2022

An Insider’s Perspective of Prostate Cancer: Understanding Effects, Management Options and Consequences provides scientifically based information on the management and treatment of prostate cancer. The text is designed to be neither prescriptive nor proscriptive, providing succinct, yet comprehensive details in ‘bite size chunks’ for ready assimilation and application. Sections cover recent approaches the prostate cancer landscape has made by providing background statistical and anatomical information that is followed by relevant genetic, immunological and background data. The book then proceeds to explain the mechanisms involved with cancer development and the spread and metastases that can occur in a minority of those diagnosed. In addition to acknowledging the importance of psychological effects of diagnosis and management interventions, the undervalued benefits of exercise are also emphasized, including information on holistic management. This comprehensive approach makes this a perfect reference for up-to-date information on all aspects of prostate cancer and its management.
A glimpse into the development of the American West through startling photographs of the frontier landscape and the rich culture of American Indian tribes Best known for his Civil War photographs, Alexander Gardner (1821–1882) also created two extraordinary bodies of work depicting the transformation of the American West: Across the Continent on the Kansas Pacific Railway and Scenes in the Indian County. In 1867, after joining the survey team for what became the Kansas Pacific Railroad, Gardner photographed the path of the proposed extension, emphasizing the ease of future railroad construction and economic development, while including studies of American Indians and settlements along the way. The following year, Gardner recorded peace talks with Indian tribes at Fort Laramie, Wyoming. Distinctly sympathetic to the plight of the American Indian, Gardner made candid documentation of individual chiefs, their encampments and daily life, burial trees, and the peace proceedings themselves. With a full catalogue raisonné of these two rare series, Alexander Gardner offers a complete visual index of these remarkable photographs, made at a critical moment in the history of the American West. On Alexander Gardner's Photographic Sketch Book of the Civil War

Soon after Alexander Gardner's "Photographic Sketch Book" was published, in 1866, it became the Civil War's best-known visual record and helped define how viewers, then and in subsequent generations, would come to know the war. Gardner's classic also became foundational in the history of American photography, combining, for the first time, words and images in a sophisticated and moving account. This book, written by the art historian Anthony W. Lee and the literary scholar Elizabeth Young, interprets the story of the war as told by Gardner, unraveling his careful choice of words and images and the complicated play between them, and understanding them against the backdrop of the literary and photographic cultures of the American antebellum and Reconstruction eras. This book presents a unique study of a pivotal American historical document, approaching it from the perspective of visual studies as well as American literature and history.
