Sex education, like other controversial issues, has generated a great deal of polemical writing, much of which is likely to leave the interested reader both confused and factually under-informed. In this 1974 publication, Sex Education, Rex Rogers adopted a fresh and helpful approach - a book of readings with a distinct empirical flavour. Deliberate emphasis is given to studies that provide data on the utilisation, justification and effects of sex education in the belief that such knowledge is essential for the intelligent approach to this subject. Although written with the needs of those researching or teaching in the field of sex education particularly in mind, this collection contains little beyond the grasp of the non-specialist.

In the book Sex Education (first published in 1989), Philip Meredith focuses upon the British situation to investigate the political management of school sex education. The author presents new insights into the problems of state provision of an aspect of education which many feel should be the exclusive domain of parents. He explores the hidden political dynamics which dictate and influence the moral debate over the theory and practice of sex education and argues for a more rational involvement of government in resolving the problems of practice. The book includes comparative details of political management and curriculum design, drawn mainly from Sweden, Denmark, the Federal Republic of Germany, Poland, and Belgium, which clarifies or provides alternatives to the British handling of the subject. Basing his recommendations on these examples of more constructive management of sex education, Philip Meredith challenges the government to take a more positive role by delegating policy decision-making in this area to a nationally representative, independent, and authoritative body of experts, whose deliberations the government would defend against minority moral interests who wield a disproportionate power.

This is a contemporary book that addresses global issues in adolescent sexuality education. With chapters from international experts in sexuality, this book provides comprehensive coverage of issues including effective sexuality education, abstinence programs, and risk prevention efforts, drawing on research currently being conducted in schools and agencies across the globe. Emphasising "developmentally appropriate sex education", readers will learn about adolescents' preferences for sources of sex education, as well as the timing and topics that are critical to include. Given an increasing use of social media and technology by teens, the book addresses the intersection of sexuality and technology. This includes topics such as sexting and on line victimisation, and youth exposure to sexually explicit on line material. Strategies for both school and parents to implement to safe guard their youth are provided. With the wealth of knowledge from the international contributors to this book, culture and diversity are addressed throughout but especially in chapters on gender expansiveness, sexual minority youth, and youth with disabilities. Recommendations are made for how schools can implement sex education with adolescents in a way that will be meaningful and effective. Adapting evidenced based curriculum to local settings, as well as conducting evaluations is addressed so that program planners can ensure adolescents are receiving accurate and comprehensive knowledge and skills to make informed decisions. The latter part of this book addresses the issue of the training that is required of teachers who implement sexuality curriculums. In order for programs to be successful, those who deliver them need proper training and support. Readers of this book are sure to gain essential knowledge necessary to design, implement and evaluate inclusive and effective sexuality education with a large range of youths.

Many of the lectures printed in this volume have formed the basis of a series given at Teachers College, Columbia University, during the summer sessions of 1914 and 1915, and during the academic year 1914-1915. Others were addressed to parents, to groups of men, to women's clubs, and to conferences on sex-education. In order to avoid extensive repetition, there has been some combination and rearrangement of lectures that originally were addressed to groups of people with widely different outlooks on the sexual problems. Several years ago the late Dr. Prince A. Morrow announced that a volume dealing with many of the timely topics of sex-education was to be prepared by the undersigned with the advice and criticism of a committee of the American Federation for Sex-Hygiene; but even before Dr. Morrow's death it became evident that this plan was impracticable. Three members (Morrow, Balliet, Bigelow) of the original committee collaborated in a report presented at the XV International Congress on Hygiene and Demography. Since that time the writer, working independently, has found it desirable to reorganize completely the original outline announced by Dr. Morrow. In accordance with a declaration made voluntarily in a conversation with Dr. Morrow, the author considers himself pledged to devote all royalties from this book to the movement for sex-education. Among the many persons to whom is due acknowledgment of helpfulness in the preparation of this book, the author is especially indebted for suggestions to the late Dr. Prince A. Morrow, to Dr. William F. Snow, Secretary of the American Social Hygiene Association, and to Dr. Edward L. Keyes, Jr., President of the Society of Sanitary and Moral Prophylaxis; for constructive criticism, to his colleagues, Professor Jean Broadhurst and Miss Caroline E. Stackpole, of Teachers College, who have read carefully both the original lectures and the completed manuscript; and to Olive Crosby Whitin (Mrs. Frederick H. Whitin), executive secretary of the Society of Sanitary and Moral Prophylaxis, who has suggested and criticized helpfully both as a reader of the manuscript and as an auditor of many of the lectures delivered at Teachers College.

A healthy relationship to gender and sexuality supports our well-being, both as individuals and as a community. The form of sex education that we bring to children and adolescents needs to serve them in cultivating useful capacities with which to meet the growing societal changes around this fundamental aspect of being human.Providing a healthy and socially constructive sex education is the responsibility not only of the primary caregivers, parents, and teachers, but also of the individuals in the wider community, who likewise contribute to the collective consciousness.Working to overcome our own biases and imbalances will prepare us to more readily awaken to the spiritual wisdom that can bring health and harmony into the evolving reality of gender and sexuality."Our bodies are our gardens, to which our wills are gardeners. --Shakespeare, OthelloThe insights shared in this book are important for everyone who is interested in understanding the various forms of human relationship, and how we might work together to bring about a healthier community life.
Sex Education In Eighteenth-Century France
Did ‘sex education’ actually exist in eighteenth-century France? Shaped by competing currents of religious dogma, atheist materialism and bourgeois morality, eighteenth-century France marked the beginning of what Michel Foucault called ‘une fermentation discursive’ on matters related to sex. But when we consult the educational theorists or philosophes of the time for their opinions on preparing a young person for life as a sexual being, we are met with a telling silence. Did an Enlightenment era that dared to make sex an object of discourse also dare to make it an object of pedagogy?Sex education in eighteenth-century France brings together specialists from a range of disciplines to address these issues. Using a wide variety of literary, historical, religious and pedagogical sources, contributors explore for the first time the nexus between sex and instruction. Although these two categories were publicly kept distinct, writers were effectively shaping attitudes and behaviours. Unraveling the complex system of rules and codes through which knowledge about sex was communicated, contributors uncover a new dimension in the practice of education in the eighteenth century.
