Andrzej Zulawski (1940–2016) was born in Lwów, Poland (now Lviv, Ukraine) and educated in Paris. From 1971 to 2015 he directed thirteen feature films. Andrzej Zulawski: Abject Cinema interprets the director’s oeuvre through the methodological lens of Julia Kristeva’s notions of the abject and the semiotic chora, with the narratives in Zulawski’s filmography amounting to an experience of the abject -being not merely the state of affairs among the films’ subjects but also of their collective regression to a semiotic non-verbal state divorced from the symbolic verbal-visual language employed by cinema as a whole. It further contextualizes this interpretation with the sociopolitical circumstances from which Zulawski emerged, specifically his Polish homeland occupied by various foreign powers, his emigre status in France, and the influence of the Polish Romantic movement.

Geralt's encounter with a beast reveals the truth behind fairy tales in this graphic novel adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski's original short story. Geralt takes a short cut down a beaten path, where he makes a grim discovery of two corpses. Backtracking their trail, he's led to a derelict mansion secured with elevated walls and a gate--mysterious and ramshackle, yet adorned with a rare elegance Geralt could not ignore. He is met with the mansion's owner--not quite human, but a beast with the faculties of a man. With Geralt unfazed by his monstrous appearance and displays of aggression, the beast invites him inside. A kind but wary host, he shares stories of his family, his life . . . and his curse. If the weight of his misdeeds could condemn him to the body of a beast--a retribution spoken of only in fairy tales, could there be another grain of truth in these tales of fantasy--one that could help him elude his fate and lead him to salvation? This graphic novel is the first in a series of adaptations from Sapkowski's acclaimed short story collection The Last Wish Script adaptation by Jacek Rembiś (Frostpunk) with art by Jonas Scharf (Bone Parish, War for the Planet of the Apes).

Sin manifests into bloodlust in this graphic novel adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski's original short story. Geralt pursues a proclamation from a king of a bloodthirsty monster plaguing his palace. A hefty reward is offered to cure the beast, but not to kill it, for the king holds a secret--what lies beneath the palace is beyond the spawn of evil. Tried and failed by charlatans, Geralt sets out to claim the bounty--by decree of the king or by the pleas of those who wish the creature dead. This graphic novel is the fourth in a series of adaptations from Sapkowski's acclaimed short story collection The Last Wish

The work of Andrzej Wajda, one of the world’s most important filmmakers, shows remarkable cohesion in spite of the wide ranging scope of his films, as this study of his complete output of feature films shows. Not only do his films address crucial historical, social and political issues; the complexity of his work is reinforced by the incorporation of the elements of major film and art movements. It is the reworking of these different elements by Wajda, as the author shows, which give his films their unique visual and aural qualities.

Andrzej Wróblewski
The paintings of Polish artist Andrzej Wróblewski fit into the realist art of the 20th century in an incomparable way. His portraits of people are characterized by a somber and cool color palette. The political mood in Poland after World War II had a significant influence on the artist’s oeuvre. Throughout his life, Wróblewski moved on the fringes of society; contemporaries described him as a “painter of a tragic generation.” This publication explores how his work was contextualized in exhibitions and how his themes were interpreted. How is a myth created around an artistic personality whose oeuvre is so closely intertwined with his tragic biography?

One of Poland's most important and independent postwar artists, Andrzej Wroblewski (1927-57) created in his short life his own highly individual, suggestive, and prolific form of abstract and figurative painting that continues to inspire artists today. This volume offers a stunning presentation and thorough reevaluation of his work and its legacy in the international context of art history. Offering an insightful picture of the world of postwar painting in communist Europe, and highlighting Wroblewski's political engagement, the book helps us to understand the immensely evocative vision of war and oppression that he created. This close look at a painter and a period that are of growing interest for international art historians will serve to further cement Wroblewski in the postwar pantheon.
