"How do you expect to make progress when you're unable to process these things that have happened to you?" he asks. "There is no progress without facing these things and accepting them."I stare at him offering nothing, my heart rate calm and even. The thought of doing something to him outside of office hours has occurred to me more than once, but he's trying to help me so I can't. If I ever catch him doing anything unethical, or anything I consider to be punishable, he'd better watch his step though. I'd sooner maim him than come to these appointments anymore.Meet X.Some people are too broken to be fixed.

X, that symbol of the unknown, that abbreviation for things as diverse as Christmas and the stock exchange, finds a fresh and exciting existence in Voski's new work. Her previous book "Bones" was a journey of recovery and discovery. The wisdom she found along the way is bedded down and expanded upon in her latest publication. It is said that poetry is the best words, in the best order. Voski, with her usual boldness and flair, experiments, explores and excels at her craft in "X". It is truly a joy, a wow of a read.Algebra was never this much fun

Shane Rhodes

Blewointment

One of the first lines of X, Shane Rhodes' sixth book of poetry, is a warning: "this book of verse demands more of verse, this book demands perversity." He goes on to write: This book is about where I live, a place still settling, still making the land--law by law, arrest by arrest, jail by jail--its ownsnow blownHeed this warning. In X, Rhodes takes poetry from the comfortable land of the expected to places it has seldom been. Writing through the detritus of Canada's colonization and settlement, Rhodes' writes poems to and with Canada's original documents of finding and keeping. He writes a poem to each of the eleven numbered treaties (the Post Confederation Treaties between many of Canada's First Nations and the Queen of England)--he writes to the fonts he finds in Treaty 5, the river he finds in Treaty 6, and the chemicals he finds in Treaty 8. Rhodes' writes poems to and with the Indian Act. Beyond the treaties, Rhodes writes formal poetry using Indian status registration forms. He writes to the memory of Oka. He writes to the Government of Canada's Apology for the Indian Residential School System. He writes to the procreating beavers he finds in the Royal Charter of the Hudson Bay Company. X culminates in "White Noise," a long poem grown from Canada's collective rants, threats, cries and shouts in response to the Idle No More protests and the hunger strike of Chief Theresa Spence. Through out the book, Rhodes surprises with what poetry and art can actually do with the seemingly unsalvageable and un-poetic that surrounds us. The design of X is also exhilarating. Not only is the book reversible--it must be read in two directions--but every page bursts with design, interference and thought.X sings a new national anthem for Canada, an anthem stripped of patriotic fervor that truly sings of the past many would rather forget and the current state of Indigenous/settler race relations in Canada, an anthem fit for "a land held by therefores, herebys and hereinafters."

"An inventive plot and incisive character studies elevate MWA Grand Master Grafton's twenty-fourth Kinsey Millhone novel...This superior outing will remind readers why this much-loved series will be missed as the end of the alphabet approaches."--Publishers Weekly (starred review)X: The number ten. An unknown quantity. A mistake. A cross. A kiss... Perhaps Sue Grafton's darkest and most chilling novel, X features a remorseless serial killer who leaves no trace of his crimes. Once again breaking the rules and establishing new paths, Grafton wastes little time identifying this deadly sociopath. The test is whether private investigator Kinsey Millhone can prove her case against him--before she becomes his next victim.

Where Frank L Baum meets Stephen King in the land where the one-armed man is king... If you meet a man with one arm, you may wonder how he came to be that way. Maybe it was some sort of industrial accident, or perhaps an amputation due to an illness or a disease. Or maybe it was because of something you could never in your darkest, most horrible nightmares imagine. And how do I know so much about one-armed men you may ask? Because I met one. His name was X.

X is the New York Times number 1 bestseller and thrilling, twenty-fourth book in the Kinsey Millhone Alphabet series from Sue Grafton. In hindsight, I marvel at how clueless I was . . . What I ask myself even now is whether I should have picked up the truth any faster than I did, which is to say not fast enough . . .When a glamorous red head wishes to locate the son she put up for adoption thirty-two years ago, it seems like an easy two hundred bucks for private investigator Kinsey Millhone. But when a cop tells her she was paid with marked bills, and Kinsey's client is nowhere to be found, it becomes apparent this mystery woman has something to hide. Riled, Kinsey won't stop until she's found out who fooled her and why.Meanwhile, the widow of the recently murdered P. I. – and Kinsey's old friend – Pete Wolinsky, needs help with her IRS audit. This seemingly innocuous task takes a treacherous turn when Kinsey finds a coded list amongst her friend's files. It soon leads her to an unhinged man with a catalogue of ruined lives left in his wake. And despite the devastation, there isn't a single conviction to his name. It seems this sociopath knows exactly how to cause chaos without leaving a trace. As Kinsey delves deeper into the investigation she quickly becomes the next target of this tormentor. But can Kinsey prove her case against him before she becomes the next victim?

"X" is the kiss and betrayal, the embrace, the crucifixion, the mathematical unknown. In his sixth book of poems, James Galvin writes from a deep, philosophical engagement with the landscape and faces a "vertigo of solitude" with his marriage dissolved, his only daughter grown and gone, and the log house he built by hand abandoned. "What did I love that made me believe it would last?" he asks.Something has to be true enough to beTaken for granted. In the hospital I sawAn old manCaressing the face of an old woman. This same man, young, caressed her faceIn just that way. That's the stillnessAt the center of change--A sadness worth dying for, I swear--There is no other.--from "Dying into What I've Done""James Galvin has a voice and a world, perhaps the two most difficult things to achieve in poetry."--The Nation"In James Galvin we have a superior poet."--American Book Review"Galvin's poems have the virtues of precise observation and original language, yes, but what he also brings to the table is a rigor of mind and firmness of phrasing which make the slightest of his poems an architectural pleasure."--Harvard ReviewJames Galvin has published five collections of poetry, most recently Resurrection Update: Collected Poems 1975-1997, which was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Award and the Lenore Marshall/The Nation Prize. He is also the author of the critically acclaimed prose book, The Meadow and a novel, Fencing the Sky.
