The Civil War experiences of Albert C. Ellithorpe, a Caucasian Union Army officer commanding the tri-racial First Indian Home Guards, illuminate remarkable and understudied facets of campaigning west of the Mississippi River. Major Ellithorpe's unit- comprised primarily of refugee Muscogee Creek and Seminole Indians and African Americans who served as interpreters- fought principally in Arkansas and Indian Territory, isolated from the larger currents of the Civil War. Using Ellithorpe's journal and his series of Chicago Evening Journal articles as her main sources, M. Jane Johansson unravels this exceptional account, providing one of the fullest examinations available on a mixed-race Union regiment serving in the border region of the West.Ellithorpe's insightful observations on Indians and civilians as well as the war in the trans-Mississippi theater provide a rare glimpse into a largely forgotten aspect of the conflict. He wrote extensively about the role of Indian troops, who served primarily as scouts and skirmishers, and on the nature of guerrilla warfare in the West. Ellithorpe also exposed internal problems in his regiment; some of his most dramatic entries concern his own charges against Caucasian officers, one of whom allegedly stole money from the unit's African American interpreters. Compiled here for the first time, Ellithorpe's commentary on the war adds a new chapter to our understanding of America's most complicated and tragic conflict.

A standard reference on the application of network theory to the design of automatic control systems. The 1943 printing of The Analysis and Synthesis of Linear Servomechanisms was classified as restricted and distributed accordingly. After the close of WWII, the book was declassified in order to permit general dissemination of the material. From the Preface: This book is a formulation of a servomechanism design procedure based primarily upon an analysis of the system response to sinusoidal inputs of various frequencies. Although a knowledge of the transient performance of a servomechanism provides an excellent basis for predicting the response of the system to the conditions of a particular application, the complexity of most physical systems makes the computation of the transient performance and the translation of the resulting information into physical design criteria extremely laborious. On the other hand, knowledge of the response of the servomechanisms to sinusoidal inputs is not quite as useful in enabling a prediction to be made of the servo response to the conditions of most practical applications, but the computation of the sinusoidal response and the translation of this information into useful design criteria are much simpler.
The paperback edition, in four volumes, of this standard work will make it readily available to students. The scope of the work makes it valuable as a work of reference, connecting one period with another and placing each author clearly in the setting of his time.Reviewing the first edition, The Times Literary Supplement commented: ‘in inclusiveness and in judgment it has few rivals of its kind’.This first volume covers The Middle Ages (to 1500) in two sections: The Old English Period (to 1100) by Kemp Malone (John Hopkins University), and The Middle English Period (1100-1500) by Albert C. Baugh (University of Pennsylvania).
A concise intermediate text emphasizing review and refinement of grammar, development of reading skills, and expansion of vocabulary. Grammar and readings are integrated, and chapters are organized thematically. Text is all in Spanish.
Technologies such as synthetic biology, nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, and geoengineering promise to address many of our most serious problems, yet they also bring environmental and health-related risks and uncertainties. Moreover, they can come to dominate global production systems and markets with very little public input or awareness. Existing governance institutions and processes do not adequately address the risks of new technologies, nor do they give much consideration to the concerns of persons affected by them. Instead of treating technology, health, and the environment as discrete issues, Albert C. Lin argues that laws must acknowledge their fundamental relationship, anticipating both future technological developments and their potential adverse effects. Laws should encourage international cooperation and the development of common global standards, while allowing for flexibility and reassessment.

The Bay of Pigs, on the south coast of Cuba, was the scene in 1961 of an unsuccessful attempt by an armed force of exiled Cubans which had been organized, supplied and trained by the United States government. Investigative journalists and chroniclers characterized this event as, variously, the CIA out of control, a new and inexperienced president (Kennedy) victimized by bad advice, an outcome not preventable. This account, by a participant, proves much of the accepted information about this controversial event to be seriously flawed. In sharp and dramatic prose, Albert C. "Buck" Persons relates his involvement in the Bay of Pigs--from being approached to do a "temporary, confidential" job to receiving training by the "Company" in Florida, then on to a camp in Central America and the invasion attempt, in which two of his friends were killed. This is exciting history, unavailable until now to correct the record.
