Richard Hooker and Anglican Moral Theology

Richard Hooker and Anglican Moral Theology

A.J. Joyce

Richard Hooker (1554-1600) is often credited with being the founding father of Anglican moral theology. This book is the first major study to examine in depth the extent to which this claim is justified, and to evaluate the nature of Hooker's contribution to this aspect of Anglican tradition. The study roots Hooker firmly within his own historical context and considers his text principally on its own terms; thus it avoids many of the problems that have bedevilled modern Hooker scholarship, particularly where attempts have been made to 'claim' him for one particular theological tradition over another, or to approach his work primarily with an eye to its continued relevance to contemporary debate within Anglicanism, both of which can lead to significant distortions in the way in which Hooker is read and interpreted. What emerges amounts to a significant re-evaluation of much of the conventional wisdom about Hooker's place within Anglicanism, as well as a range of original insights into the nature, content, and style of his work and its wider significance.

Journey to My Heart with Jesus: My walk to a deeper faith through battling chronic illness, healing from childhood sexual abuse, and discovering the e
What happens when we get gut wrenchingly honest with God about our anger, our doubts and our fears? Read Joyce's story and find out Joyce Ritchie was living a wonderful life with a great family and a thriving career. While a long time Christian, she admits her relationship with Jesus was fairly superficial. Her life began to unravel, though, when her health mysteriously began to fail. She earnestly sought answers about her life and about Jesus. She dug deeper into who Jesus really was and who she really was in Him. Realizing how superficial her Christian walk had been, she also prayed for a deeper faith. These prayers were answered, but not in the way she expected. Her life began to crumble around her as she found her marriage in a precarious position. Seeking counseling, she soon found herself battling flashbacks, body memories that were complete with the dry heaves, and a spiritual battle she was ill prepared for when she began to realize her childhood was not what she had always assumed. Joyce takes the reader deep into her journey of battling a chronic illness and recovering memories of childhood sexual abuse. Her story is powerful, personal, and vulnerable. She opens her journals and her counseling sessions, allowing us to experience the pain, anger, shame, loneliness and feelings of guilt...but also to share in the victories, the spiritual lessons, the freedom, and the ultimate deep relationship she gained with Jesus along the way. Jesus wants to heal our hearts, and this book underscores how He will often go to great lengths to do so. It tackles the hard but honest truth about the realities of childhood sexual abuse and chronic illness, but doesn't end there. Joyce focuses on the God of redemption, healing, and love. This is an honest portrayal of what happens when we truly open our hearts to Jesus and allow Him to speak truth and healing into our pain. The journey is intense and spiritually and physically exhausting, but the divine destination to Joyce's healed heart is a glorious testimony to God's ability to transform lives. It will inspire you to a deeper faith in God and in His ability to heal all wounds past and present. -Discover how trials DO have a higher purpose in our lives -Learn about the long-term effects of sexual abuse, but also that healing IS possible -Understand how wrestling with God over your doubts and anger CAN actually lead to a deeper faith.

Louisburg Sluggers is more than a baseball tale. This moving story stirs the hearts of fans and non-fans alike as a diverse group of teenage boys lead batting coach Nate Lugo and his ever present bulldog Gunner into the alien world of technology, into his daughter's world of underclass students and finally back to his old stomping grounds of Fenway Park. Along the way, future major league slugger Richie D'Angelo, Luther Gordon and the rest of the South End High kids along with the upper crust trio of Roger Grey, Cecil Underwood and Harmon Hudson, all learn to tolerate each other and become a team.Using his father's association with the M.I.T. Intelligence Lab, Harmon Hudson discovers the Spirit of Technology in the delightful form of the computer character, Razzle Dazzle. This futuristic element combined with the nostalgia of the nation's oldest ballpark enables Clyde Gooding and Billy Ray Block, old school sports announcers, to rekindle their enthusiasm and, along with the reader, to experience the Game of Games in which the boys face off against the Red Sox. The backdrops of Fenway Park, the posh Beacon Hill area and the Inner City of Boston lend an excellent canvas for this timeless rendering of values and fair play. All these elements are woven together to form a compelling story that is often exciting, sometimes heartbreaking and ultimately uplifting for all readers regardless of age.

Inner Lives

New York University Press

An intimate collection of African American women's voices on their lives in prison The rate of women entering prison has increased nearly 400 percent since 1980, with African American women constituting the largest percentage of this population. However, despite their extremely disproportional representation in correctional institutions, little attention has been paid to their experiences within the criminal justice system. Inner Lives provides readers the rare opportunity to intimately connect with African American women prisoners. By presenting the women's stories in their own voices, Paula C. Johnson captures the reality of those who are in the system, and those who are working to help them. Johnson offers a nuanced and compelling portrait of this fastest-growing prison population by blending legal history, ethnography, sociology, and criminology. These striking and vivid narratives are accompanied by equally compelling arguments by Johnson on how to reform our nation's laws and social policies, in order to eradicate existing inequalities. Her thorough and insightful analysis of the historical and legal background of contemporary criminal law doctrine, sentencing theories, and correctional policies sets the stage for understanding the current system.

Advanced Space Propulsion

Over the past several decades, hoping for accelerated scientific returns, the space industry has eagerly researched propulsion. This has resulted in an array of breakthrough technologies that would allow not only more rapid missions to further study the planets and asteroids within our solar system, but also ventures to distant destinations into deep space, or even enabling human settlements on the moon, Mars, and beyond. Advanced Space Propulsion: Technologies, Missions, and Computer Modeling includes coverage of all these technologies in an integrated manner. The volume, written by a team of sector-specific R&D experts, touches upon fundamentals cardinal to the understanding of [i] orbit theory and its implications for control, estimation, and optimization of trajectory and attitude and [ii] how each mission is designed (depending primarily on the mass of the payload, but also on how far from Earth the launch vehicle needs to go), and then succeeds in consolidating them with software and computer applications for simulations and modeling. It continues with a discussion on the complete gamut of in-space propulsion power sources and concludes with both human and robotic mission-related case studies and future implementation examples. The outcome is a carefully calibrated and self-contained resource that will prove to be invaluable for graduate and senior undergraduate students, researchers, scientists, and engineering professionals alike.

'This clear and comprehensive textbook will be invaluable for undergraduate and graduate courses on elections and voting behaviour. Complex theoretical and statistical ideas are explained lucidly and effectively - no mean achievement' - Representation 'Voters and Voting fills a yawning gap in the study of elections and voting behaviour. No other book today matches the breadth and depth of coverage provided by Jocelyn Evans. This book is destined to become a staple in university courses on elections, parties and political methodology. It will also be a well-thumbed addition to scholars' personal libraries' - David M Farrell, The University of Manchester This accessible textbook provides a comprehensive introduction and guide to theories of voting and electoral behaviour. The text introduces the concept of voting and traces the historical origins and development of voting theories up to and including present-day techniques and models. Approaches reviewed include the early social and psychological models, through the rational choice, spatial modelling and economic theories, to the more sophisticated contemporary models. By carefully presenting and explaining the major technical and methodological advances made in voting studies, the text serves to provide a complete review of the different approaches and techniques that have characterized this area of study from its origins to the present day. The book includes separate chapters on abstention and electoral competition, and employs a range of empirical examples from a number of countries. It concludes by looking at how voting studies might evolve in the future. Voters and Voting: An Introduction will be essential reading for all students of electoral and political behaviour across the social and political sciences.
