Pirun portaat on Mauri Sariola -seura ry:n jäsenistön toimesta syntynyt jatkojännäri. Dekkarin murha tapahtuu aidossa Mauri Sariola -ympäristössä. Sariolan huvilan takana kohoaa pystysuora kallio, johon kirjailija itse rakensi yhden kesän aikana puiset portaat. Kirjan nimeksi tuli murhaa tutkivan poliisin repliikki. Portaitten jäänteet ovat vielä näkyvissä, mutta kulkukelpoiset ne eivät ole. Pirun portaat on ensimmäinen kirja, johon Maurin puoliso Tuula Sariola on itse ja omalla nimellään kirjoittanut jakson. Tuula kuvaa todellisia Mauri Sariolan aikaisia tapahtumia osittain ensimmäistä kertaa painetussa muodossa. Mauri kuoli vain 60 -vuotiaana ja vaistosi tämän lähtiessään viimeistä kertaa Sammatin huvilalta. Pääosin kirja on mielikuvituksen tuote, mutta mukana on tunnistettavia paikkoja ja henkilöitäkin. Tuula Sariola on itse myös yksi kirjan henkilöistä omalla nimellään. Kirjan tapahtumissa on hyvät dekkarin ainekset yllättävää loppua myöten. Samalla siinä on kulttuuriarvoa Mauri Sariolan ajan ja hänelle rakkaan ympäristön kuvauksena.
