Based on McLaughlin's Anson G. Phelps Lectures on Early American History delivered at New York University in 1932, this important study locates the principles of the United States Constitution in the political philosophy of colonial New England, Puritan practices and the ideals of English personal rights and limited government common to all of the colonies. Andrew C. McLaughlin 1861-1947] received bachelor degree and law degrees from the University of Michigan. He taught Latin and history at Michigan until 1906, when he joined the history faculty at the University of Chicago. McLaughlin served as department chair of history from 1906 to 1927, as professor until 1929 and as a professor emeritus from 1929 to 1936. Along with The Foundations of American Constitutionalism, his list of major works includes The Courts, The Constitution and Parties (1912), Steps in the Development of American Democracy (1920) and A Constitutional History of the United States (1935), which won a Pulitzer Prize in 1936. 176 pp.

This concise but comprehensive text provides a systematic account of the memory disorders, whether they result from psychological stress, traumatic injury, stroke, or degenerative disease of the brain. The major amnesia syndromes are covered in consistently organized chapters that give a clear description of the clinical signs and symptoms, predisposing factors, prevalence and prognosis, pathophysiology to the extent that it is known, diagnostic approaches including tests used to evaluate the disorders, and therapeutic efforts. The book's emphasis is on facts rather than theory, and readers from a variety of disciplines will appreciate its clear, jargon-free, well-organized assessment of the state of knowledge about the memory disorders. These disciplines include neurobiology, neuropsychology, psychiatry, cognitive neuroscience, rehabilitation medicine, and gerontology. Friedrich Schleiermacher (1768-1834) is best known as the "father of liberal Protestant theology," largely on the strength of his massive work of systematic theology, The Christian Faith. It is universally recognized that Schleiermacher grounded his theological work in an innovative and historically important understanding of religion in general, and that the influence of his thought about religion has extended beyond the boundaries of theology. In this book, Andrew Dole presents a new account of Schleiermacher's theory of religion. His purpose is to challenge a deeply entrenched tradition that characterizes Schleiermacher's account of religion is "subjective" or "individualistic." Dole argues that Schleiermacher integrates the individualistic side of religion with a set of claims about its social dynamics, and that this takes place within a broader understanding of all events in the world as the product of a universal, law-governed "causal nexus." Properly understood, says Dole, Schleiermacher's account of religion is an early and important example of a combination of theology and the "scientific" study of religion. By calling attention to this fact, Dole hopes to correct the historical record and stimulate interest in Schleiermacher's work outside the field of theological studies.
