On May 31st 2007, Arlene Walsh was killed in a car accident in a remote area of northeast New Mexico. She was 71-years-old. At the time of her death, she had been a semi-retired kindergarten teacher, student pilot, and the president of her local chapter of the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association). She had also helped found a local chapter of the Ninety-Nines, the International Organization of Woman Pilots in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she lived. She left behind three grown children, four grandchildren, two cats, two pet snakes, and a half-built biplane that had been under construction bit-by-bit for years. She also left behind a manuscript for a book on which she had been working, The Sky's The Limit, about being an older woman fulfilling her dream of learning to fly. The Sky's The Limit was not only incomplete but also in very rough draft form. It was not the only manuscript that Arlene left behind either. Arlene's Book is a compilation of the The Sky's The limit with two earlier, more complete manuscripts that she wrote about different parts of her life. Pot Roast on the Ceiling is a series of remembrances of her girlhood in Connecticut, and Door to the Rainbow chronicles one year of her life teaching in a one-room schoolhouse in rural New Mexico. Together, these three manuscripts form a memoir of an independently-minded, talented woman who passionately followed her dreams.

This 90-day intention setting workbook was prayerfully and thoughtfully designed to meet you wherever you are- mentally and spiritually- every morning for 90 days. Why intention setting? Every morning.Without clear direction and focus you are bound to become lost, overwhelmed and distracted.Ditch the formalities and S.M.A.R.T goal setting strategies- well save them for the BONUS goal-slaying section of the workbook and focus on your desired outcome for each day. How do you want to show up in the world, regardless of what challenge, obstacle or win comes your way each day? Key words: How do YOU want to show up? Intention setting is about purposefully making a promise to yourself. A pledge to intentionally focus on your wants, needs and desires. No, it's not selfish. Intention setting allows you to deliberately show up for yourself and others, in a manner that feeds your heart and soul. You will be better prepared to handle whatever comes your way from day to day.So, will you commit to taking a few minutes every morning to create the life that your heart and soul earnestly desire? This should be considered sacred time to stay connected with your Creator, your core values, and yourself. It shouldn't be forced or burdensome. At first it may feel slightly awkward because many of us are so accustomed to rolling out of bed and hitting the floor running "I need to do this and that, the kids need this and that, the dog or cat needs this or that"- the "things to do" list (mentally or written) becomes the priority without first checking in with self. How is my heart this morning? What is my mood this morning? What energy do I want to bring into the world today? How do I want to feel at the end of the day?Pause. Slow down. Today, I will...Let's go Get your workbook and begin this life-changing mindfulness practice. "Change your thoughts, change your words, change your actions, and change your life." - Arlene Vassell

Eighty percent of children learn to figure out the complex reading puzzle for themselves, regardless of the teacher's methodology, just as they learned to talk. However, it takes them longer to become proficient readers without a writing workshop. And what about the remaining 20%? They are dependent on the teacher's methodology. These children need individual, developmentally appropriate guidance by a knowledgeable emergent literacy teacher during their process of writing to prevent them from struggling with reading the rest of their lives. Writing workshop conferences provide the teacher and student a time for this individual guidance. In her book, Helping Children Become Readers Through Writing, and her supplementing video by the same name (available on You Tube), Arlene C. Schulze, master reading teacher and specialist explains and shows kindergarten teachers and administrators how and why young children, especially those making their first foray into formal education, become writers and readers through a workshop approach based on the research of Donald Graves and Marie Clay. Keeping in mind the limitations of a kindergarten teacher's time, the author has provided evidence-based research and the best classroom practices you need to implement writing workshop in your classroom. Chapters are rich with student writing samples and offer the following resources: * A daily kindergarten schedule to help you plan a comprehensive literacy program that includes writing and reading workshops and read-alouds * A description of the stages of kindergartner's written language and spelling development to help you plan appropriate instruction that improves the quality of students' writing * Outlines and lesson plans to help you and your students get ready for writing workshop and to familiarize you with writing workshop components * Writing workshop minilessons to help you construct your own based on students' needs * Tools to help you assess, evaluate, and report on students' progress Plus, the appendixes offer a wealth of information to supplement your instruction such as phonemic awareness activities, high frequency words and word family teaching suggestions, recommended booklists, reproducible forms for letters to parents and assessment checklists and rubrics. Although this book focuses primarily on kindergarten students, it is also appropriate for preschoolers, first and second graders, and often for struggling readers. Use this book to help your emergent writers and readers to become early writers and readers.
