Seraphim is a collection of poems consisting of two long poems, and 40 traditional poems. The first long poem is called Memoirs of a Demon, and it explores the universe of an Italian man living in XIIth century northern Genoa and Venezia as he makes a pact with the Devil out of a broken home, much like the Faustian legend, to attain legendary strength, wit, and charisma. The second is Seraphim, which tells the story of the love between a Seraph, as fabled by Dante's Divine Comedy, and a mortal poet. This collection of poetry is exclusively traditional, with meters borrowing from Russian poets such as Pushkin to Lesley's experimental stanzas.

‘It’s all real. All of it. Everything bad is real’ - MoeAlistair McDowall’s Pomona was first staged in 2014 and won properly startling, and startled, acclaim. Its edgeland setting permits a surrealistic disengagement of linear forms of time, which is both dreamlike and wildly funny; nightmarish and ominously enveloping. The play has as its imaginative springboard a landscape which is both real and surreal. It offers an unforgettable journey into radical uncertainty, alongside unpredictable action that presents and questions the forms by which all too much of British life is lived.Rabey offers us a wild plunge into this modern English urban rabbit hole, a haunting and bewildering high-stakes hunt for meaning and value, set in a gothic noir Manchester, possibly dystopian (or possibly not).

ALISTAIR MCDOWALL ‘uses language with virtuosity. He folds it, unfolds it, dirties it, mishandles it, and in doing so, he celebrates it...It is as a poet that he uses writing to honour its promises: to excite the imagination, to stimulate play, to provoke staging and to elevate the theatre.’ Le Monde‘McDowall’s plays are portals to the extraordinary.’ GuardianX: ‘McDowall masterfully plants ideas that grow until they explode into extraordinary shapes. Filthy humour breaks down into a cracked algorithm of letters and loss … a play that will gnaw away at you.’The StageThe Glow: ‘A mind-bending, ambitious play, which attempts impossible things, demonstrating the power of theatre to bridge the gap between imagination and reality.’Exeuntall of it: ‘Genius...an epic of inner life...McDowall brilliantly captures how febrile consciousness scribbles around our spoken half-truths.’GuardianNorthleigh, 1940: ‘Quietly devastating...[McDowall] is extraordinary at channelling his disturbing, poetic vision of the characters’ hidden worlds.’The TimesZero for the Young Dudes! A play for youth groups commissioned by the National Theatre and performed around the country in 2017.

From the Mayflower to the gold rush, the jazz age to Pearl Harbor, with portraits of figures as varied as Buffalo Bill, John D. Rockefeller and Martin Luther King Jr., here is the American story in all its triumphs and failures, grandeurs and tragedies. It is the defining portrait of a nation. ‘I was delighted when Mark Simmons asked me to write the foreword for this book – mostly because the request implied the book had actually been written and was ready to go. It’s a subject I have long wanted to see covered, and finally it has been. Excellent!’ Lee Child It is no coincidence that many of Alistair MacLean's most successful novels were sea stories. In 1941, he was called up after volunteering for the Royal Navy and served as Ordinary Seaman, Able Seaman, and Leading Torpedo Operator. For the majority of his service, he was on HMS Royalist, a modified Dido-class light cruiser, seeing action in the Arctic, and operations against the German battleship Tirpitz . The ship then deployed to the Mediterranean taking part in Operation Dragoon the invasion of the South of France and later in operations against German occupied Greek Islands in the Aegean. After which MacLean and Royalist were deployed to the Indian Ocean and operations against the Japanese in Malaya, Burma, and Sumatra. His wartime experiences coupled with exceptional literary skill resulted in the runaway success of his first novel HMS Ulysses (1955) followed by The Guns of Navarone (1957) and South by Java Head (1958). These three blockbusters cemented his position as one of the most successful and highly paid authors of the era. While not a whole life biography, Mark Simmon's book provides a fascinating insight into Maclean's war service and subsequent works, which deserve enduring popularity.
