Anita se trouva donc libre d'errer de longues heures sous les tilleuls. Le printemps arrivait, et avec lui se montraient les petites feuilles vert tendre, les oiseaux gazouilleurs, le doux soleil qui dorait les murs gris et les vieux troncs crevass s et faisait tinceler les vitres de l'orangerie. Ce b timent, situ au fond du jardin, tait depuis longtemps d chu de sa destination primitive. Des vitres manquaient, d'autres montraient de lamentables f lures. l'int rieur, c' tait un assemblage h t roclite d'objets hors d'usage. Sur une paroi, un rosier tendait ses branches d j garnies de petites pointes vertes.Anita, s' tant assur e que nul n'en prendrait ombrage, fit sa retraite de cette orangerie. Avec une tonnante adresse, elle sut lui donner un aspect bien rang et presque l gant. Les objets les plus laids, rel gu s dans un coin, se trouv rent peu pr s cach s par une vieille armoire aux massives ferrures, et tout ce qui avait encore quelque apparence fut dispos avec un go t inn , un sens artistique tr s remarquable chez une enfant et qui montrait bien en elle la fille de Bernhard Handen, le d licat, le po te qui n'avait pu trouver son id al dans la maison de ses savants anc tres. Et cette tendance h r ditaire se r v lait mieux encore dans les d tails: quelques fleurs baignant dans un vieux vase corn ou dans une coupe de cristal sans pied, des assiettes de fa ence choisies parmi les moins br ch es, quelques tableaux suspendus et l avec l'aide de Charlotte, trop heureuse, l'excellente femme, de voir l'enfant se distraire cette besogne...
