This book explores the anxious and unstable relationship between court poetry and various forms of authority, political and cultural, in England and Scotland at the beginning of the sixteenth century. Through poems by Skelton, Dunbar, Douglas, Hawes, Lyndsay and Barclay, it examines the paths by which court poetry and its narrators seek multiple forms of legitimation: from royal and institutional sources, but also in the media of script and print. The book is the first for some time to treat English and Scottish material of its period together, and responds to European literary contexts, the dialogue between vernacular and Latin matter, and current critical theory. In so doing it claims that public and occasional writing evokes a counter-discourse in the secrecies and subversions of medieval love-fictions. The result is a poetry that queries and at times cancels the very authority to speak that it so proudly promotes.

I'm never going to take the crown from Allan Carr for writing a practical book about quitting smoking so I've written my own, consisting of cold facts, personal memories, home-spun philosophies and hard life experience. I don't mean just as long as you're physically holding the book in your hands and lifting the words from the page with your eyes, even if you read a little, a few pages, then put it down and go off and do something else and then come back to it again. No. As long as there's a relationship between you and the contents of this book, you won't smoke. Is that a deal? Just remember: there's no dignity in slavery. If you want dignity - you've got to be emancipated.

This book investigates the influence of test taker characteristics on performance in tests of English as a foreign language by exploring the relationships between these two groups of variables. The volume is based upon Antony Kunnan's doctoral dissertation completed at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1991, which later received the TOEFL Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation research award given by Educational Testing Service (ETS). Data from a test taker questionnaire and performance on the First Certificate in English (FCE) and the Test of ENglish as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) were used for the study. The research was conducted in a construct validation context and aimed to increase our understanding of the individual differences among test takers that influence their test performance.Key features of the volume include: - an introduction to construct validation activity and the role of modeling within this - presentation of theoretical models of language test performance and of second language acquisition (SLA), with an examination of relevant empirical studies - a comprehensive description of the structural modeling study conducted, including instrumentation and analyses - detailed discussion of the results and conclusions, and their implications, including further research. The application of a structural modeling approach to investigate the influence of test taker characteristics on test performance makes this study a valuable contribution to language testing research. As such, it will be of considerable relevance to academic researchers and graduate students in the field of language testing and assessment, as well as to others interested in second language acquisition and learning.
