Black Ocean

In 1974, when Ntozake Shange first released the cannon of Black girl magic known as For colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf, her opening stanza was a call to all of us. “somebody / anybody sing a black girl's song bring her out to know herself …” This book is answer to that call. Anastacia-Reneé’s words frame so many questions: what is sacred, what is beauty, what is tragedy, what rites of passage have we endured to be initiated into the complexities of our humanity? These poems read like rituals, invoking ancestors and Becky alike in a nuanced honest reflection of this time in life. These poems are stories of blackness, of queerness, of womanhood, and of all the identities we hold externally and internally that create the tapestry of who we are and who we want to be.

Anastasia needs to be heard and to be taken seriously even if she doesn't dabble in 'shady' areas that usually get headlines. She's outspokenly pure and simple, honest yet powerful. Anastasia who goes through painful traumas at the hands of incompetent religious Managers uses her faith and self belief to come out triumphant and successful. She tells her tale steeped in Kenyan and African tradition, yet bound by Christian values. It is a book religious Managers who are Trainers must read alongside their Bibles! It offers insights for the average lay reader as well, exposing the religious 'fault lines' in this African 'rift valley'! This third book of the Author is truly an absorbing read.Trophy D'Souza, who has experience of dealing with people in different settings in life, has a way with words in dealing with dysfunctional situations. His first book, A Bumpy Ride, shows how 'incompetent Managers' can affect people's lives, very much the way Anastasia's 'bumpy ride' through uncharted terrains nearly crashes out at an 'intolerant- Management' obstacle. Similarly in his second book, The Singh Saga, he elaborates on how unsteady characters can disturb the 'managerial balance' that is required to make a family functional. Always concerned about a reader's possible emotional spill-over his books provide motivation and inspiration. His books also constantly seek to resolve, to 'redeem' and to heal as in Anastasia Redeemed.

I stand in front of the mirror as I remind myself that I dont have to wear the uniform anymore. I dont have to dress myself in mens attire. I can grow out my nails, and paint them with polish. I am finally free to have my ears pierced. I can speak in the voice that Ive spent so many hours cultivating with my speech therapist. I dont have to hide my disgust anymore at being called boet or sir. I no longer have to tolerate any references to my deadname. Anastacia has fought hard for her right to live, held back for decades by a body that didnt fit, and an identity that never belonged to her. At first, it had seemed impossible like transition was some romantic, impractical ideal that was incompatible with reality. But now, after five months of hormone therapy, countless sessions of painful laser hair removal, multiple appointments with doctors and psychologists, it is very much a reality. Born into a Jewish family in Johannesburg and raised by her parents as a boy, Anastacia Tomson was never sure just how much of her persistent internal discomfort to blame on an often troubled family life. She qualified and practised as a doctor, but it would take a great deal more clear-sighted and difficult questioning to finally find peace and self-acceptance, as a woman. This memoir is a clarion call for a more nuanced understanding of trans people and the concepts of sex, gender and identity.

The weakness of Brazil's black consciousness movement is commonly attributed to the fragility of Afro-Brazilian ethnic identity. In a major account, John Burdick challenges this view by revealing the many-layered reality of popular black consciousness and identity in an arena that is usually overlooked: that of popular Christianity.Blessed Anastacia describes how popular Christianity confronts everyday racism and contributes to the formation of racial identity. The author concludes that if organizers of the black consciousness movement were to recognize the profound racial meaning inherent in this area of popular religiosity, they might be more successful in bridging the gap with its poor and working-class constituency.

The Communicated Stereotype

The Communicated Stereotype

The Communicated Stereotype: From Celebrity Vilification to Everyday Talk argues that a consequential interactional dilemma is enacted when people communicate stereotypes in everyday talk. The interactional dilemma is a result of the tension between a political correctness movement that prescribes against the communication of stereotypes and the benefits gained from communicating these in conversation. Despite the punishment and shame that befalls celebrities who communicate stereotypes, people continue to communicate stereotypes in everyday conversation often evoking little if any outrage. The Communicated Stereotype advances previous theory and research related to group categorization, stereotype maintenance and functional, discourse analytic, and critical approaches by demonstrating the process whereby the vilification of celebrities diverts attention from the everyday communication of stereotypes and emboldens people to communicate stereotypes without self-criticism. The way this interactional dilemma is handled in conversation helps to explain why stereotypes are maintained over time within a culture despite deterrents intended to dissuade people from using them. An appreciation of stereotypes as poor communication choices provides the potential for the reduction of stereotype use.
