neutron scattering has become an almost standard technique for the study of conformational properties of macromolecules in the solid state, there has been less emphasis on its application for characterization of polymer molecules in solution. Chapter 4 covers this growing area of application.
