If I have been a vagabond, and have never been able to root myself in any one place in the world, it is because I have no early memories of any one sky or soil. It has freed me from many prejudices in giving me its own unresting kind of freedom; but it has cut me off from whatever is stable, of long growth in the world. -- Arthur SymonsArthur Symons (1865-1945) was a central figure in the cultural and social networks of the British fin de si cle. He was an often controversial poet and critic who introduced British readers to French Decadence and Symbolism and had an equally important if largely unacknowledged influence on the development of modernism. In 1908 - the year of a mental breakdown that had a disastrous effect both on his career and posthumous reputation - W.B. Yeats referred to him as 'the best critic of his generation.' Symons's vast body of work also includes fiction and writings on the visual arts, music, theatre and the popular stage, as well as translations of Baudelaire, Mallarm , Verlaine and D'Annunzio. The essays in this volume reflect the breadth of Symons's interests, reassessing this dynamic writer who played a key mediating role between English and European literatures, and between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Arthur William Symons (1865-1945) is a haunting poet of the modern city, catching its dangerous, complex beauty in works that first introduced the imagery of the urban underworld into English poetry. He was a champion of the French Symbolists. Yeats, Pound and Eliot acknowledged their debt to him and were influenced by his sense of the city as the essential landscape of modernity. As a poet and critic, in his own right, though, Symons has come into his own in recent years. This selection is taken from the full range of Symons' poetry and prose, revealing an experimental writer exploring art, literature and music. Roger Holdsworth's introduction sets Symons in his context as both an 1890s Decadent and a precursor of Modernism.

Arthur Symons (1865-1945) was a British poet, dramatist and literary critic. He is now best known for his critical work, The Symbolist Movement in Literature (1899), and his role as a poet within the Decadent Movement. This volume makes a reassessment of Symons' work and its relationship to Cornwall and Anglo-Cornish Literature. Though usually recognized as being Welsh (he was born in Milford Haven in Pembrokeshire), Symons had Cornish parentage and was fully aware of his ethnicity. Not only did Symons write a number of distinctly Cornish poems, but he also completed a largely forgotten symbolist version of the legendary story of Tristan and Iseult (1917) in the form of an innovative stage drama. The text is presented here, alongside a new critical study of Symons' contribution to Anglo-Cornish Literature. Leading Cornish literary critic Alan M, Kent examines the historicist context of Symons' work, linking him to figures such as Oscar Wilde and W. B. Yeats; and also examines the psychological make-up of the writer. Symons suffered a mental breakdown during his life, which culminated in the production of his dramatic imagining of the legendary Celtic love triangle. Drawing on new evidence, Kent also demonstrates how the incorporation of a new character, Meriadoc, connects to his Cornish heritage, and perhaps even to the Cornish-language Medieval miracle play, Beunans Meriasek (The Life of St Meriasek). Kent argues that Symons is clearly an important figure in Cornish culture, meriting new academic treatment and consideration within the field of Cornish Studies.
