It was three o'clock in the morning. Along a deserted pavement of Riverside Drive strode briskly a young man whose square-set shoulders and erect poise suggested a military training. His coat, thrown carelessly open to the cold night wind, displayed an expanse of white indicative of evening dress. As he walked his heels clicked sharply on the concrete with the forceful firm tread of the type which does things...
EC Regulation of Corporate Governance

EC Regulation of Corporate Governance

Andrew Johnston

Andrew Johnston examines EC regulation of national corporate governance systems through the lenses of economic theory and reflexive governance. By contrasting the normative demands of the neoclassical 'agency' model with those of the productive coalition model, he shows how their incompatibility required political compromise. Reflexive governance theory is then used to explain how progress has been possible. Through detailed analysis of both case law and positive regulation, the author highlights the move from positive to negative integration; the benefits as well as the limits of regulatory competition; and the significant role of reflexive techniques in both preventing market failure and enabling positive integration to proceed. The workable compromise that has emerged between market integration and continued regulatory diversity at national level demonstrates that procedural regulation can steer autonomous social subsystems towards greater responsibility and a better articulation of the public good.

Managing a software development project is a complex process. There are lots of deliverables to produce, standards and procedures to observe, plans and budgets to meet, and different people to manage. Project management doesn't just start and end with designing and building the system. Once you've specified, designed and built (or bought) the system it still needs to be properly tested, documented and settled into the live environment. This can seem like a maze to the inexperienced project manager, or even to the experienced project manager unused to a particular environment.A Hacker's Guide to Project Management acts as a guide through this maze. It's aimed specifically at those managing a project or leading a team for the first time, but it will also help more experienced managers who are either new to software development, or dealing with a new part of the software life-cycle. This book:describes the process of software development, how projects can fail and how to avoid those failures outlines the key skills of a good project manager, and provides practical advice on how to gain and deploy those skills takes the reader step-by-step through the main stages of the project, explaining what must be done, and what must be avoided at each stage suggests what to do if things start to go wrong! The book will also be useful to designers and architects, describing important design techniques, and discussing the important discipline of Software Architecture. This new edition: has been fully revised and updated to reflect current best practices in software development includes a range of different life-cycle models and new design techniques now uses the Unified Modelling Language throughout

Fired Up: Kindling and Keeping the Spark in Creatives Teams is a one-of-a-kind leadership book specifically designed to help leaders with their creative team members. From what began as a conversation with a friend, and manifested itself around the fire-pit in his backyard, Dr. Johnston uses the key components of fire to help us get our teams Fired Up to be more creative. Those elements are: Oxygen Fuel, and Heat; know as the three components of the "Fire Triangle." In this book, you'll see how each connect with leadership principles to help you become a better leader, and turn that spark of creativity into a well-maintained fire.OxygenOxygen lets a fire breathe. This first section of the book helps leaders put wind in people's sails and provide the physical and conceptual space they need to create. FuelFuel feeds a fire. The second section helps leaders stoke the flames and keep their teams from burning up or burning out in the consuming process of creation. HeatHeat ignites a fire. The final section helps leaders turn possibilities into reality by turning up the heat on motivation, quality, and direction. Dr. Andrew Johnston has made a life of leading teams and developing the people in them. As Associate Provost and Dean at Belmont University and a faculty member at Vanderbilt University, in Nashville, Tennessee, he led institutional change and prepared tomorrow's leaders. As a sought after consultant and coach for organizations in non-profit, corporate, and educational contexts, he strengthens the leaders of today. Dr. Johnston lives in Franklin, Tennessee, with his wife, Amy.

It's a bad start to one's career: Alone in a foreign country, broke, homeless, living on borrowed time with an expired visa. That was just the start of one teacher's sojourn through the People's Republic of China. It started in an enclave of the social elite, winding through isolated farming villages before concluding in a burgeoning financial center. And at each stop, a sea of friendly, smiling faces - the smile of a predator longing to tear off a piece for himself. This is the Middle Kingdom, a place where business is savage and nothing is free of its influence - not even education.

While some say it's not truly possible to be fat and healthy, it's quite easy to be skinny and sick. These days it's sadly all too simple. Follow a fad diet. Emulate reality weight-loss shows. Some of you may need to go no farther than your doctor's office and ask for a prescription. Drastic diets or intense exercise or even fancy injections and supplements can all make you thin. Yet they can never make you healthy. True health is never extreme. Merging simple with science and a generous supply of common sense, Spot On: Nutrition focuses on moderation--a concept widely forgotten in recent years. Or maybe it's just the idea that's been lost as "experts" inundate us with misinformation. It's time to become your own guru. This book will help you do just that. Author of Holistic Strength Training for Triathlon, Andrew is a former professional cyclist, the first Leukemia Survivor to qualify for and finish the Hawaii Ironman World Championships, the first Leukemia Survivor to win an Iron Distance Triathlon, and twice voted One of the Top Trainers in America by Men's Health. Don't believe him when he says he's "officially retired from competition." He's simply focusing most of his energy into various creative projects, including raising a son - his biggest feat yet Andrew also has several more books in the Spot On series nearing completion. So with a little luck (and maybe a shower sacrificed here and there), he'll get those other works published soon. His readers will then be able to combine the other Spot On subjects with optimal nutrition to enjoy the health that is their birthright.

"What do I strive to contribute through my passion and visions? I want to help make the world make a little more sense. I want to do work as a critic and journalist that helps increase the audience of work that deserves exposure and explain why it deserves exposure. And eventually I want to create artistic work of my own - in the form of fiction or essays - that, in its own way, does the same thing - work that illustrates connections, puts things in context and, ultimately, makes people realize that for all the insane bullshit that's going on out there (and has been going on out there since time immemorial), the world is really a pretty cool place." --AJ

Many people recognize that God is bigger than any one religion, but how can we fathom the Divine when the details of daily life seem to distract us? These reminders point us to the obvious yet mind-blowing truth that religion can only hint about, that God is fully present at all times, in all places, and in spite of any beliefs we hold.
