Alison Barbaron's Picture Book with Poems is unique in that it combines unusual artwork and poetry. The artwork is a collaboration between two Southeast Missouri artists, Aaron Horrell and Barb Bailey. They create novel, miniature paintings by taking turns adding their own personal input to each mini. The outcomes are unanticipated and whimsical. The pictures will invite children to look for more than the obvious. The poetry is intended to be lighthearted and fun to read. Look for their trademark heart in each painting. Some are easy to see and some are not.

Spirit Children

Spirit Children

Aaron R. Denham

In parts of West Africa, some babies and toddlers are considered spirit children—nonhumans sent from the forest to cause misfortune and destroy the family. These are usually deformed or ailing infants, the very young whose births coincide with tragic events, or children who display unusual abilities. In some of these cases, families seek a solution in infanticide. Many others do not.Refusing to generalize or oversimplify, Aaron R. Denham offers an ethnographic study of the spirit child phenomenon in Northern Ghana that considers medical, economic, religious, and political realities. He examines both the motivations of the families and the structural factors that lead to infanticide, framing these within the context of global public health. At the same time, he turns the lens on Western societies and the misunderstandings that prevail in discourse about this controversial practice. Engaging the complexity of the context, local meanings, and moral worlds of those confronting a spirit child, Denham offers visceral accounts of families' life and death decisions.

You're here, she's there. And he's right in the middle keeping you from the one thing you want the most in life. What are you willing to do to get it? You are a spoiled trust fund playboy who recently lost your over-bearing and inordinately uptight parents in a tragic car accident. You got their wealth. You got their enormous mansion. Unfortunately, it still stinks of moderation and traditionalism which clashes gravely with your artistic and high-minded endeavors. You immediately hire a beautiful but married interior designer to cleanse the stain of contempt and austerity left behind in the house by your parents. Just like your obsession with finding and killing the rat in your new abode, you become fixated on the husband and must remove him as an obstacle to your covetous pursuits. If only the husband didn't exist. As you become more and more obsessed with the idea, you begin to slowly sink into a thick cesspool of despair and corruption. How will it end? Horribly.
Deliver Us From Evolution?: A Christian Biologist's In-Depth Look at the Evidence Reveals a Surprising Harmony Between Science and God
Is evolution an enemy to faith? Can God, Scripture, and science be reconciled? What evidence is there for evolution? Is it true?In this tour de force of scientific rigor and biblical insight, biologist Aaron Yilmaz examines the Creation vs. Evolution controversy from a scientific and biblical perspective, undergirded with psychological and philosophical understanding. With over 600 citations from peer-reviewed scientific journals, books, and university literature, he objectively and exhaustively investigates the evidence for not only an ancient earth but for the reality of evolution. With humility, humor, and wit, Yilmaz presents a surprising harmony between science and God, far more satisfying than Creationism or Intelligent Design. This fast-paced and engaging book powerfully demonstrates how science and faith, when properly understood, do not conflict and on the contrary lead to a deeper appreciation of God and a more intellectually fulfilling and spiritually rewarding life. Aaron R. Yilmaz holds an M.S. in Biology from the University of Saint Joseph, West Hartford, Connecticut (2015), and a B.S. in Biology with departmental honors from Oakland University, Rochester, Michigan (2013). He has formally studied evolution at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, performed research leading to peer-reviewed published scientific literature, and has taught biology at the college level.
A World of Disorderly Notions

A World of Disorderly Notions

Aaron R. Hanlon

From Jonathan Swift to Washington Irving, those looking to propose and justify exceptions to social and political norms turned to Cervantes's notoriously mad comic hero as a model. A World of Disorderly Notions examines the literary and political effects of Don Quixote, arguing that what makes this iconic character so influential across oceans and cultures is not his madness but his logic. Aaron Hanlon contends that the logic of quixotism is in fact exceptionalism—the strategy of rendering oneself an exception to everyone else's rules. As British and American societies of the Enlightenment developed the need to question the acceptance of various forms of imperialism and social contract theory—and to explain both the virtues and limitations of revolutions past and ongoing—it was Quixote's exceptionalism, not his madness, that captured the imaginations of so many writers and statesmen. As a consequence, the eighteenth century witnessed an explosion of imitations of Quixote in fiction and polemical writing, by writers such as Jonathan Swift, Charlotte Lennox, Henry Fielding, and Washington Irving, among others.Combining literary history and political theory, Hanlon clarifies an ongoing and immediately relevant history of exceptionalism, of how states from Golden Age Spain to imperial Britain to the formative United States rendered themselves exceptions so they could act with impunity. In so doing, he tells the story of how Quixote became exceptional.
