The Divining Rod: A History Of Water Witching is a book written by Arthur J. Ellis that explores the history and practice of water witching, also known as dowsing. The book delves into the origins of this ancient practice, tracing its roots back to ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians and Greeks. It also examines the various techniques and tools used by water witches throughout history, including the use of divining rods and pendulums.Ellis provides an in-depth analysis of the science behind water witching, exploring the theories and hypotheses that attempt to explain how it works. He also discusses the controversies surrounding the practice, including skepticism from the scientific community and accusations of fraud.Throughout the book, Ellis includes fascinating anecdotes and stories of water witching in action, from finding underground water sources to locating lost objects. He also examines the role of water witching in modern times, including its use in agriculture and natural resource management.Overall, The Divining Rod: A History Of Water Witching is a comprehensive and engaging exploration of this fascinating practice, providing readers with a deeper understanding of its history, techniques, and controversies. This is a new release of the original 1938 edition. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. This resource volume, written especially for teachers of introductory chemistry courses, is in a ready-to-use format that will enable instructors to integrate materials chemistry into their curriculum. The book collects a critical mass of text, demonstrations, and laboratory experiments. The first ten chapters present a general introduction to solids; numerous easy-to-do teacher demonstrations are integrated into the material. The second part of the volume consists of fifteen laboratory experiments for students. Examples from cutting-edge research, as well as everyday life, spark student interest while illustrating the basic ideas that are important to an understanding of chemistry.

This Technical Report presents the outcome of a Working Group that was established to determine broadly applicable sound exposure guidelines for fishes and sea turtles. After consideration of the diversity of fish and sea turtles, guidelines were developed for broad groups of animals, defined by the way they detect sound. Different sound sources were considered in terms of their acoustic characteristics and appropriate metrics defined for measurement of the received levels. The resultant sound exposure guidelines are presented in a set of tables. In some cases numerical guidelines are provided, expressed in appropriate metrics. When there were insufficient data to support numerical values, the relative likelihood of effects occurring was evaluated, although the actual likelihood of effects depends on the received level. These sound exposure guidelines, which are based on the best scientific information at the time of writing, should be treated as interim. The expectation is that with more research the guidelines can be refined and more cells in the tables completed. Recommendations are put forward defining the research requirements of highest priority for extending these interim exposure guidelines.

Light-emitting solids are essential for many high technology materials and products, including compact disc (CD) players. Students make use of the periodic table to propose color-specific emitting solids based on knowledge of periodic properties, bonding, electronic transitions, solid structures, and the properties of light.

This is a solid, well-detailed account of Arthur J. Goldberg, who played a leading role in American political life from the Second World War to the end of the 1960s. A prominent and defining figure in the American labour movement, Goldberg became Secretary of Labor under the Kennedy Administration before being named a justice to the Supreme Court. He was also ambassador to the United Nations under Johnson's presidency.
The Extraordinary Archive of Arthur J. Munby
In the mid-1860s Arthur J Munby began to collect the first mass-produced photographic images of working-class women in England, recording fascinating details about the women, the places he purchased the photographs and the raging debates on this new commercial practice of photography, in accompanying diaries. Many of these images – not to mention Munby’s fascinating diaries - have never been published before. This book examines this previously un-investigated archive, offering a fresh and arresting perspective on the interrelationships between photographic representations of working-class women, the creation of new identities of class and gender and the evolution of popular conceptions of photography itself.
