Into the Forest and Down the Tower
It's time for Samantha's summer visit again. Both she and Val are anxious to see if they will take another magical journey through the mirror. After learning of a problem with one of the horses, Odette makes her appearance and tells the girls it's up to them to help him. What Charlie needs is something that can only be found in their magical land. It can't be given to them; they have to solve riddles and discover the answers themselves. A family of elves guides them, but even elf powers are limited when it comes to what stands between the girls and what they seek. Trolls and unicorns were everything they imagined and more, but rescuing Rapunzel from her tower was an added bonus they never saw coming.
Off to Camp and Discovering Art
Valerie and Samantha are disappointed that their schedules were not allowing them to spend a week together this summer like they have done every year since they were young. Their parents are able to plan a weekend camping trip towards the end of summer. The girls are happy for the visit, but sad to think they can't go through the mirror this year on another adventure. They discover the magic is not only within the mirror, but within themselves when they are together. Merlin the magician shows up to take them on their quest to help Arthur find his true identity and his place in Camelot.
Soaring Up to the Clouds, Not Knowing Jack
Valerie and Samantha's journey begins before they even make it to Val's farm this summer. When their families meet up at a festival, a hot air balloon ride takes them high into the clouds where surprises of Giant proportions await them. With the help of old and new friends, they return to a familiar kingdom and time to once again rescue Snow. This time from the evil queen's second attempt at killing her.
Past the Fields, Where All is Golden
With Samantha's little brother Joshua along, the girls didn't think they'd get to go on an adventure this summer. They could not have been more wrong. Josh disappears mysteriously into the cornfield while on his pony ride. Marcus, happy to finally be allowed to reveal himself to Val and Sam, informs them that Josh has been taken to another realm. It's now up to them to find a treasure in exchange for his safe return home. With help from a new friend, they follow secret caves and tunnels, and even discover the city of gold. But they learn that is not the greatest treasure of all.
At the Museum with Wandering Eyes
Valerie and Samantha are looking forward to a day of fun at the Science Museum in St. Paul, playing with gadgets and doing science projects in the lab. What they don't expect are the gnomes, Marcus and Michael, showing up again and sending them on a wild scavenger hunt through time. Meeting interesting people from history, discovering new musical instruments, ancient healing devices, and even a torture chamber are a part of their oddest adventure yet. So is Val's big brother, Darrell, who shows up to help just when he's needed most. Collecting a series of items - all with intriguing symbols - during this adventure is one thing; what their choice will be to do with them at the end of the hunt is another altogether.
Through the Mirror and into Snow
When best friends Valerie and Samantha discover a magic mirror in Val's 100-year-old barn in southern Minnesota, they eagerly go through it. Immediately they run into the young Snow White, who has just escaped the huntsman. The girls vow to help her find her father, knowing the dangers that await. On their journey, the fun-loving double-trouble duo quickly discovers they are caught up in the middle of their favorite fairy tales. Having the knowledge of the stories as their only weapon, Val and Sam help two other princesses, make a surprising friend, and discover they have a fairy godmother of their very own.
Overboard and Out of This Realm
A quick stop at a Barnes & Noble takes Val and Sam on another unexpected journey. They are once again whisked away with no warning. This time, they find themselves stranded on a pirate ship. Grateful to be rescued by Captain Nemo and his crew of the Nautilus, they are delivered to the Greek god, Poseidon. He's lost something and needs them to unravel the secret of their pendants to find it. Mythical creatures, hidden caves, a civilization believed to be only a legend, and the accidental discovery of Pandora's Box along the way makes this their most amazing adventure yet!

In an Influential Fashion profiles 164 fashion designers and retailers from many countries who have had the most impact on American dress and culture from the late 19th century to the year 2000. Each entry introduces a fashion personality or retailer whose influence on the industry reflected societal, political, and/or economic change. The commercial side of fashion, neglected in most fashion encyclopedias, is explored here, with details of licensing agreements and marketing innovations not easily found elsewhere. Students and professionals in fashion design, retailing, costume research, and social history will all find this book a valuable addition to their libraries. Each entry includes the birth and death dates of designers, their education and training, career highlights and accomplishments, and awards they have won. The entry describes the designer or retailer's signature styles, with a keen emphasis on the designer's contributions to American fashion design and culture. As appropriate, the entry summarizes any licensing agreements and influential marketing innovations. Web sites, lists of museums and fashion design schools, and numerous appendices make In an Influential Fashion a complete resource on American fashion history for the late 19th and 20th centuries.

Software Performability: From Concepts to Applications

Software Performability: From Concepts to Applications

Computers are currently used in a variety of critical applications, including systems for nuclear reactor control, flight control (both aircraft and spacecraft), and air traffic control. Moreover, experience has shown that the dependability of such systems is particularly sensitive to that of its software components, both the system software of the embedded computers and the application software they support. Software Performability: From Concepts to Applications addresses the construction and solution of analytic performability models for critical-application software. The book includes a review of general performability concepts along with notions which are peculiar to software performability. Since fault tolerance is widely recognized as a viable means for improving the dependability of computer system (beyond what can be achieved by fault prevention), the examples considered are fault-tolerant software systems that incorporate particular methods of design diversity and fault recovery. Software Performability: From Concepts to Applications will be of direct benefit to both practitioners and researchers in the area of performance and dependability evaluation, fault-tolerant computing, and dependable systems for critical applications. For practitioners, it supplies a basis for defining combined performance-dependability criteria (in the form of objective functions) that can be used to enhance the performability (performance/dependability) of existing software designs. For those with research interests in model-based evaluation, the book provides an analytic framework and a variety of performability modeling examples in an application context of recognized importance. The material contained in this book will both stimulate future research on related topics and, for teaching purposes, serve as a reference text in courses on computer system evaluation, fault-tolerant computing, and dependable high-performancecomputer systems.
Disenchantment, Skepticism, and the Early Modern Novel in Spain and France
This volume examines five early modern novels from the seventeenth century in Spain and France as examples of literature as a form of skeptical inquiry: Cervantes’s Don Quijote, Zayas’s Desengaños amorosos, Scarron’s Roman comique, Cyrano de Bergerac’s L’Autre Monde, and Mme. de Lafayette’s Zayde. These early modern novels encourage readers to take a critical stance toward accepted beliefs, through content that stages multiple encounters with the shockingly unfamiliar as well as through experiments in literary form, especially the interpolated story. At its broadest reach, this study asserts the fundamental value of literature as a means of encouraging discernment, recognizing the illusory, and honing critical acuity. In terms of the particularity of the historical moment, the volume also identifies the early modern novel as uniquely able to represent the conflicting value spheres of early modernity because of its ability to present multiple voices and its fascination with conflicting vantage points.Due to its interdisciplinary nature, Disenchantment, Skepticism, and the Early Modern Novel in Spain and France appeals to literary scholars and intellectual historians of the early modern period in Europe, as well as to advanced undergraduates and postgraduates studying the early novel, intellectual history, and philosophy of literature.
