A deceptively simple adventure into the unknown using only paper, a pencil and a single lineWreck This Journal had a simple premise: destroy the book in all the ways you can imagine. The Line is even simpler: find pencil, start a line.As you move through the pages of Keri Smith's newest book, you'll be asked to let your line meander, explore the book's gutter, and jump around the edges of the pages. You'll hide your line, cut your line and even let someone else take over your line for a bit. The farther you get into the book, however, the more you'll discover that maybe things aren't as simple as they first seemed. The line has a mind of its own, and it's up to you to discover what's at the end of the line (hint: it's just the beginning).

An "utterly brilliant" (Library Journal) new novel from the author of the award-winning The Dream Life of Sukhanov. The line begins to form on the whispered rumor that a famous exiled composer is returning to Russia to conduct his last symphony. Tickets will be limited. The concert date unknown. Nameless strangers join the line, jostling for preferred position. But as the seasons change and the kiosk remains shuttered, these anonymous souls evolve into a community. Bound together in their longing for something wonderful and miraculous, they allow themselves to dream. An utterly transformative work that speaks to the endurance of the human spirit, The Line confirms Grushin's place in the pantheon of today's most important new writers.

Set in an alternative version of the 1990s, The Line imagines that the fate which befell Korea after World War II - division along ideological lines - also befell Britain. In this thriller, various forces north and south of the line battle one another in an attempt to reunify the country, even if it costs thousands of ordinary lives.

How AI will challenge our ideas about personhood. Chatbots like ChatGPT have challenged human exceptionalism: we are no longer the only beings capable of generating language and ideas fluently. But is ChatGPT conscious? Or is it merely engaging in sophisticated mimicry? And what happens in the future if the claims to consciousness are more credible? In The Line, James Boyle explores what these changes might do to our concept of personhood, to 'the line' we believe separates our species from the rest of the world, but also separates 'persons' with legal rights from objects. The personhood wars over the rights of corporations, animals, over the question of when life begins and ends have always been contentious. We ve even denied the personhood of members of our own species. How will those old fights affect the new ones, and vice versa? Boyle pursues those questions across a dizzying array of fields. He discusses moral philosophy and science fiction, transgenic species, nonhuman animals, the surprising history of corporate personality, and AI itself. Engaging with empathy and anthropomorphism, courtroom battles on behalf of chimps, and doom-laden projections about the threat of AI, The Line offers fascinating and thoughtful answers to questions about our future that are arriving sooner than we think.

Anders is a God who's forgotten how to be divine. Seriously. As a once-worshiped Satyr who spent his life spreading joviality across Europe now in the midst of a world-wide Pagan revival, you'd think he'd be having the time of his life after centuries of being pushed to the sidelines by society. Yet he remains convinced that the world doesn't need his kind anymore as he maintains the pretense of being a Minnesotan retiree. But when the Leyline running through his small resort town begins sputtering its magical essence erratically, and a new, self-trained Witch comes to town on the heels of this change, it'll be up to him to investigate the instability in the energy source every magic user in town relies on, discover just how false his ""retirement"" has been and how many of the town's Sorcerers, Wizards, and Warlocks he's inadvertently taken on as apprentices over the years, and finally take on the persona of The Old Man, a greater and wiser God than he had ever been before.

I had completely given up on life. Knocked out of the marines. No job. No home. I could not even face the people in my life who loved me the most, my parents. But then something weird happened. My son disappeared. That threw everything out of whack. Suddenly I did not know what to do, how to live, how to even beg anymore. And the voices. These...voices...started showing up in my head.Life would never be the same. Locked up, handcuffed, thrown into hell itself. I could not tell wrong from right. I could not tell me from them. And the only thing that seemed obvious was that if I did not find my son soon, no one would.

The Line is the culmination of 25 years of learning to write through failed attempts. For the first time, I finished one. It's my version of an Epic Saga. I just cut out all the boring parts. There is drama, intrigue, love and under it all a message. Whether you should go to the Right way, or the Left, is entirely up to you. Somewhere along the way, like our hero, you'll learn that the purpose of life is to live. The answers are so simple they are almost impossible. The only chains holding you are those you've placed on yourself. If you can't find God, be God. Like I said, this is the first one I've finished and I took quite a few liberties. Hopefully the next one is better. Thanks for reading and please enjoy.
