Sanna Kannisto’s métier is nature photography. Like her role models, she considers herself both a scientist and an artist. And, in fact, her analytical gaze is in no way inferior to her creativity and passion. She creates moments of unusual beauty that also shed light on what has been previously concealed. Kannisto has her own method for taking pictures of birds, photographing the animals in front of a brilliantly lit, white background. Removed from their usual surroundings, every detail appears in matchless clarity, allowing for precise study. At the same time, this results in a unique visual aesthetic: the feathers glow brightly, the beating wings take on a majestic quality, and the deep black eyes of the birds seem to gaze hauntingly at the camera. The patience required to produce these pictures has paid off , since it is hard to imagine more beautiful photographs of birds.

Joseph Anton Kochs Tagebuch einer Ferienreise an den Bodensee von 1791 ist eine der schoensten und interessantesten fruhen Arbeiten des neben C. D. Friedrich bedeutendsten deutschen Landschaftsmalers des fruhen 19. Jahrhunderts. In Wort und Bild dokumentiert Koch hier die Eindrucke und Erlebnisse einer achttagigen Fussreise, die durch seinen Freundeskreis an der Hohen Carlsschule in Stuttgart inspiriert wurde und die in der Tradition der burgerlichen Bildungsreise steht. Die Arbeit ist die erste wissenschaftliche Untersuchung des Reisetagebuchs in seiner Gesamtheit. Sie spurt der Intention, Konzeption und Genese von Kochs Werk nach und zeigt den kulturhistorischen und geistesgeschichtlichen Kontext auf, in dem Reise und Reisebeschreibung zu verankern sind.

In diesem Band stellen wir die Endergebnisse der sich auf sechs Jahre er- streckenden Langsschnittstudie "Optionen der LebensgestaItung nichteheli- cher Lebensgemeinschaften" vor. Die Ergebnisse dieser Panelstudie sind in engem Zusammenhang mit der parallel durchgefuhrten, ebenfalls langs- schnittlieh angelegten Verbundstudie "Optionen der Lebensgestaltung jun- ger Ehen und Kinderwunseh" zu sehen. Beide Forschungsvorhaben bilden somit zwei wesentliche Stadien der "Lebensverlaufe in der Moderne" ab. Die Entwicklungsverlaufe junger Ehepaare werden daher demnachst in einem weiteren Band vorgestellt. UEber Zwischenergebnisse der Langsschnittstudie, die hier teilweise mitverwertet werden, haben wir bereits berichtet (vgl. VaskovicsIRupp 1995). Diese mit viel Arbeitseinsatz durchgefuhrte Untersuchung ware ohne Zu- sammenarbeit von mehreren wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeitern und Unterstut- zung nicht moeglich gewesen. Bedanken moechte ich mich an erster Stelle bei meinen Mitautorinnen Frau Marina Rupp, die diese Untersuchung uber die gesamte Laufzeit mit hohem Einsatz und Engagement betreut hat und Frau Barbara Hofmann, die in den letzten Jahren diese Untersuchung sehr enga- giert mitgestaltet hat. Bedanken moechte ich mich weiterhin bei der Arbeits- gemeinschaft Sozialforschung und Sozialplanung eV., die eine beispiellose Ausschoepfungsrate bei den Wiederholungsbefragungen erreicht hat und nicht zuletzt beim Bayerischen Staatsministerium fur Arbeit, Sozialordnung, Familie, Frauen und Gesundheit fur die finanzielle Foerderung dieser Langs- schnittstudie uber vier Datenerhebungswellen.

Regularization methods aimed at finding stable approximate solutions are a necessary tool to tackle inverse and ill-posed problems. Inverse problems arise in a large variety of applications ranging from medical imaging and non-destructive testing via finance to systems biology. Many of these problems belong to the class of parameter identification problems in partial differential equations (PDEs) and thus are computationally demanding and mathematically challenging. Hence there is a substantial need for stable and efficient solvers for this kind of problems as well as for a rigorous convergence analysis of these methods. This monograph consists of five parts. Part I motivates the importance of developing and analyzing regularization methods in Banach spaces by presenting four applications which intrinsically demand for a Banach space setting and giving a brief glimpse of sparsity constraints. Part II summarizes all mathematical tools that are necessary to carry out an analysis in Banach spaces. Part III represents the current state-of-the-art concerning Tikhonov regularization in Banach spaces. Part IV about iterative regularization methods is concerned with linear operator equations and the iterative solution of nonlinear operator equations by gradient type methods and the iteratively regularized Gauß-Newton method. Part V finally outlines the method of approximate inverse which is based on the efficient evaluation of the measured data with reconstruction kernels.
