Electronic Excitations at Metal Surfaces

Electronic Excitations at Metal Surfaces

Ansgar Liebsch

Kluwer Academic/Plenum Publishers
1997
sidottu
In this new work, the focus is on the dynamical response of metal electrons to several types of incident electromagnetic fields. The author, an eminent theorist, discusses Time-Dependent Local Density Approximation's importance in both elucidating electronic surface excitations and describing the ground state properties of electronic systems. Chapters detail theoretical formulations and computational procedures, covering such areas as single-particle and collective modes, spatial distribution of the induced surface charges, and local electric fields. Excitation spectra are shown for a variety of clean simple metals, noble metals, chemisorbed overlayers, charged surfaces, and small metal particles.

Ansgar, Rimbert and the Forged Foundations of Hamburg-Bremen
Ansgar and Rimbert, ninth-century bishops and missionaries to Denmark and Sweden, are fixtures of medieval ecclesiastical history. Rare is the survey that does not pause to mention their work among the pagan peoples of the North and their foundation of an archdiocese centered at Hamburg and Bremen. But Ansgar and Rimbert were also clever forgers who wove a complex tapestry of myths and half-truths about themselves and their mission. They worked with the tacit approval-if not the outright cooperation-of kings and popes to craft a fictional account of Ansgar's life and work. The true story, very different from that found in our history books, has never been told: Ansgar did not found any archdiocese at all. Rather, the idea of Hamburg-Bremen only took root in the tenth century, and royal sponsorship of the mission to Denmark and Sweden ended with the death of Louis the Pious. This book couples detailed philological and diplomatic analysis with broader historical contextualization to overturn the consensus view on the basic reliability of the foundation documents and Rimbert's Vita Anskarii. By revising our understanding of Carolingian northeastern expansion after Charlemagne, it provides new insight into the political and ecclesiastical history of early medieval Europe.

Cynicism

Cynicism

A short history of cynicism, from the fearless speech of the ancient Greeks to the jaded negativity of the present.Everyone's a cynic, yet few will admit it. Today's cynics excuse themselves half-heartedly—“I hate to be a cynic, but..."—before making their pronouncements. Narrowly opportunistic, always on the take, contemporary cynicism has nothing positive to contribute. The Cynicism of the ancient Greeks, however, was very different. This Cynicism was a marginal philosophy practiced by a small band of eccentrics. Bold and shameless, it was committed to transforming the values on which civilization depends. In this volume of the MIT Press Essential Knowledge series, Ansgar Allen charts the long history of cynicism, from the “fearless speech” of Greek Cynics in the fourth century BCE to the contemporary cynic's lack of social and political convictions.Allen describes ancient Cynicism as an improvised philosophy and a way of life disposed to scandalize contemporaries, subjecting their cultural commitments to derision. He chronicles the subsequent “purification” of Cynicism by the Stoics; Renaissance and Enlightenment appropriations of Cynicism, drawing on the writings of Shakespeare, Rabelais, Rousseau, de Sade, and others; and the transition from Cynicism (the philosophy) to cynicism (the modern attitude), exploring contemporary cynicism from the perspectives of its leftist, liberal, and conservative critics. Finally, he considers the possibility of a radical cynicism that admits and affirms the danger it poses to contemporary society.

How Did Jesus Want the Eucharist?

"This book by Ansgar Wucherpfennig is a welcome and refreshing resource for anybody interested in learning more about not only the origins of the Eucharist but also what early Christian communities witnessed to in their own reception and practice of the Lord's Supper…. This small book will be challenging for some, affirming for others, yet enlightening for all. And the questions and topics it inspires for discussion will surely deepen every reader's appreciation for the history and lived practice of the Eucharist." —from the foreword At the last supper with his disciples, Jesus thought more about life than about death. For him, the focus was on the meal, the eating together—not atonement. Correspondingly, in the early days of Christianity people met for feasts in which they experienced the presence of the Risen One.These celebrations had different forms and yet were connected in unity. This book shows that the role of women, ministry, and ecumenism in the Eucharist must be rethought. Ansgar Wucherpfennig, SJ, is a German Roman Catholic priest, theologian, and New Testament scholar. He is coeditor of the Frankfurt Theological Studies, member of the working group of Catholic New Testament Students (AKN), the working group for Theology and Spirituality (AGTS), the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL) and the Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas (SNTS). †

The Strategy Activation Canvas is the new standard for accelerating strategies – beginning where classical strategies end: with its activation. While many management and business canvases focus on developing a strategy, the Strategy Activation Canvas helps leaders and decision-makers to bring strategies to life. This book demonstrates for the first time how entire organizations can be “activated”: how people can not only perceive and implement a new strategy, but how entire organizations can be heavily involved in its making, how strategies are made visible and experienced, and how people can play an active and sustaining role throughout bringing a strategy to life. With their decades of experience in large scale organizations, Thiessen and Wreschniok pair their knowledge with case studies from Allianz, Baloise, E.ON, Hamburg Commercial Bank, Microsoft, NORD/LB, Swisscom or Swiss Re, organizations led by leaders who have significantly accelerated the success and value of their strategies through strategy activation. This book is an essential resource for managers who have responsibility for strategic initiatives and transformation programs of any kind.
Benign Violence: Education in and beyond the Age of Reason
Education is a violent act, yet this violence is concealed by its good intent. Education presents itself as a distinctly improving, enabling practice. Even its most radical critics assume that education is, at core, an incontestable social good.Setting education in its political context, this book, now in paperback, offers a history of good intentions, ranging from the birth of modern schooling and modern examination, to the rise (and fall) of meritocracy. In challenging all that is well-intentioned in education, it reveals how our educational commitments are always underwritten by violence. Our highest ideals have the lowest origins.Seeking to unsettle a settled conscience, Benign Violence: Education in and beyond the Age of Reason is designed to disturb the reader. Education constitutes us as subjects; we owe our existence to its violent inscriptions. Those who refuse or rebel against our educational present must begin by objecting to the subjects we have become.
