Robert Gober rose to prominence in the mid-1980s and was quickly acknowledged as one of the most significant artists of his generation. In the years since, his reputation has continued to grow, commensurate with the rich and complex body of work he has produced. Published in conjunction with the first comprehensive large-scale survey of the artist’s career to take place in the United States, this publication presents his works in all mediums, including individual sculptures and immersive sculptural environments, as well as a distinctive selection of drawings, prints, and photographs. Prepared in close collaboration with the artist, it traces the development of a remarkable body of work, highlighting themes and motifs that emerged in the early 1980s and continue to inform the artist’s work today. An essay by Hilton Als, and an in-depth chronology with extensive input from the artist himself, foregrounds images from Gober’s archives, including many neverbefore- published photographs of works in progress.

This book marks the long-term installation of Robert Gober’s (born 1954) seminal Untitled (1992) at Glenstone Museum. Untitled is an immersive, multi-sensorial installation with diverse constituent parts: sinks with running water, darkened exterior pathways, a brightly-lit interior chamber, a hand-painted 360-degree mural and discrete sculptural elements made to appear like prison windows, boxes of rat bait and bundles of newspaper. Robert Gober includes never-before-published archival images of the work’s original presentation at the Dia Center for the Arts in New York, an oral history based on interviews with the artist and collaborators, an original essay by author Jim Lewis and extensive imagery of the piece as installed at Glenstone Museum.

Providing an expansive and revelatory look at the collaborative artistic relationship between photographers and printers, this book focuses on the work and practice of Schneider/Erdman, Inc., a Manhattan-based printing business owned by Gary Schneider and John Erdman from 1981 to 2001. Well-known within the booming New York photography scene, Schneider and Erdman printed works by artists such as Richard Avedon, Matthew Barney, and Nan Goldin. In addition to a thorough overview of Schneider and Erdman’s technical mastery of printing methods and materials, Analog Culture also sheds light on the importance of the close personal relationship between photographers and printers within the art-making process. The striking works reproduced in the volume are enhanced by exclusive interviews with Schneider, Erdman, and their collaborators, offering an unparalleled behind-the-scenes view of New York’s photographic culture in the late 20th century.
