Dr. Andrew Turnbull And The New Smyrna Colony Of Florida
"Every old inhabitant of Florida knows of Andrew Turnbull.... Reminders of Turnbull are plentiful throughout the State. On the palm covered banks of the North Indian River stands New Smyrna itself, named for Smyrna, Asia Minor, the birthplace of Turnbull's wife." Spain yielded East and West Florida to England in exchange for Havana in 1763, but few Englishmen could be enticed to settle in this warm wilderness. Dr. Andrew Turnbull was an exceptional forty-eight-year-old London physician, who undertook this pioneer adventure with his Greek-born wife and family. Dr. Turnbull selected a site south of present-day Ormond and Daytona Beaches, anticipating a future settlement peopled by Greek settlers. To this end, Dr. Turnbull sailed to Greece, Italy, and Minorca, recruiting settlers for New Smyrna, and arrived in St. Augustine, Florida in November of 1767. The author opens with a brief look at the early colonization of Florida, relating Dr. Turnbull's pioneer efforts, and the founding of New Smyrna. Subjects covered include: the uprising of 1768; English financial support; hardships and illness; irrigation; governors: Grant, Moultrie and Tonyn; Moultrie, Turnbull and Drayton's secret flight to England to avoid seizure; the Revolution; cruelty and murder, the fall of New Smyrna, and the ultimate division of New Smyrna property. This work is enhanced with brief excerpts from letters, illustrations, a bibliography and a full-name plus subject index.(1919, ?), 2016, 51/2x81/2, paper, 232 pp
Dr. Andrew Turnbull and The New Smyrna Colony of Florida
This diary-like correspondence brings to life the dreams, efforts, and trials of Andrew Turnbull and the Smyrna colonists. When East Florida was ceded to England by Spain in 1763, Scottish physician, Dr. Andrew Turnbull, recruited over 1,400 Mediterranean colonists to establish the agricultural colony he named "Smyrn a."Carita Doggett recounts that not only did the growing conditions prove less than ideal but how seemingly every imaginable calamity befell the colony before it failed in 1777. This edition of Dr. Andrew Turnbull and The New Smyrna Colony of Florida includes dozens of letters between Andrew Turnbull and others involved with his Smyrn a venture. These documents, not available to Carita Doggett, were discovered in the tower of Ballindalloch Castle in Scotland where they had been archived for centuries.

This book examines VOX, the first major and electorally successful populist radical right-wing party to emerge in Spain since the death of General Franco, and the restoration of parliamentary democracy in the late 1970s.In December 2018, VOX, a new party on the populist radical right, entered the Andalusian regional parliament, and played the role of kingmaker in the ensuing government formation discussions. Since then, under the leadership of Santiago Abascal, VOX has earned political representation in numerous local, regional and national elections. The party attracted more than 3.6 million votes in the November 2019 general election, making VOX the third largest party in the Spanish Congress. In two years, the party has become a key political challenger and an important player in Spanish politics. This book explains the origins of the party, its ideology and relationship with democracy, its appeal with voters, and its similarities with (and differences from) other populist radical right parties in Europe. It draws upon a rich source of domestic as well as cross-national survey data and a systematic analysis of party manifestos which provide a detailed account of the rise of VOX and what its emergence means for Spanish politics. This volume will be of interest to scholars of comparative politics, political parties, voters and elections, Spanish politics, the populist radical right and populism in general.
