Irenaeus, Joseph Smith, and God-Making Heresy seeks both to demonstrate the salience of “heresy” as a tool for analyzing instances of religious conflict far beyond the borders of traditional historical theology and to illuminate the apparent affinity for deification exhibited by some persecuted religious movements. To these ends, the book argues for a sociologically-informed redefinition of heresy as religiously-motivated opposition and applies the resulting concept to the historical cases of second-century Christians and nineteenth-century Mormons. Ultimately, Irenaeus, Joseph Smith, and God-Making Heresy is a careful application of the comparative method to two new religious movements, highlighting the social processes at work in their early doctrinal developments.

The UK population has been ravaged. Nate must support his family, and Ruby is looking for somewhere to call home. And then tragedy strikes upon tragedy."The ground was a carpet of flesh and bones; thirty - or even twenty - feet away, it became almost impossible to distinguish body from body, body part from body part. Death's great road roller had been this way and slain everything in its path. Yet there were shimmers of movement, hands that answered classroom questions and arms that swam against a tide of innards where coils of intestines held them back. Faces without jaws; half-faces, eyeless faces, skinless faces; faces a mother would no longer recognise. Jagged and sharp were the protruding cheekbones and half-hanging bridges of noses. The mass was whole. It squirmed with life - the longer they looked, the sicker they felt. And yet it was impossible not to stare in awe; this beach of flesh that represented the humanity of now: nurses and doctors, labourers and homeless, the aged and the young; all just threads in this tapestry."

The sun-scorched tundra shimmers, and blood drips between the cracks.Life on the plains is tough, dangerous, and just plain boring. Elissa dreams of breaking the monotony and winning the Liberty Trials; a hoverbike race around the perimeter of the plains with entry to Neon City at stake. Her town sits in the shadow of the enormous blister of Neon's dome, within reach and yet forbidden. If she could only win... everything would change. If only the stranger hadn't appeared. If only she could get Quintessa, one of the three Queens, off her back. If only the murderous Rohen could get exactly what he deserved. So many questions. So many variants. When had life stopped being so boring?A sci-fi dystopian adventure in an inhospitable landscape, Plains of Ion is the second book in an epic series that will explore Man's technological and innate potential, and the search for hope when all looks bleak.Praise for the Neon series: "Neon Sands is sci-fi with conviction, and that conviction displays most evidently in setting. A world built of glorious and alienating sands, both a marvel and irritant. Chocka with filmic interludes, glowing horizons, red dusty skies. This novel quietly won me over.""It has great tension and some wonderful world building details which hook you in to the claustrophobic existence of the characters.""The tension really is well maintained throughout and the sense of mystery, high-stakes and justified paranoia that the characters experience is excellently portrayed."Neon Sands trilogy 2/3Neon series 2/9

Far beneath the city's depths burns far more than the fuel that feeds it.Stuck in the same dead-end job as his father, Rylan drinks himself into oblivion most nights. Better than the oblivion of the Link, everyone around him a slave to virtual reality. At least that's what he tells himself. His ex, Clarisse, has found herself a new lover, someone with more than a passing interest in him. They have a job for him, and it involves explosives.Best just to drink this one off. Wait it out, until everyone has regained their senses. That's the trouble though; everyone acts like robots and he feels like the only one with any sense. Any emotion. Emotion that triggers violence when a new friend exposes the wound inside his heart.A sci-fi dystopian adventure beneath the hyper-tech city of Neon, Flames of Apathy is the third book in an epic series that will explore Man's technological and innate potential, and the search for hope when all looks bleak.Praise for the Neon series: "Neon Sands is sci-fi with conviction, and that conviction displays most evidently in setting. The stars brought life to the planet, and the stars destroyed it.It was ash on fingertips, and vast. Stepping upon it gave the impression that it had come not from below, buffed by millions of years of wind slicing against rock, but rather from above; that perhaps it had drifted down and settled here. This is the post-apocalyptic sandscape that Calix and Annora must navigate - when they're old enough to join the scavenger crews outside of the domes, that is.They've spent their entire lives within Sanctum, the domed town that protects them from the dangerous sands that storm against the curved wall. But they are orphans, with questions about their heritage. With a childhood that prepares them to become scavengers. With a father figure in Kirillion who has an agenda all of his own - just what are they searching for when the scavenger crews depart? All grown up, they join Walker's crew, scouring the sand in giant Crawlers, ready to dig. When an accident unlocks childhood memories and murder, questions arise within the crew about where their allegiances lie, and what their true purpose is. And then their search hits the big time.A sci-fi dystopian adventure in an inhospitable landscape, Neon Sands is the opening book in an epic series that will explore Man's technological and innate potential, and the search for hope when all looks bleak.Praise for the Neon series: "Neon Sands is sci-fi with conviction, and that conviction displays most evidently in setting. Adam Smith

Christopher J. Berry

In 1776 Adam Smith (1723-90) wrote The Wealth of Nations , a book so foundational it has led to him being called the 'father of economics'. Today he is associated with the promotion of self-interest, a defence of greed and a criticism of any governmental 'interference' in market transactions which, if left to the 'invisible hand', will produce prosperity and liberty. Yet if Smith is actually read these associations are more a caricature than a faithful portrait. In this Very Short Introduction, Christopher Berry offers a balanced and nuanced view of this seminal thinker, embedding his fierce defence of free trade, competition, and assault on special interests in contemporary European history, politics, and philosophy. As Berry explores, Smith was far more than an economist. His book The Theory of Moral Sentiment, offered a complex account of ethics in the context of human social behaviour. His scope as a professor at the University of Glasgow, a major centre of the Scottish Enlightenment, was extensive. Beyond courses in philosophy and jurisprudence he also gave classes covering history, literature, and language. In addition to his two major works he also wrote a pioneering study of the history of astronomy as an illustration of the motivations that drive humans to seek answers to questions. He produced, again derived from his Glasgow classroom, an analysis of the development of grammar and language. As Christopher Berry shows, Adam Smith was no narrow thinker, but rather one who produced not only one of the greatest books in the history of social science, but also a wide-ranging body of work that remains significant today. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

This innovative study, by one of the most progressive political theorists of his generation, challenges the traditional ways of constructing and celebrating the corpus of political theory. Shapiro explores modernity via a reading of Adam Smith, confronting his philosophy and focusing on what he calls `the Smith effect', the dimensions of which are integral to modern capitalist political economy and the construction of the social, political and moral within that system.

"Peter Dougherty does the near-impossible in this brilliant book . . . [he] makes economics engaging and accessible." --Professor Larry J. Sabato, University of Virginia In this spirited and timely book, Peter Dougherty shows how economists are drawing on Adam Smith's civic writings to illuminate how the market creates not only fiscal capital, but "social capital." Dougherty demonstrates how Smith's ideas are currently experiencing a renaissance. He then explores several impressive initiatives to demonstrate what today's theoretical and practicing economists are accomplishing in the spirit of Adam Smith's moral sentiments: the institutional reform of transitional and developing economies; the financing of new technological, medical, and educational initiatives; and the economic revival of cities. Capitalism pervades every aspect of our daily life. Peter Dougherty now offers a fascinating peek at its hidden soul.
