Menschen koennen ihren Alltag nicht ohne Informationsreduktionen bewaltigen. In den Sozialwissenschaften werden die Begriffe Stereotyp und Vorurteil verwendet, um Prozesse der Informationsverarbeitung zu beschreiben und zu analysieren. Jedoch werden Stereotyp und Vorurteil oft synonym gebraucht. In dieser Arbeit wird untersucht, welche Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede zwischen diesen beiden Begriffen bestehen. Die empirischen Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Autoritarismus ein Persoenlichkeitsfaktor ist, der vorhersagt, ob verwendete Vereinfachungen einfach nur harmlose Orientierungshilfen in einer komplexen Welt sind oder ob mit ihnen auch Abwertungen anderer Menschen verknupft sind. Ein zentrales Ergebnis der empirischen Analyse ist, dass nicht jede normativ negative Beschreibung anderer Menschen Ausdruck einer Diskriminierung sein muss, die zu generalisierter Auslanderablehnung fuhrt.
