Er wird von den Nationalsozialisten drangsaliert und schlie lich 1938 verhaftet. Nach Protesten aus dem In- und Ausland kommt der inzwischen prominente Autor auf freien Fu , muss sich aber an strenge Auflagen halten; er w hlt den Weg der Inneren Emigration und bleibt in Deutschland. Erst nach dem Krieg geht er in die Schweiz. Am 24. August 1950 stirbt mit Ernst Wiechert einer der meistgelesenen Autoren seiner Zeit.
