Berg: Violin Concerto

Berg: Violin Concerto

Anthony Pople

Cambridge University Press
1991
nidottu
Described by Aaron Copland as ‘among the finest creations in the modern repertoire’, Alban Berg’s Violin Concerto has become a twentieth-century classic. In this authoritative and highly readable guide to the work the reader is introduced not only to the concerto itself but to all that surrounded and determined its composition. This is a book about musical culture in the 1930s, about the Second Viennese School, about tonality, atonality and serialism, about Berg’s own musical development, compositional method and the private significance the Violin Concerto held for him. The book describes the genesis of the work, its performance history and critical reception and, in two detailed musical chapters, provides a section-by-section account of the book and a closer analysis of the musical language and structure. Anthony Pople’s ability to combine musical anecdote with scholarly discussion makes this guide compelling reading for the amateur and the specialist alike.

The Quatuor pour la fin du temps (Quartet for the End of Time) is among the best-known compositions by Olivier Messiaen (1908–92). Like virtually all of his works, it combines the striking technical achievement of Messiaen’s rich and attractive musical style with a deeply felt theological inspiration - in this case from the apocalyptic events described in the Book of Revelation, leading to the end of Time itself. Composed while Messiaen was a prisoner-of-war and premiered under extraordinary conditions in Stalag VIIIA in 1941, the work retains a powerful immediacy that has made it a favourite of performers and audiences alike. Anthony Pople’s book provides an introduction to Messiaen’s style through an examination of this great work, showing how it came to be composed and giving an in-depth assessment of each of its eight movements.

Unexpected calamity struck Grand Valley State University's campus on October 4, 2011, when Shane Peoples Welch tragically passed away at the age of twenty-one, while playing an innocent game of pickup basketball with friends. He was pronounced dead at the scene due to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a condition causing a thickening of the heart muscle and smaller heart chambers to pump blood. Shane was a scholar, graduating in the top ten percentile of Saginaw High School, Class of 2008 and was preparing to graduate with his Bachelors in Public Administration from the College of Community and Public Administration at Grand Valley State University. Shane was a leader. He was a founding member of Minorities Interested in Business; the first minority operated organization to be affiliated with the Seidman Business School. Shane was a friend. He played a major role in the making of B.L.A.C.K (Black Leaders Aspiring for Critical Knowledge), which served as a brotherhood for black men on campus. Many friends cherished his counsel and ability to listen effectively with no judgment. This collection of original poems and organic memories was curated in honor of the legacy that Shane left in the lives of those he touched. To celebrate his passing, his family and friends want to share his impact with the world. To some Shane was just a boy, but to his family and friends, he is a legend.

Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. Chosen Peoples

Chosen Peoples

Anthony D. Smith

Oxford University Press
2003
sidottu
'Unto thy seed I have given this land.' From the moment of God's covenant with Abraham in the Old Testament, the idea that a people are chosen by God has had a central role in shaping national identity. Chosen Peoples argues powerfully that sacred belief remains central to national identity, even in an increasingly secular, globalized modern world. In this important new study, Anthony D. Smith goes in search of the deep Judeo-Christian roots of the many manifestations of national identity. This rich and timely contribution to current debates about nationalism explains the complex historical reasons behind often violent modern conflicts around issues of land, culture, religion, and politics. Tracing the development of individual nations over many centuries, it offers fascinating insights into the religious and cultural foundations of countries such as Great Britain, the United States, Israel, France, and Germany. The argument draws on a wide range of examples from historic landscapes in Ireland, Switzerland and Egypt, myths of Arthurian Britain, Holy Russia, and Byzantium, through memories of a 'Golden Age', to the modern commemoration of the 'Glorious Dead', and of victims of war.

In 1874, John Richard Green, a virtually unknown former clergyman, sold the rights for his school textbook, A Short History of the English People, to Macmillan for 350 pounds sterling, a generous sum for a work expected to sell a few thousand copies. To everyone's astonishment, the work sold 32,000 copies in its first year, and a half million copies thereafter. This publishing phenomenon was also a breakthrough in historiography, for unlike earlier histories, which focused on kings and statesmen, Green's work revolved around the common people, their creative energy, and their devotion to self-government. Thus, Green was a critical figure in the transition from the writing of history of elites to a broader history of social and cultural change. He was also one of the last great amateurs at a time when the field was coming to be dominated by academic specialists. By providing an examination of Green's career, this book illuminates a critical juncture in the history of the discipline.

People Where They Are

People Where They Are

Anthony Clarvoe

"In the spring of 1955, much of the Southern U S was a simmering kettle of racial segregation, civil rights repression, and worker/workplace abuses-one that was on the verge of boiling over into a full scale struggle against those economic and civil rights injustices. With that time and atmosphere of conflict as a starting point, playwright Anthony Clarvoe has focused in on the rural Grundy County of 1955 Tennessee and the organization known then as the Highlander Folk School for his new play, PEOPLE WHERE THEY ARE, currently getting its world premiere at Clarence Brown Theatre's Carousel Theatre. While the story of Highlander and its goals of educating and agitating for change may be an unfamiliar or misunderstood one among today's audience, Clarvoe has succeeded with a superbly compelling narrative that reveals and explains. Most importantly, he draws important parallels between the racial and socio-economic struggles of the 1950s and 60s and similar issues that face contemporary American society such as immigration, voter suppression, and LGBTQ rights. The storyline of PEOPLE WHERE THEY ARE IS constructed around an educational session at the Highlander Folk School in the pre-Montgomery bus boycott days of 1955, involving four invited, outsider 'students' along with the group leader, Mrs Clark and a helper, Mr Carawan. Note: Clark and Carawan are based on the real-life Septima Clark and musician Guy Carawan] The visitors are May, a mountain housewife turned labor organizer; Emma (Brenda Orellana), a Mexican-American suffering from ethnic and class abuse; Ned, a compromised white man from the Atlanta office of the CIO; and John, a northern black man who presents himself initially as the son of a minister. As their session moves into a second day, personal stories begin to flow and character complexities emerge allowing each actor to paint a portrayal that not only reveals their character, but ties in subject matter relevant to an audience in 2019.... While I rarely make such a direct and obvious recommendation, I am suggesting that all theatre-goers place PEOPLE WHERE THEY ARE on their must-go list... This is brilliant theatre..."Alan Sherrod, ArtsKnoxville

The phone call begins before we touch a phone. It begins before the prospect lands on a vehicle. Before we write up a prospect and before the prospect leaves. At the point when the prospect first eyeballs a vehicle on our lot, finds his strength to pull off the roadway, builds up his courage to approach a window sticker, this is when we start our phone call. It begins within our introduction. We plant seeds before we sow them. It is during the handshake that the prospect's walls are strongest. They come up to us, or we approach them, and they have their preconceived thoughts of what we are about to do. It is this time when we need to begin to plan where we will be at the end of this deal. Hopefully, we plan to become a friend. We want to know our new friend and sell him every car he will ever buy. We want him to rely on us for his automotive needs. There is no point in selling him only one car. Our relationship will begin with us giving ground to get ground.
