All living matter is comprised of cells, small compartments isolated from the environment by a cell membrane and filled with concentrated solutions of various organic and inorganic compounds. Some organisms are single-cell, where all life functions are performed by that cell. Others have groups of cells, or entire organs, specializing in one particular function. The survival of the entire organism depends on all of its cells and organs fulfilling their roles. While the cells are studied by different sciences, they are seen differently by biologists, chemists, or physicists. Biologists concentrate their attention on cell structure and function. What does the cell consist of? Where are its organelles? What function does each organelle fulfil? From a chemists' point of view, a cell is a complex chemical reaction chamber where various molecules are synthesized or degraded. The main question is how these, sometimes very complicated chains of reactions are controlled. Finally, from a physics standpoint, one of the main questions is the physical movement of all these molecules between organelles within the cell, as well as their exchange with the extracellular medium. The aim of this book is to look into the basic physical phenomena occurring in cells. These physical transport processes facilitate chemical reactions in the cell and that in turn leads to the biological functions necessary for the cell to satisfy its role in the mother organism. Ultimately, the goals of every cell are to stay alive and to fulfil its function as a part of a larger organ or organism. This book is an inventory of physical transport processes occurring in cells while the second volume will be a closer look at how complex biological and physiological cell phenomena result from these very basic physical processes.

From a chemists' point of view, a cell is a complex chemical reaction chamber where various molecules are synthesized or degraded. The main question is how these, sometimes very complicated chains of reactions are controlled. Finally, from a physics standpoint, some of the fundamental questions are about the physical movement of all these molecules between organelles within the cell, their exchange with the extracellular medium, as well as electrical phenomena resulting from such transport. The aim of this book is to look into the basic physical phenomena occurring in cells. These physical transport processes facilitate chemical reactions in the cell and various electrical effects, and that in turn leads to biological functions necessary for the cell to satisfy its role in the mother organism. Ultimately, the goals of every cell are to stay alive and to fulfill its function as a part of a larger organ or organism. The first volume of this book is an inventory of physical transport processes occurring in cells while this second volume provides a closer look at how complex biological and physiological cell phenomena result from these very basic physical processes.

The Second World War affected the lives and shaped the experience of millions of individuals in Germany - soldiers at the front, women, children and the elderly sheltering in cellars, slave labourers toiling in factories, and concentration-camp prisoners and POWs clearing rubble in the Reich's devastated cities. Taking a 'history from below' approach, the volume examines how the minds and behaviour of individuals were moulded by the Party as the Reich took the road to Total War. The ever-increasing numbers of German workers conscripted into the Wehrmacht were replaced with forced foreign workers and slave labourers and concentration camp prisoners. The interaction in everyday life between German civilian society and these coerced groups is explored, as is that society's relationship to the Holocaust. From early 1943, the war on the home front was increasingly dominated by attack from the air. The role of the Party, administration, police, and courts in providing for the vast numbers of those rendered homeless, in bolstering civilian morale with 'miracle revenge weapons' propaganda, and in maintaining order in a society in disintegration is reviewed in detail. For society in uniform, the war in the east was one of ideology and annihilation, with intensified indoctrination of the troops after Stalingrad. The social profile of this army is analysed through study of a typical infantry division. The volume concludes with an account of the various forms of resistance to Hitler's regime, in society and the military, culminating in the failed attempt on his life in July 1944.

CSR AND SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS introduces many perspectives on corporate social responsibility and sustainable business, and describes how the different perspectives are connected. The reasoning is linked to real-world examples and cases. CSR is subject to rapid developments within both politics and business, nationally and globally. The relationships between business and society, and between economics and politics, affect both the content of sustainability practices and the expressions and directions they take in research, which several of the book's chapters address. In this revised edition, we have added a focus on how geopolitical conflicts affect companies' opportunities to pursue sustainability issues, as well as a description of the new regulations from the EU. The book provides both an overview of the most important concepts and theories, and an in-depth presentation of historical perspectives and connections to business ethics. Theory is interspersed with examples from a wide range of companies and organizations. The book is divided into three parts: The first part provides a broad introduction to CSR and sustainability and introduces concepts and definitions in the field. It contains a new chapter on social sustainability. The second part in various ways highlights responsibility and sustainability work in the practices of companies and business operations, covering everything from the consumer and value chain perspectives to sustainability reporting. The third and final part of the book lifts the gaze to a more strategic level where the role of capital and investments in companies' sustainability work is highlighted, along with how general sustainability strategies can be communicated. The book brings together some of the most influential experts in the field and is used at many universities and management training courses in Sweden.

""Armin Landeck, an American realist whose graphic career spanned more than half of the twentieth century, was trained as an architect but devoted his life to etching, creating his first print in 1927.A brief period of study under Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17 in New York City introduced Landeck to copper engraving, establishing his subsequent fascination with the burin and all it can do. For the rest of the l940s Landeck often used both drypoint and engraving on the same plate, but after 1950 he produced only copper engravings with the exception of three wood engravings in 1958.This revised edition of a book first published in 1977 has been completely rewritten and expanded to include prints not known when the first edition was publishedplus the prints made by the artist from 1977 till his death in 1984. The first edition contained 127 prints and states; 164 prints and states are now pictured and described. An important addition to this book outlines Landeck s participation in many national print exhibitions such as those at the Library of Congress and the Society of American Etchers. Reflecting the growing appreciation of Landeck s work, the list of public institutions that have Landeck prints in their permanent collections has grown from the first edition s thirty-one to this edition s ninety-six. A new section entitled "Notes on the Prints" gives in-depth information on many Landeck prints. An extensive bibliography is another feature of this second edition."
