BODY IN THE BIN As the garbage dumpster is lifted into the air on the forklift, a body slams forward, purged from beneath the dirty depths of nightclub garbage like a phantom. Joe the Sanitation Engineer gawked in horror as the lifeless pasty face with spherical eyes, stared blankly back at him through the windshield of the garbage truck. He returned the bin to the ground with a loud clatter leaving a lifeless hand and shoeless foot piercing the air. He had worked this route for twenty years and had never seen the likes of this.Cold, hauntingly abysmal eyes would become the source of his nightmares. The blank uninhabited face branded into his mind. The dirty-gloved hand he slammed to his mouth successfully arrested the nausea that pushed upward, causing a sensational burning in his throat. Seconds later, he swept the same-gloved hand across his forehead leaving a dirty sweaty trail. Panic set in and he shivered. It was dark, and to make matters worse it was drizzling rain. When the newly elected Sheriff Jordan Hinkley is confronted with murder and the body is discovered in the garbage bin of the local nightclub, corruption in his usually quiet village develops into something much more sinister. He enrols the help of the old retired Sherriff Bulldog Dobson. Then PI Mac Jonson, ex-cop, rolls into town looking for a major embezzler and he is shocked to discover it is his quarry that was murdered. The conspiracy develops; blackmail is unravelled when undesirable photographs are discovered. The three unite to solve the murder and mayhem that erupts into prospects that are more dangerous when Katy Beal, the daughter of the local B&B where Mac is staying is kidnapped, and then the wife of the dead victim is murdered in her hospital bed.

She pulled the old moth-eaten rug over the plastic covered body then tucked it around but not without giving it the appearance of having been there for a decade, as the derelict cabin had been. Kicking enough dirt and leaves over the corpse to cover it she then piled the broken wooden boards that she previously removed to make room for the body on top, with a little imagination the scene looked a hundred years old again. The cobwebs, dust and undergrowth concealed the evidence. Not a soul had been in this old run down cabin since time began and lay abandoned, at the edge of the huge estate. No one ever came here. The house also stood abandoned on the Garrett Estate now owned by the local bank. Not even the Garrett's themselves came here, the once influential owners, she was dead and he had been murdered. The local bank had been in Peters' family for three generations and now Gerald Peters and his mother were the remaining owners of the bank and this Estate, he was in charge and so there was no need for anyone to come here and been abandoned on the spot. Such a disgusting place, who would want to come here, a perfect place to hide however, and a perfect place to hide a body, the only thing now was to cover the trail from the house to the shed. Pulling the old ivy and branches back in place where they had been growing for half a century, she covered the shed door then went back the way she came through the woods, with a forked branch she covered her tracks and the trail of the body she had dragged along there.More and more leaves would fall covering the trail already carpeting the floor of the forest. Then within a couple of days, they would start to become mush. However, it didn't really matter because no one ever came here.Getting close to the main trail, she looked back shining the flashlight on the trail behind her, not a sign. In fact, more leaves had already fallen. Perfect.

THE time had come for them to investigate further the boxes at Sarah's old house. There was nothing she could do about Lilly, sitting around moping only seemed to make the time go slower, and so decided life had to go on as normal as possible. Buxton's enquiries were pending and they were here to see about the smuggling.Having taken possession of the marital home after a sticky separation, she was a little shocked to say the least to discover that smuggling was actually taking place in the cellar of her house, and she felt exploited. Besides the fact, she was still trying to get over the body by the back door of her shop.Moving out of the cave and back to the tunnel, she left Mr. Buxton investigating the contraband further and wandered along the narrow passage. She could hear the ocean at the end. The tide was ebbing and the light of day shone up the cavity from the shoreline entrance at the bottom of the steep concrete cylinder that dropped off at the end of the tunnel. Peeking cautiously down the twenty-foot drop, a loud intake of breath and a gut wrenching scream emanated from somewhere deep inside her. Buxton arrived in seconds to where Sarah stood glaring down in horror at the body hanging inverted. Feet taped to the rungs of an embedded steel ladder, hands taped behind, head twisted in an anomalous position with the face buried in the sand, and the light ebbing waves sloshing about the head.

The question of the representation of women in the media has been an important one for feminists over the past three decades. This diverse collection of essays represents three major trends in feminist media studies: the liberal feminist perspective, which focuses on the media's tendency to misrepresent and oppress women; the postmodern perspective, which illustrates the ways in which women can participate in, enjoy, and sometimes subvert the dominant media; and the more recent attempts to identify and challenge the subtle backlash that threatens to obliterate feminist gains. The contributors cover a wide range of subjects, from advertisements for women's stockings to the life and death of Princess Diana.
Becoming an Architect in Renaissance Italy

Becoming an Architect in Renaissance Italy

Ann C. Huppert

A leading architect of the Italian Renaissance, Baldassarre Peruzzi (1481–1536) has, until now, been a little-known, enigmatic figure. A paucity of biographical documentation and a modest number of surviving buildings, coupled with an undeservedly critical assessment by Giorgio Vasari (1511–1574), have long cast Peruzzi’s career in shadow. With Becoming an Architect in Renaissance Italy, Ann C. Huppert taps into a known, but neglected resource—Peruzzi’s autograph drawings—and reveals the full scope and artistic mastery of Peruzzi’s work and its enduring influence. Extraordinary not only in their beauty and design inventiveness, but also in the varied representational techniques and practical mathematics noted within them, Peruzzi’s drawings record an evolving artistic process. Reassessing his architectural masterworks, Huppert also explores lesser-known work: his studies of Roman antiquity, realized paintings and unrealized buildings, as well as engineering projects. Huppert shows that Peruzzi anticipated modern representational methods and scientific approaches in architecture, and pinpoints the moment when architecture began to emerge as a profession distinct from the other arts.

The systems approach to the family is based on the assumptions that there is equality between men and women in the family, and that women and men are treated equally in clinical practice. The contributors to this book challenge these hidden assumptions, discussing the issues from both a conceptual and clinical viewpoint. They argue strongly that qu

Greek Art and the Orient

Greek Art and the Orient

Ann C. Gunter

For over a century, scholars have recognized an 'orientalizing period' in the history of early Greek art, in which Greek artisans fashioned works of art under the stimulus of Near Eastern imports or resident foreign artisans. Previous studies have emphasized the role of Greek and Phoenician traders in bringing about these contacts with the civilizations of the ancient Near East and Egypt, debating their duration or intensity in the Greek world. In this study, Ann Gunter interrogates the categories of 'Greek' and 'Oriental' as problematic and shifts emphasis to modes of contact and cultural transfers within a broader regional setting. Her provocative study places Greek encounters with the Near East and Egypt in the context of the Neo-Assyrian Empire, which by the 8th and 7th centuries BCE extended from southern Turkey to western Iran. Using an expanded array of archaeological and textual sources, she argues that crucial aspects of the identity and meaning of foreign works of art were constructed through circumstances of transfer, ownership and display.

Robert Louis Stevenson and the Colonial Imagination

Robert Louis Stevenson and the Colonial Imagination

Ann C. Colley

Ashgate Publishing Limited

In her distinguished and hauntingly rendered book, Ann C. Colley provides a fresh insight into Stevenson's multi-voiced South Seas fiction, as well as into the particulars and complications of living within a newly established site of Empire. Bringing to light information from the archives of the London Missionary Society and from other sources, such as the Royal Geographical Society (London), the Writers' Museum (Edinburgh), the Beinecke Library (Yale University), and the Huntington Library (San Marino, California), Colley examines the intricate nature of Robert Louis Stevenson's relation to imperialism. In particular, she investigates Stevenson's complex relationship to the missionary culture that surrounded him during the last six years of his life (1888-1894), revealing hitherto unscouted routes by which to understand Stevenson's experiences while he was cruising among the South Sea islands, and later while he was a resident colonial in Samoa. Beginning with a history of the missionaries in the Pacific that reveals Stevenson's criticism of, yet ultimate support for, their work, and demonstrates how these attitudes helped shape his South Sea fiction, Robert Louis Stevenson and the Colonial Imagination constitutes a major work of reconstruction from archival sources. Subsequent chapters focus on Stevenson's struggles with personal and cultural identity in the South Seas, and his interest in photography, panoramas, and magic lantern shows, revealing Stevenson's sensitivity to the ways light plays upon darkness to create meaning. In addition, Stevenson's serious commitment to political issues and his thoughts about power and nationhood are explored. Finally, Stevenson's recollections of his childhood are engaged not only to suggest an unacknowledged source (the juvenile missionary magazines) for A Child's Garden of Verses, but also to illuminate the generous reach of his imagination that exceeds the formulae of the missionary culture and the boundaries of the colonial construct.

In today's increasingly globalized world, it is essential that people of diverse ethnicities and socio-economic backgrounds learn to work together and communicate effectively. This book offers a breakthrough approach to recognizing that differences among people are resources for organizations to tap as they strive to anticipate change and adapt rapidly in an unpredictable world. "Catalytic Conversations" provides a conceptual framework for understanding how complex communication patterns of social networks influence, and are influenced by, organizational structures. It discusses how to enhance the quality and viability of groups and organizational life by paying attention to how people talk - and do not talk - to each other. The book distinguishes between conversations that support organizational enhancement and others that inhibit innovation, and explores the complexity of organizational communication in detail.

Saints, Clergy and Other Religious Figures on Film and Television, 1895-2003
The portrayal of clergy, saints, missionaries, monks, and other spiritual leaders dates back to the very beginnings of motion pictures and television. Over the years, filmmakers have portrayed religious figures as heroes and villains, sinners and saints, and nearly everything in between. Through their works, filmmakers have influenced how society viewed these religious figures and, by extension, religion itself. This work details over 900 films and television series made from the 1890s through 2003 in which a religious figure plays a prominent or recurring role, or in which a character poses as a religious figure. For each motion picture, full filmographic data are provided--including title, studio, running time, year of release, director, producer, writer, and cast--along with a synopsis focusing on the role of the religious figure. Television series are covered in a separate section. For each show, the entry includes the title under which the show was commonly known; the original broadcast network; the years the show ran, running time, and cast; and a brief discussion of the religious character's role in the overall series. Extensively indexed.
