Poetry, Quotes and other Thoughts from travels, experiences, and interactions with people and places around the world.
Molecular Biology is the story of the molecules of life, their relationships, and how these interactions are controlled. It is an expanding field in life sciences, and its applications are wide and growing. We can now harness the power of molecular biology to treat diseases, solve crimes, map human history, and produce genetically modified organisms and crops, and these applications have sparked a multitude of fascinating legal and ethical debates. In this Very Short Introduction, Aysha Divan and Janice Royds examine the history, present, and future of Molecular Biology. Starting with the building blocks established by Darwin, Wallace and Mendel, and the discovery of the structure of DNA in 1953, they consider the wide range of applications for Molecular Biology today, including the development of new drugs, and forensic science. They also look forward to two key areas of evolving research such as personalised medicine and synthetic biology. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.
Written primarily for mid-to-upper level undergraduates, this primer will introduce students to topics at the forefront of the subject that are being applied to probe biological problems, or to address the most pressing issues facing society. These topics will include those that form the cornerstone of contemporary research, helping students to make the transition to active researcher. This primer provides an overview of the complex processes underpinning cancer development and progression along with a summary of cancer treatment strategies, emphasising the development of targeted molecular therapies and the opportunities they provide. It takes a contemporary and integrated approach, encompassing debates on genetics, epigenetics, and cancer addictions, and highlighting the remaining challenges and future research directions to advance the field.
Written primarily for 16-to-19-year-old students, this primer provides a highly accessible overview of key milestones in the history of cancer research, our current understanding of the disease, and future directions in its diagnosis and treatment. The Cancer Challenge introduces students to key concepts in the study of cancer, explaining how cancers develop and covering a variety of approaches to their diagnosis and treatment. Discussions of new approaches to preventing cancers, screening programmes, and innovations in diagnosis that draw on AI provide insights into current developments in cancer research and how they benefit patients. Key features bl Oxford Biology Primers are the only resource to introduce prospective and current students of undergraduate-level bioscience to a range of topics from this dynamic experimental science, enticing readers to study further bl Its titles directly support two key transitions in the student journey: from school to undergraduate-level study, and from undergraduate to independent researcher bl Its modular format offers a high degree of flexibility, with teachers being able to draw on specific volumes that augment the post-16 curriculum, university lecturers being able to draw on specific volumes at different stages of the undergraduate curriculum, and with materials from the series being available for access in both print and digital formats bl The Cancer Challenge is available for students and institutions to purchase in a variety of formats: the e-book and Science Trove offer a mobile experience and convenient access along with functionality tools, navigation features, and links that offer extra learning support. Aysha A. Hidayatullah offers the first comprehensive examination of contemporary feminist Qur'anic interpretation, exploring its dynamic challenges to Islamic tradition and contemporary Muslim views of the Qur'an. She analyzes major feminist readings of the Qur'an beginning in the late twentieth century, synthesizing their common concepts and methods and revealing their vital part in the development of the nascent field of Qur'anic tafsir (exegesis). Hidayatullah contributes her own critical assessment of feminist ''impasses'' in the Qur'anic text and the field's appeals to the principles of equality and justice. She expands these observations into a radical critique of feminist approaches to the Qur'an, arguing that the feminist exegetical endeavor has reached a point of irresolvable contradiction by making claims about the Qur'an that are not fully supported by the text. Hidayatullah outlines major challenges to the authority of feminist interpretations of the Qur'an and interrogates the feminist premises on which they have relied, questioning the viability of current strands of feminist Qur'anic interpretation and proposing a major revision of its exegetical positions. An innovative work of Muslim feminist theology, this volume offers an essential contribution to conversations about feminist tafsir and asking bold questions at the ''edge'' of Qur'anic interpretation.
Aysha Hidayatullah presents the first comprehensive analysis of contemporary feminist interpretations of the Quran. Synthesizing prominent feminist readings of the Quran in the United States since the late twentieth century, she provides an essential introduction to this nascent field of Qur'anic scholarship and engages in a deep investigationas well as a radical critiqueof its methods and approaches. With a particular focus on feminist impasses in the Quranic text, she argues that many feminist interpretations rely on claims about feminist justice that are not fully supported by the text, and she proposes a major revision to their exegetical foundations. A provocative work of Muslim feminist theology, Feminist Edges of the Quran is a vital intervention in urgent conversations about women and the Quran.
In the sixteenth century, Erasmus of Rotterdam led a humanist campaign to deter European princes from vainglorious warfare by giving them liberal educations. His prescriptions for the study of classical authors and scripture transformed the upbringing of Tudor and Stuart royal children. Rather than emphasising the sword, the educations of Henry VIII, James VI and I, and their successors prioritised the pen. In a period of succession crises, female sovereignty, and minority rulers, liberal education played a hitherto unappreciated role in reshaping the political and religious thought and culture of early modern Britain. This book explores how a humanist curriculum gave princes the rhetorical skills, biblical knowledge, and political impetus to assert the royal supremacy over their subjects' souls. Liberal education was meant to prevent over-mighty monarchy but in practice it taught kings and queens how to extend their authority over church and state.
The book tells the story of a girl's struggle for freedom and happiness growing up within a strict family in a Moslem country (Turkey). We vividly experience her tremendous frustration as she fights to have a normal childhood while at the same time trying to satisfy the demands of her neurotic and work-obsessed parents. From the first page, the reader begins to identify with the little Aysha and feels the pain in her young heart. As she grows, we accompany her through various traumas (abuse, neglect and harassment, a first relationship and separation), until her escape (aged 27) from her social and psychological confines. Despite often plumbing the depths of despair, she never loses her sense of hope and determination that she will one day find freedom and happiness. Offering insight into how our experiences as children shape who we are today, it is in a sense a self-help book. The emotions that Aysha expresses are universal and will strike a chord with many people, particularly women.
