East meets West in this fascinating exploration of conceptions of personal identity in Indian philosophy and modern Euro-American psychology. Author Anand Paranjpe considers these two distinct traditions with regard to historical, disciplinary, and cultural `gaps' in the study of the self, and in the context of such theoretical perspectives as univocalism, relativism, and pluralism. The text includes a comparison of ideas on self as represented by two eminent thinkers-Erik H. Erikson for the Western view, and Advaita Vedanta for the Indian.

This book discusses the relevance of tracing back the course of individual development noted in psychoanalysis (regression) and in Patañjali’s Yoga (prati-prasava).Although Freud found the diagnostic benefits in tracing the history of the patients’ early childhood experiences, he also recognized the influences of the history of civilization and evolution. He also viewed the regression to earlier history in a negative light. Ernst Kris, on the other hand, saw some benefits of regression. The nature and extent of the influence of Jewish mysticism on Freud is highly controversial, and scholars have pointed out the possible influence of Kabalarian mysticism, which held that enlightenment follows from going all the way back to the origin of human beings at the beginning of the cosmos. This view has an interesting parallel in Patañjali’s Yoga. This volume highlights these significant parallels in the Indian and the Western systems of knowledge in the study of human psychology and explores the need for their mutual understanding. It also examines converging trends in modern psychology to recognize the need for transcendence of ego in individuals. This book will be of immense interest to students, teachers, researchers, and practitioners of psychology, psychoanalysis, and Yoga Psychology. It will be of great interest to psychologists, counsellors, mental health professionals, clinical psychologists, yoga enthusiasts, and those interested in transpersonal psychology.

Psychology in the Indian Tradition

Springer, India, Private Ltd
2015
sidottu
This authoritative volume, written by two well-known psychologist-philosophers, presents a model of the person and its implications for psychological theory and practice. Professors Ramakrishna Rao and Anand Paranjpe draw the contours of Indian psychology, describe the methods of study, explain crucial concepts, and discuss the central ideas and their application, illustrating them with insightful case studies and judicious reviews of available research data and existing scholarly literature. The main theme is organized around the thesis that psychology is the study of the person and that the person is a unique composite of body, mind and consciousness. The goal of the person is self-realization. Self-realization consists in the realization of one’s true self as distinct from the manifest ego and it is facilitated by cultivating consciousness. Cultivating consciousness leads to a kind of psycho-spiritual symbiosis resulting in personal transformation, altruistic value orientation and flowering of the hidden human potential.

"Fuel Efficiency Improvement by Using Acetylene Powered Engine" explores the potential of acetylene as an alternative fuel to enhance engine efficiency and reduce emissions. Acetylene, produced from calcium carbide and water, offers cleaner combustion with lower carbon emissions. The book discusses engine modifications, safety measures, and dual-fuel strategies to optimize performance. Experimental results show improved fuel efficiency and extended runtime compared to petrol. While infrastructure and safety challenges exist, research into direct injection and HCCI techniques aims to overcome them. With continued development, acetylene could become a viable, sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, reducing environmental impact and fuel dependency.
