County Capitols

County Capitols

Arthur L. Rusch; Jason Haug

South Dakota State Historical Society
2014
nidottu
The history of the towns of South Dakota revolves around two features that every community hoped to acquire: a railroad and the county seat. If either of these important attributes could be brought to a town, the likelihood for growth and survival of that settlement increased. Dreaming of great things for their communities, the pioneers who settled the prairie spaces of southern Dakota Territory went to extreme measures to ensure that their town would become a commercial and industrial centre. Land speculators who owned many of the town sites also hoped that populations would grow and increase the demand for lots so that they could sell them at a profit. Using county records, reports, and archival material, Arthur L. Rusch shows how the resulting “courthouse fights” between rival communities would turn into outright battles including bidding wars, midnight forays to steal county records, and even the destruction of courthouse buildings to ensure the acquisition of a courthouse site.

Arthur L Bowley: A Pioneer In Modern Statistics And Economics

Arthur L Bowley: A Pioneer In Modern Statistics And Economics

Arthur Lyon Bowley, the founding father of modern statistics, was an important and colorful figure and a leader in cementing the foundations of statistical methodology, including survey methodology, and of the applications of statistics to economical and social issues during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In many respects, he was ahead of his time. The giants in this field around that time were largely concentrated in the British Isles and Scandinavian countries; among these contributors, Arthur Bowley was one of the most active in revolutionizing statistical methodology and its economic applications. However, Bowley has been vastly undervalued by subsequent commentators — while hundreds of articles and books have been written on Karl Pearson, those on Arthur Bowley amount to a dozen or less. This book seeks to remedy this and fill in an important omission in the monographical literature on the history of statistics. In particular, the recent resurgence of interest in poverty research has led to a renewed interest in Bowley's legacy.

In the ten years since the first edition of this book appeared, many new findings have been generated in a variety of clinical and research contexts. The new edition of this successful text summarizes this research and adds normative data on new populations including children and the elderly. It therefore offers an updated coverage of the clinical tests developed at the Benton Laboratory of Neuropsychology.
Exploring the History of Neuropsychology

Exploring the History of Neuropsychology

Arthur Benton has long been recognized as a distinguished researher,an influential educator, and a gifted writer. Early in his career, he was struck by the extreme divergence in the acceptance and usage of concepts and terms such as 'agnosia', 'amnesic aphasia', and 'apraxia' by leading figures in the then young field of neuropsychology/behavioral neurology. This prompted him to explore the literature of 19th century neurology and led to an abiding interest in the historical background of current developments, which often proved to be the outgrowth of earlier formulations. In this collection of his historical papers, he traces the evolution of thought and practice in diverse areas of neuropsychology and behavioral neurology. He captures the setting in which observations and discoveries were made and shows how the limited knowledge of basic neuroscience that prevailed at the time influenced their interpretation. He emphasizes the interplay of clinical and experimental approaches in advancing understanding of brain-behavior relationships and clarifies the connections between past and present knowledge. Some of the essays are systematic accounts of developments in the broad discipline of neuropsychology while others deal with individual clinicians and scientists whose contributions are now components of current knowledge. Among the topics covered are the frontal lobes, developmental dyslexia, disorders of spatial thought in patients with brain disease and the role of cerebrovascular disease in the history of aphasiology.
Constructing Social Theories

Constructing Social Theories

Arthur L. Stinchcombe

University of Chicago Press
1987
nidottu
Constructing Social Theories presents to the reader a range of strategies for constructing theories, and in a clear, rigorous, and imaginative manner, illustrates how they can be applied. Arthur L. Stinchcombe argues that theories should not be invented in the abstract—or applied a priori to a problem—but should be dictated by the nature of the data to be explained. This work was awarded the Sorokin prize by the American Sociological Association as the book that made an outstanding contribution to the progress of sociology in 1970.
The Logic of Social Research

The Logic of Social Research

sidottu
Arthur L. Stinchcombe has earned a reputation as a leading practitioner of methodology in sociology and related disciplines. Throughout his distinguished career he has championed the idea that to be an effective sociologist, one must use many methods. This incisive work introduces students to the logic of those methods. The Logic of Social Research orients students to a set of logical problems that all methods must address to study social causation. Almost all sociological theory asserts that some social conditions produce other social conditions, but the theoretical links between causes and effects are not easily supported by observation. Observations cannot directly show causation, but they can reject or support causal theories with different degrees of credibility. As a result, sociologists have created four main types of methods that Stinchcombe terms quantitative, historical, ethnographic, and experimental to support their theories. Each method has value, and each has its uses for different research purposes. Accessible and astute, The Logic of Social Research offers an image of what sociology is, what it's all about, and what the craft of the sociologist consists of.

When Formality Works

When Formality Works

Arthur L. Stinchcombe

University of Chicago Press
2001
sidottu
In this exploration of the concept of formality, or governing by abstraction, Arthur Stinchcombe breathes new life into an idea that scholars have all but ignored in recent years. We have come to assume that governing our social activities by advance planning--by creating abstract descriptions of what ought to happen and adjusting these descriptions as situations change--is not as efficient and responsive as dealing directly with the real substance of the situation at hand. Stinchcombe argues the opposite. When a plan is designed to correct itself and keep up with the reality it is meant to govern, it can be remarkably successful. He points out a wide range of examples where this is the case, including architectural blueprints, immigration law, the construction of common law by appeals courts, Fannie Mae's secondary mortgage market, and scientific paradigms and programs. Arguing that formality has been misconceived as consisting mainly of its defects, Stinchcombe shows how formality, at its best, can serve us much better than ritual obedience to poorly laid plans or a romantic appeal to "real life."
